Midweek we always need operators especially Standard and S gauge. Weekends usually have more operators, so please reserve your slot. Bring out unusual trains, your favorites, etc. Steve Pierce will have his KARZ train with approx 40 cars featuring the vehicles of the KARZ movies. I m sure Bob Wall will bring out his Circus Train. I will bring my Pre-War goodies Zephyr included and for the first time, my 156 passenger set. Hopefully all 3 camera cars will be available for use. The camera car has worked well in O-Gauge and will hopefully do equally well for Standard and S gauge. HOW-TO CLINIC NO CLINIC THIS MONTH As you know the monthly How-To Clinic has evolved into one of our member s favorite features at the monthly Meets. It seems like only yesterday that Jim Weatherford and Bart Grey volunteered to host the Clinics, but believe it or not the first Clinic was held in September of Wow! We just can t thank them and the many Guest Clinic Hosts enough for all the knowledge and experience they have shared with us over the past four years. So who can begrudge Jim for wanting to take a little Summer break. Therefore there will be no Clinic this month, but the Clinics will resume in September. Jim is always looking for Clinic subjects to cover. If you have one in mind that you would like to see just let Jim know. August, AGTTA PDF Extended Version Main-Line

Ted has a house in Carlsbad and a summer home in Michigan and shares his time between each. Over the past several years Jim has done a lot of repairs for Ted. Well, turns out that Ted was at one of the large train shows where Centerline Products had a booth. He spoke with their reps and discovered that they donate their track cleaning cars to clubs that run trains for the August, AGTTA PDF Extended Version Main-Line

4 Bill Hungerford In case you hadn t heard Big Bill celebrated his 95 th birthday this year. Congratulations Mr. Bill. Bob Poley Update Bob Schultz sent along this update on past member Bob Poley. Bob is recovering at Kindred Rehab Hospital (1740 Curie Drive, El Paso, TX 79902) after what may have been a small stroke. I have mailed him the current Classic Toy Trains magazine to enjoy. He is alert; however he is somewhat confused about where he is. He has many more friends here and really enjoys talking to people he knows. His current phone number is (915) The intent of a conversation is not so important, just an encouraging word will help him greatly. Hoping this finds you all well. Your Friend in Trains, Bob Shultz Thank You Bill Hess I just wanted to let you know that each month Bill Hess gets the word out about our monthly Meets by making a detailed post to the Model Railroads Of Southern California Forum. Thank You Bill, it is much appreciated. BOARD MEETING Your Board held another meeting on Tuesday, July 23, at the SDMRRM Meeting Room. Various items were discussed and agreed upon. Here are the highlights of the meeting. Calendar of Events Our calendar was firmed up for the remainder of the year. Here s what s coming up. August 8 th Meet White Elephant Raffle this is always a fun raffle and a real chance to get rid of all those unwanted train goodies and to replace them with new treasurers. September 12 th Meet This will be our first fall meet and with the weather changing it should be very well attended. SDMRRM Fall Run September 23 through October 11 are the dates for our 5-Rail Modular Fall Run session at the SD Model RR Museum. For this fall s event the coordinators will be Al Keil and Jim Weatherford. October 10 th Meet Ed Karper Memorial Free Bee Table & Board Nominations Without question this is one of our most well attended events of the year. Its continuing popularity is a tribute to Old Smokey and what he brought to our Club. He continues to be missed. November 14 th Meet 2014 Board Elections In preparation for the upcoming year we will once again have our very important Board elections. As always, we encourage you to step forward and take an active roll in leading your Club in December 3 rd Christmas Dinner Based on the huge success of last year s dinner the Board decided to again have our annual dinner at Tom Hams Lighthouse Restaurant. After a huge remodel and upgrade Tom Hams is once again open for business to rave reviews. It s just a wonderful space in which to hold our Holiday dinner. If you couldn t make last year s event you just shouldn t let that happen again this year. Watch for all the details in upcoming MainLines. December 7 & 8 Del Mar Great Train Expo The Board decided to again display the Club s 5- Rail Modular Layout at the Expo. This has always been an excellent opportunity to make visitors aware of our Club and to also promote our December Open House Meet that will take place the following weekend. Of course your help is needed to make this outing a success. That includes set-up, running trains and take-down. Please contact Steve Pierce to sign-up. December 14 th December Open House Meet This year s Holiday Meet is definitely a go. The date is Saturday, the 14 th, at the Church Hall. The BBQ Pit has signed up to once again provide lunch. So it should be another great event. Bylaw Changes To keep the Club s Bylaws up-to-date some minor changes are needed. The Board has agreed on the changes and as required the first reading of them will be at the September Meet followed by a second reading at the October Meet. THOUGHTS FROM JERRY WARD Longtime Member Jerry Ward, who has been a frequent contributor to the MainLine (and I certainly apprecaite that Jerry) has submitted these thoughts for your consideration. Consider this! The United States was in the midst of WW2 and Lionel was ALLEGEDLY out of the toy train business. I say "allegedly" because it was in 1943 that I received my very first Lionel train set. Lionel was not supposed to be selling trains, yet I received a new set as a gift. Despite WW2, in 1943 Lionel was still very much in the toy train business. Otherwise, how can you explain a catalog for public consumption only weeks after the Japanese surrender on September 2, 1945? After all, the U.S. military was making plans for the war to continue well into The question then begs, "How was Lionel so prepared to go back into toy train production when the war suddenly ended September 1945? A.C. Gilbert and Marx were not ready! In today's political climate wouldn't someone be clamoring, "Inside information"? Jerry Ward August, AGTTA PDF Extended Version Main-Line

5 RADY CHILDREN S HOSPITAL UPDATE Alan Hamel & Richard Thompson have completed the changeover of the Rady Children s Hospital Acute Center Pavilion Model Train Layout to the "Summer" display. In addition to changing some of the buildings they have incorporated changes in the "character" flatcars including a "Cinderella" theme with a replication of the fourhorse Pumpkin Coach. There are also additional theme flatcars featuring the Disney/Pixar animated "CARS", and "PLANES" films as well as several "Looney Tunes Show" characters such as Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Elmer Fudd, Sylvester & Tweety Bird. The Club owes a big, big Thank You! to both Alan & Richard for representing our Club in such a grand manor. The job they are doing in maintaining, updating and modifying the Rady display on a regular basis is simply above and beyond what anyone should expect. They are making improvements to the reliability of the layout while at the same time updating it with the goal of sustaining its currency and not letting it become static. Here is just what I think is a typical story about why this layout is so important and so valued by the folks at Rady and why we as a Club should be proud of Alan & Richard s efforts. Alan shared the story about how about he was installing and testing some upgraded circuit boards and accessing the layout to correct a diesel/flatcars derailment when a family of four, with a young girl in a wheelchair with an intravenous attached, approached the layout. Alan said he pointed out the various buttons that would activate both the trains & accessories and pushed them to reassure them that they would work. Alan continued, WELL... (I apologize for the tears) but her ability to run a train and blow the whistle distracted her from her present condition, if only temporarily. It truly was a moment to enjoy. The mother of the young girl mentioned how often she would visit the hospital and observe the children "playing with the trains... and having so much fun!" Alan said he was initially somewhat skeptical of how much attention would be paid to the layout after its installation last November. However, the decision to keep it in the main lobby has certainly allowed its reputation to spread throughout the entire Rady Hospital complex. On every visit to maintain and service the layout, both he and Richard have been complemented on how much the children (and parents) enjoy the experience. On numerous occasions the parents would recall when they (or their brothers) had a train set they would run under the Christmas tree during the holidays. The membership of both the AGTTA and San Diego 3-Railers should be proud of the enjoyment that the Rady Acute Center Model Train Display has brought, and will continue to bring, to both young and old. Way to go guys. August, AGTTA PDF Extended Version Main-Line

7 UP ACQUIRES BIG BOY NO Plans to Restore One of the Largest Steam Locomotives Ever Built Omaha, Neb., July 23, 2013 Union Pacific Railroad today announced it had reached an agreement with the Southern California Chapter - Railway & Locomotive Historical Society in Pomona, CA., to transfer ownership of one of the world's largest steam locomotives, Big Boy No. 4014, back to Union Pacific. Union Pacific plans to relocate No to Cheyenne, WY where Union Pacific's Heritage Fleet Operations team will work to restore it to operating condition including a fuel conversion to No. 5 oil. The restoration is anticipated to take three to five years will join UP s two other famous steam locomotives Challenger 3985 and Northern in excursion service when her restoration is completed. She will become the world s largest operational steam locomotive. Details regarding the restoration efforts will be made public at a later date. Union Pacific donated No to the historical society December 7, The locomotive arrived January 8, 1962, at its current display location at the Rail Giants Train Museum in Pomona. No other railroad has retained its historical equipment or honored its American roots like Union Pacific. "Our steam locomotive program is a source of great pride to Union Pacific employees past and present," said Ed Dickens, senior manager - Union Pacific Heritage Operations. "We are very excited about the opportunity to bring history to life by restoring No " Twenty-five Big Boys were built exclusively for Union Pacific Railroad, the first of which was delivered in The locomotives were 132 feet long and weighed 1.2 million pounds. Because of their great length, the frames of the Big Boys were "hinged," or articulated, to allow them to negotiate curves. They had a wheel arrangement, which meant they had four wheels on the leading set of "pilot" wheels which guided the engine, eight drivers, another set of eight drivers, and four wheels following which supported the rear of the locomotive. The massive engines normally operated between Ogden, Utah, and Cheyenne, Wyo. Eight of the Big Boys were donated for public display in various cities around the country. They can be found in Pomona, CA, St. Louis, MO, Dallas, TX, Omaha, Neb., Denver, CO, Scranton, PA, Green Bay, Wis., and Cheyenne, Wyo. Big Boy No was delivered to Union Pacific in December The locomotive was retired in December 1961, having traveled 1,031,205 miles in its 20 years in service. Editor s Note: I don t know about you but yours truly can t wait for the opportunity to see this massive engine in operation. That is going to be a day to remember, for sure. 9 AUGUST 2013 TECH TIP AUTOMATIC ROUTE SELECTION Another in the Series from the Classic Toy Trains Handbook for Toy Trains Traditional Layout Wiring The automatic non-derailing feature, which Lionel pioneered and incorporated into all of its turnouts (and adopted by other manufacturers), worked on the principle of the insulated running rail. A short section of rail on both routes was insulated so that, if the turnout was thrown against an approaching train, the wheels and axles of that train would bridge the rails, complete the electrical circuit, and, in the last second, throw the turnout in the right direction, so the train would not derail. The non-derailing feature can be used in a system in which the train itself automatically selects different routes. This is accomplished by wiring two or more turnouts together as shown in the following sample layouts. This automated system can be disabled by inserting a doublepole, single throw (DPST) switch in the wiring between. It is not necessary to unhook the normal turnout controllers when wiring in the automated system. Sample Layouts The following four simple layouts use automatic train control and illustrate the principle involved, which you can apply to your own layout. 11 ALL ABOARD FOR 2015 Balboa Park s Model Railroad Museum plans Railway Garden for Centennial Celebration Editor s Note: The following article by James Chute appeared in the July 7 th edition of the San Diego Union-Tribute Newspaper. Some might call it obsessiveness. Anthony Ridenhour, the director of the San Diego Model Railroad Museum, prefers to call it passion, the driving force behind the museum s more than 300 volunteers. Especially in the Balboa Park museum s HO and N scale layouts, everything from the tiny adobe tiles on a model of the Santa Fe Depot (built from the station s actual blueprints) to the napkin holders inside a model of a restaurant is meticulously rendered. We are extremely fortunate to have these volunteers, Ridenhour said. We lovingly refer to some of the model builders as the rivet counters. They make sure every single rivet is in place on these miniature trains and that the details on the buildings are just as they appeared back in the day. The decidedly volunteer nature of the Model Railroad Museum is one of the defining characteristics of an institution that calls itself the largest and only accredited model railroad museum in North America and one of the top model railroad museums in the world (probably second only to Miniatur Wunderland Hamburg). It s as much a clubhouse as a museum. On almost any given evening, you can find members of the San Diego Model Railroad Club, the La Mesa Model Railroad Club, the San Diego Society of N Scale or the San Diego 3-Railers Club maintaining their exhibits and talking about model railroading. With the upcoming 2015 Centennial Celebration, the museum is informally involving members of yet another group of volunteers, the San Diego Garden Railway Society, in the creation of a Centennial Railway Garden behind the Casa de Balboa. For years, we ve wanted to do a garden railroad for the Model Railroad Museum somewhere in the park, Ridenhour said. With the centennial, we thought, wouldn t it be great if we could do a miniature park, a miniature representation of the park as it was in 1915, within the park? BALBOA PARK RE-IMAGINED While the San Diego 3-Railers Club s lively Toy Train Gallery is full of fancy (just the idea of conventional trains running on three rails is a fantasy in itself), most of the exhibits in the museum are based on actual or historic railway lines, executed in 1:87 (HO), 1:160 (N) or 1:48 (O) scale. On occasion, club members will get together and stage an operating session, where they ll pick a mid-century timetable for that particular line from the museum s library, assign members the tasks that replicate a real railroad (yardmaster, dispatcher, engineer, among others), and run the model line on the real timetable. And unlike a conventional museum, many of those same volunteers created the exhibits they are now running and maintaining. A lot of museums, they hire exhibit designers, Ridenhour said. They have people on staff who actually design the exhibits and put them together and create budgets to make sure those exhibits are executed. The majority of our exhibits are funded by volunteers and built and maintained by volunteers meaning they put their time and their own money into it. For the Centennial Railway Garden, the museum is taking a page from the 3-Railers. Because of the limitations of the outdoor space available (16 by 32 feet), the location of three palm trees, and the whimsical inclinations of designer Robert Treat (a former animation director at Disney), the layout of Balboa Park has been compressed and re-imagined to allow most of the iconic 1915 sites to be part of the exhibit, from the Organ Pavilion to the Botanical Garden. August, AGTTA PDF Extended Version Main-Line

12 And unlike most of the museum s layouts, the garden exhibit will be professionally built (meaning the professionals will be paid) and will allow a number of technically sophisticated features, including the development of a mobile phone application to enable visitors to interact with the exhibit and solar panels that would keep the exhibit off the grid. The museum is in the process of raising the $286,000 necessary for the construction, staffing and securing of the exhibit, which would open in January 2015 and operate for at least a year. We re proposing it as a temporary exhibition, Ridenhour said. But it s possible it could become a legacy exhibit and be permanently installed. DETAIL-ORIENTED An ongoing outdoor exhibit would help alleviate one of the museum s legacy challenges: visibility. Even some of the larger museums in Balboa Park are concerned about single-minded visitors going to a specific institution and walking right past the others. But few institutions in the park are as hidden as the Model Railroad Museum. We don t have any kind of storefront or outward face to the park, Ridenhour said. So it s a challenge. I often wonder what it would be like to have that storefront. How many people would we draw just from the sheer curiosity factor? In 2013, a year of transition after founding director John Rotsart retired in 2012, the museum is on target to draw 140,000 people, which would be a record. For a number of years we were in a good, sustainable phase, said Ridenhour, who was Rotsart s deputy. Now we re in a revamp, a modernization. We re done everything from updating our logos to putting in brand-new exhibits, to more strategic planning everything from business structure all the way up to programming and outreach. The potential Railway Garden would face the parking lot behind the Casa del Prado (the proposed new location for valet parking), and the fencing, modeled on the fencing of the Cabrillo Bridge, would allow people to look into the exhibit from the outside. They won t be able to miss the garden s primary feature, the G (1:32) scale replicas of the streetcars John D. Spreckels San Diego Electric Railway Co. developed for the 1915 exposition. But they may have to look closer to see some of the other features, which could include the pipes in the facade of the organ Spreckels also had built for the exposition. Visitors entering the exhibit from the museum will be able to activate the organ and hear music that would have played in We re known for our attention to detail, Ridenhour said. Some would call it obsessiveness. August, AGTTA PDF Extended Version Main-Line

14 TOY TRAINS GO HOLLYWOOD CONTEST Contributed by Dave Otth We have a winner, and a new winner at that! Being first among several who answered last month s quiz correctly was Jim Osborne who correctly identified the movie as North by Northwest and the two leading actors as Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint. Congratulations Jim, your 8 x 11 print will be in the mail soon. This month we ve got another movie that features Lionel Standard Gauge trains. And again since this very popular movie should be familiar to almost any Hollywood movie buff we ask that you provide the answers to these three questions: What is the name of the movie? What year was it released? and What are the names of the two famous stars in this drama? If you think you know the answers them to me ASAP and I ll let you know if you answered them correctly and if you are the first to do so. And don t forget that the winner will receive an 8 x 11 print of the above photo. And as always, thanks for playing. Again our sincere thanks to Club Member Dave Otth for making this fun toy train contest possible. August, AGTTA PDF Extended Version Main-Line
