1 Advanced Therapeutic Solutions 600 W 22nd Street, Suite 250 Oak T F Information for Counselors Traveling for Adventure Camp Training Thank you for your interest in pursuing this unique training experience in selective mutism. Below, you will find information about the training experience and expectations. This handout has been updated with feedback from previous counselors who have traveled for Adventure Camp. I hope that you find this information helpful. Please let me know if you still have questions. - Dr. Carmen Lynas Application Deadline Applications are accepted on a rolling basis starting in January and are reviewed until April 30 th. Interviews and offers are made on a rolling basis. Applicants are encouraged to submit their applications as soon as possible to ensure their chance at obtaining a training slot. If you are applying for internship and are waiting for your MATCH Day results, you are still encouraged to apply. If your matched internship conflicts with the Adventure Camp dates, you can notify me and I will remove your application. To apply, submit the following to CounselorTraining@AdvancedTherapeuticSolutions.org: Cover letter stating your interest in selective mutism and why you are pursuing SM training. CV or resume 2 letters of recommendation If recommenders are ing their recommendations, please have them enter Recommendation for [Your Name] in the subject line and to CounselorTraining@advancedtherapeuticsolutions.org. Interview Requirement Interviews for out-of-town candidates can be completed via Skype, FaceTime, Google Hangout, or similar applications. Interviews start in February and run through May, or until all training slots are filled. Training Cost: None! This training is free for two reasons: 1.) To provide access to training, especially for individuals working in school districts or state-funded organizations with limited budgets, and 2.) To provide access to care, especially for families who do not have the means to pay for private, specialty services. Counselors receive two full days of didactics training, a range of hours of live supervision on the implementation of the Adventure Camp protocol, and five full days of 1 More hours may be requested. 2 Rates may have changed; call hotel directly to verify.
2 2 of 7 providing direct, supervised service to a child with selective mutism in the group, schoolsimulated program called Adventure Camp. Attendance at the two-day training in June is required. You will need to learn the protocol, as well as how the preparatory sessions (lead-in sessions) are carried out in the clinic. Additionally, it is essential that we meet as a team to allow for team-building and rapport before working an intensive week together at Adventure Camp. This means you are to come in town for the weekend training in June, and then come back in town the last week of July through to the last day of camp in August. My mission is to help children with selective mutism receive appropriate and effective treatment, and you are part of that mission. By providing this experiential, intensive training to you, you can, in turn, help others. There are not enough providers with experience and training in selective mutism; the field needs those who feel the passion to help this population. So far, ATS has covered the operating costs associated with the camp counselor training. I am not sure how long ATS can carry that load, but I do hope that we can continue covering the operating costs so that there is less financial burden on those who dedicate their time for training. So bear in mind, the training is free now, but that might not always be the case! Required Training Dates for Adventure Camp 2017 Two-Day Training - Friday, June 23 rd & Saturday, June 24 th : Friday will cover SM didactics, including theory, behavioral concepts, behavioral methods used to treat SM, and the camp protocol. Saturday will cover lead-in session protocol, logistics, and role-playing the successive hierarchical exposure steps involved to practice the skills learned the previous day and prepare you for the actual event. During the role-play practices, I will assess for protocol adherence and guide you accordingly. I have found through the years that team-building is absolutely essential for a smooth-running camp. To foster team-building, we have added an improv exercise that will bring us together as we close Day Two, and will definitely leave you inspired for camp. Lead-In Sessions - July 24 th - July 27 th, at ATS Out-of-town campers come in town around the second to last weekend in July. The specialists at ATS work with them intensively on Friday and Saturday to prepare them for lead-in sessions. On Monday, campers start their lead-in sessions with their assigned camp counselor. Counselors are welcome to arrive earlier if they wish.
3 3 of 7 You are required to be available Monday - Thursday to work with a camper while receiving live supervision. During the live supervision, we will be assessing for intervention fidelity and providing live corrective feedback where needed. Concurrently, your assigned camper will be meeting their hierarchical exposure tasks. If your assigned camper passes a priori goals for camp early (Tuesday), then you may have a day where you are not doing any lead-in sessions (usually Wednesday). You are welcomed to observe or take part in other sessions. Conversely, if your camper needs more time with the exposure tasks, then you may find that you are doing several back to back lead-in sessions with them. You will meet with the camper every day until the final day of lead-ins, which is the last Thursday of July, or until they pass lead-ins, whichever comes first. Below is an example of a camper s lead-in session schedule: 7/28/2014 Monday 9:00-9:45 with Parents, slide Therapist in 9:45-10:30 with Therapist only 10:30-11:15 with Therapist, try to slide Counselor 1 in (30min buffer possible) (11:15 12:15 Additional lead-in possible if indicated) 7/29/2014 Tuesday 10:00-11:00 with Counselor 1 11:00-12:00 with Counselor 1 (try to slide Counselor 2 in if Camper is ready) 12:00 1:00 with Counselor 1, slide in Counselor 2 if haven t already (If not ready for Counselor 2, continue next day. If ready, can pass and come back for pair session on Thursday.) IF DID NOT PASS ON TUESDAY 7/30/2014 Wednesday 7/31/2014 Thursday PAIR LEAD-IN 9:00-10:00 with Counselor 1, slide Counselor 2 in 10:00-11:00 with Counselor 2 only (11:00-12:00 May attempt a pair lead-in here) (10:00-11:00 additional lead-in with Counselor 1 or 2 if needed) (11:00-12:00 additional lead-in with Counselor 1 or 2 if needed) 1:00pm - 2:00pm Pair lead in with Counselor 1 or 2* (2:00-3:00pm additional pair lead-in if needed) *Counselor 1 or 2 can do pair lead-in; usually the best match is with the most recent Counselor (i.e., Counselor 2). On some occasions, Camper may have a stronger rapport with Counselor 1. In some cases, Camper develops stronger rapport with a neighboring Counselor who is working with another child. Camper will be able to do pair session with any of them. Adventure Camp Dates: July 31 - Aug 4, 2017, at the School
4 4 of 7 Camp will be held at Hinsdale South High School, 7401 Clarendon Hills Road, Darien, IL Counselors hours are from 8am-4pm. Campers are there 9am-3pm. 8AM 9AM: Team Meeting to discuss & review each camper, answer questions, and prepare their goals for the day. Video clips from the previous day may be shown to reinforce skills training where needed. 9AM 3PM: Camp is in session. Counselors work 1:1 with their camper on the exposure tasks that are scheduled for the day. We start the morning with a group meeting (circle time for younger ages, assembly time for older ages). During the group meeting, we do the usual school activities such as welcome song, weather, date, assign jobs, say the pledge, etc. The day continues with activities such as snack, recess, group project, visiting community member, lunch, and field trip. The day ends with the Prize Store where campers order their prize to reward them for all their brave talking. 3PM 4PM: We meet as a team to discuss each camper, how they did with their goals, and what would be an appropriate goal for the next day. Each counselor fills out the Progress Note form with the information discussed. Discussions about each camper are continued at our 8AM meeting the following day. Location Lead-in Sessions are held at ATS, located at 600 W 22nd Street, Suite 250, Oak Brook, IL. Camp is held at Hinsdale South High School, 7401 Clarendon Hills Road, Darien, IL Accommodations We have tried in the past to block rooms in hotels or try to coordinate some kind of reduced-cost accommodations, but to no avail. We are simply not large enough. At times, local counselors have offered hosting traveling counselors, which has worked out well (and sometimes means that renting a car is not needed). While I can t guarantee that there will be local counselors offering accommodations, I will gladly send an to the group. See the attached list of hotels to get a sense of hotel costs.
