1 Local Authority Religious Representatives An Audit March 2016 Overview All local authorities in Scotl have been required by law to appoint three unelected religious representative to their education 1 committee since All local authorities are required to appoint one representative from the Church of Scotl, (with the exception of Orkney Isls, Shetl Isls Western Isles) one representative from the Roman Catholic Church. Local authorities are then required to appoint an additional third representative based on the comparative strength within their area of all the churches denominational bodies, except Orkney Isls, Shetl Isls Western Isles who appoint two. A petition was brought forward by Edinburgh Secular Society on December 2013 to ask The Scottish Parliament s Public Petition to ask the Scottish Government to repeal the legislation requiring this. This petition fell on 6 May 2014 after John Finnie 2 MSP announced he would be seeking to bring forward a Members Bill which would have the same effect. John Finnie announced in 3 November 2014 that he would not be seeking to bring forward the Bill following a public consultation.
