1 FALKIRK ARCHIVES Local authority records Falkirk Town Council Finding Aid (2) The finding aid for the records of Falkirk Town Council has been divided into 11 parts. This part contains a list of the records of the Town Clerk. The Town Council was abolished in 1974 following the Local Government (Scotland) etc Act, 1973, and its powers transferred to Falkirk District Council.

2 Falkirk Town Clerk The Town Clerk kept the minutes, correspondence and other administrative records of the local authorities and acted as their legal adviser. Duties included maintaining correspondence on behalf of the Town Council, acting as the Town Council s solicitor in the passage of legislation affecting the Burgh and related agreements, representing the Town Council in legal disputes and running the Council s general administration. The Town Clerk also maintained the electoral rolls and a range of statutory registers. The post ceased to exist with the abolition of Falkirk Town Council in 1975 and the functions were mainly transferred to the Chief Executive or to the Director of Law & Administration of Falkirk District Council. Many of these records were previously held by Central Regional Archives and the former references are show as well as the current reference numbers. Other records were transferred from Falkirk District Council and Falkirk Council, mainly from the basement of Falkirk Municipal Buildings. The original order of the records was not apparent when the records were transferred and so these records have been arranged by function and by subject matter.
