Day 0: Tuesday, May 28 - Depart US for historic Rome The optional group flight departs Albuquerque on American Airlines this morning. Day 1: Wednesday, May 29 - Arrive in the Eternal City of Rome! Yes, all roads do lead to Rome! Upon arrival your guide will meet the group in the Arrivals Hall. Due to the early arrival of the group flight, we'll set off for a tour of the Popes summer palace, the Palace of Gandolfo. Enjoy a "Welcome to Italy" lunch and a tour of the Barbarini gardens before making our way to our hotel in the afternoon. Sleep in Rome (L) Day 2: Thursday, May 30 - Discover Rome After breakfast with your guide and hosts Brent Stevens and Anthony Barrese, we ll set out to explore Rome by foot. Our leisurely stroll through the ancient city center will take us past some of the city's most famous sights: the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, and the stunning flower market, Campo de'fiori. Having worked up an appetite, we'll dine at a delicious trattoria next to the market. The afternoon is yours to relax, or take in some additional sights before meeting your hosts this evening for your first included opera, Fiery Angels, produced by the Rome State Opera Company. 5 Day 3: Friday, May 31 - A morning in ancient Rome and and evening tour of the Vatican Explore the ancient forum, the via Sacra, Coliseum, the Palatine Hill, Circus Maximus and the Tomb of Pope Julius II which was designed and created by Michelangelo and his assistants. Originally commissioned in 1505, this massive work was not completed until Enjoy lunch together and then a free afternoon and evening in Rome. Then meet for an evening tour of a special Vatican Museum. Sleep in Rome (B, L) Day 4: Saturday, June 1 - Tivoli Gardens and Madame Butterfly Meet your hosts and tour guide in the hotel lobby right after breakfast. Climb aboard your private coach and be whisked away, south to Naples. Along the way we will stop to admire the amazing gardens at Tivoli. Enjoy lunch before continuing south to ancient Napoli. Check into your four star hotel and relax and freshen up. Tonight's performance is Madame Butterfly performed by the San Carlo Opera Company at the famous San Carlo Opera House. Sleep in Naples (B, L) Day 5: Sunday, June 2 - Discovering Naples The ancient Greek city of Naples is a fascinating place, full of art and packed with priceless treasures seldom seen by ordinary tourists. To fully understand the city's Greco-Roman roots we ll begin with a tour of the famed archeology museum. Inside you ll find rooms and corridors packed with marble statues and Roman mosaics collected from Pompeii, Herculaneum and the other five cities that were buried when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 70 AD. Next we are set off to explore the Castel dell'ovo. This impressive 15 th century building stands on the site of an ancient Greek colony that later became a Roman fortress. 6 Pizza! Pizza! Pizzaiuolo, the art of Neopolitan pizza-making, was added to UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December The UNESCO designation is meant to safeguard and raise awareness about forms of cultural heritage. Pizzaiulo "fosters social gatherings and intergenerational exchange" and the pizza-makers are a living link for the communities concerned," said a UNESCO rep. When news of the UNESCO recognition broke in Naples, pizza-makers handed out free slices on the street to celebrate. "After 250 years of waiting, pizza is humanity's heritage, its intangible heritage," Neopolitan pizza maker Enzo Coccia told the BBC. Now that's a delicious reason to celebrate! Day 6: Monday, June 3 - South to Sorrento via Herculaneum On our way to Sorrento we will stop to admire the ancient preserved seaside resort town of Herculaneum. Much like Pompeii the town was buried in 70 AD. However, Herculaneum is a much quieter version of crowded Pompeii. You ll be amazed by how well-preserved the ancient town is with frescos and graffiti still on the walls and many old villas are intact. After an in-depth visit, our journey continues to the seaside town of Sorrento. Sorrento is perfectly situated for those explorers who wish to visit the isle of Capri, the Amalfi Coast and its many charming villages. Sleep in Sorrento (B, D) Day 7: Tuesday, June 4 - The Island of Capri Join your guide and hosts for a full day excursion as we hop a ferry and head to the island of Capri. There is no place like Capri for stunning panoramic views of the sea and gorgeous blooming landscapes. Lined with villas, numerous walking paths meander through terraced gardens, sweet with the scent of lemon trees and include spectacular views from well-placed terraces. We ll enjoy lunch and plenty of time to wander before we return to Sorrento. Sleep in Sorrento (B, L) Day 8: Wednesday, June 5 - The Amalfi Coast and Ravello Classical Music Festival This morning you'll have time for that extra cappuccino! Take time this morning to explore Sorrento before departing this afternoon for Ravello. Our first stop is the town of Amalfi to admire the Cathedral of Saint Andrew. We'll also take a garden tour, visit a renowned ceramic factory and enjoy a multi-course dinner before an evening chamber music performance at the Ravello Chamber Music Festival. Sleep in Sorrento (B, D) Day 9: Thursday, June 6 - A Free Day to Explore the Amalfi Coast Today is your day - you can relax in Sorrento, sign up for an optional cooking class, shop, hike or take a ferry down to the white-washed charming town of Positano. Your guide can offer you other suggestions too. Or, you may wish to dedicate the day to the Italian sentiment of la dolce far niente which means the "sweetness of doing nothing." 7 Day 10: Friday, June 7 - North to Rome via Monte Cassino After breakfast we depart Sorrento for Rome. En-route we will stop to visit the Abbey of Monte Cassino. Founded in 529 by Saint Benedict, he chose this mountain to build a monastery for his new order. It is still a thriving place. In 1944 the monastery was at center stage during the Battle of Monte Cassino. The allies presumed the abbey was being used by the Germans as an artillery observation point. Wave after wave of Polish, American, Canadian, New Zealand, and British soldiers tried in vain to take the towering hill. Finally, the decision was made to level the abbey with air power. After the war the monastery was painstakingly restored to its original splendor. And the artifacts which had been stored safely at the Vatican during the war were returned. We'll arrive in Rome in time for an independent dinner. Sleep in Rome (B) Day 11: Saturday, June 8 - Exploration of Ancient Rome Today you have a choice. Stroll down the Via Sacra and tour the coliseum or the Vatican with an expert local guide. Rest and relax this afternoon before meeting your hosts for another wonderful opera, Cinderella, performed by the Rome Opera Company. Sleep in Rome (B, L) Day 12: Sunday, June 9 - Return home with a lifetime of memories! Your tour concludes after breakfast. A complimentary airport transfer is included for those departing on the group flight. The group flight departs Rome at noon today. If you are considering booking your own flight we recommend that you request a late morning / early afternoon departure. On boats, planes, ships and ferries, guests will need to be able to maneuver unassisted up and down gangways, stairs and in between decks. Smokers may smoke outside and downwind of the group. Concerts, Festivals and Events: If (for any reason) the organizers of a scheduled concert, festival or event cancel or postpone a planned activity with little or no notice, Earthbound Expeditions will do its utmost to secure a similar event or secure another concert(s). Strikes, unscheduled delays, lack of funds and acts of God are beyond the control of Earthbound Expeditions. Cancellation of an event, festival or concert is not cause for refund. Hosted Journeys: If a host or special guest is unable to attend as planned, Earthbound Expeditions will do its utmost to find another host who has similar interests, talents expertise. 9 MEET YOUR GUIDE & CLASSICAL HOSTS Maestro Anthony Barrese has earned accolades as both a composer and a conductor. He is the recipient of the 2007 Georg Solti Foundation U.S. award for young conductors. His original works have won numerous awards, and he is regularly engaged by opera companies in North America and Italy. As Artistic Director of Opera Southwest he has performed Rossini s Otello with the American staged premiere of the finale lieto, and in 2014 he lead the new World Premiere of Amleto, not heard anywhere since The Opera Southwest's season includes Rossini's rarely performed William Tell, Bellini's Norma and a World Premiere production based on Rodolfo Anaya's bestselling novel, Bless Me, Ultima. Natalia holds degrees as Interpreter and Translator in English and German and has been a tour manager for fifteen years.
