4 A Short Introduction Our objective: Let your dreams come true! Your dreams are our goal, your expectations our guidance. With them, we start to build a trip which allows you to live it just as you imagined, but we add to the image you have about Colombia, faces of people, colorful houses, aromas, dances and flavors. Colombia leaves everything to imagination, still rarely visited; travelers do not know everything it offers. Thus there is a lot to discover and all these discoveries will be wrapped up by a lively mestizo culture and an exuberant, beautiful nature. Colombia our adoptive patria René Suter arrived from Switzerland in 1995 and founded Chaska Tours in Here, various employees from Germany and Colombia have come together with the clear idea to offer a different tourism, a tourism which gives something back to nature, the land and its people. With responsible actions, we achieve to conserve territories and customs of its people. It allows entertainment, interaction with landscapes and inhabitants, and diving into the daily life of a country just opening its eyes to the world. For many reasons, Colombia has become our chosen home. Here we learned to appreciate everything: to hear other voices, to dance other rhythms and to live differently. The natural generosity of its people, their customs and manners to live are an apprenticeship for us that we would like to share with you. Our tours: Exciting, authentic, triggering a desire for more! Since we like to offer tours for every type of traveler, we have a wide range of programs starting from backpacker to adventurous tours up to luxury tourism. We also offer sport trips as well as expeditions in harmony with nature. We have been living in this country for a long time and know it well, that s why we offer destinations which - for other agencies - are unknown or impossible. Together with friends and family we have travelled to places off the beaten track. That is our true advantage and that s why we always fulfill what we promise. Chaska Tours has its main office in San Agustin with further branches in Cartagena and Bogota. Our guides: Professionals with passion Our guides speak various languages and all of them have been living in the country for a while. They know the people and their customs, their culture and the context in which Colombia moves by their own experience. They know very well with which expectations a foreigner travels and have a lot of experience dealing with international customers. All our guides do their job with love for Colombia and welcome its visitors with sympathy. Our accommodations: To feel good in a local and clean environment We invite you to get to know our destinations and where we offer a wonderful environment surrounded by local people, which guarantees not only to relax peacefully but also to appreciate the local cultural practices of each region. Our accommodations follow a certain type of standard which consists of three principles: Clean, Comfortable and with a good service. Our prices: Fair for each participant We offer trips full of experiences at a very competitive price, as we minimize administration and intermediary costs with direct contracting of the providers. In addition, we simplify communication by maintaining a direct contact with the customer. 4

5 Sustainability Our participation and interaction with the territories: Colombia is a country that lived for many years under very particular economic and social conditions, mostly appealed by its natural resources. Because of these, the battle of protection is increasing and the territories (people, landscape, culture, land) pass through tremendous contradiction which moves between improving their quality of life with a monetary income and the destruction of the ecosystem caused by multinational companies. Therefore, the tourism we offer has taken strength among the most remote indigenous communities. We concentrate on finding small places without a lot of diffusion but which fulfill our desire for protection of the environment, so that we are able to realize our tours, awaiting an awake and conscious tourist. For us it is important to pay fair salaries, so that the people can live of the tourism industry. We are committed to respect the culture, language and learning new forms of conservation. Chaska Tours is a co-founder of SerCOnatural, a fusion of various companies which are supporting ecological tourism and strengthening the care of the environment with a tourism that minimizes the damage and maximizes the search of a dignified life for everybody. SerCOnatural Colombia is one of the most diverse countries on the planet. Full of all kinds of plants, mammals and culture and very rich in natural resources. That s why Colombia has one of the biggest diversity of birds and amphibians worldwide. But the awareness of this diversity and the need to protect it is still largely missing. SerCOnatural wants some habits to be changed in order to make a change in consciousness. Up to now, a little bit of sensitization has been done in order to reduce environmental pollution. These projects are supported and Colombians are called to recognize the cultural and natural treasures of their country. Colombia is now working on developing sustainable tourism and making it competitive nationally as well as internationally. For more information please visit their website: TourCert We are members of the TourCert community. We have met the ecological and social standards of TourCert. On the basis of a self-assessment, we have implemented a CSR-Action plan, which we report to TourCert on a yearly basis. 5

Most people here live of fishing and also tourism. The INETEB School that we will visit is an institution that is run by Franciscan nuns and is specialized in ichthyology. INETEB School projects are manifold and interesting. Due to the geographic location of La Boquilla (between sea and lagoon), the residents of La Boquilla are specialized in traditional fishing and farming of fish. INETEB built artificial breeding basins in the natural lagoon. These basins partially replace class rooms because that is where new techniques, old customs and different tasks (measuring, weighing, vaccinating and feeding the fish) are taught. The laboratory of INETEB offers an academic environment where research projects are developed and where the acquired skills are applied. Also, ornamental fish like goldfish are bred here. Thanks to the project Save the children that awarded grants to INETEB School in 2008, the projects are well organized and are starting to show their first results. The goal is to educate the children to become fishermen, expand the research on fish breeding and teach alternative forms of creating income (like the breeding of ornamental fish). You will be welcomed with a cold coconut beverage. The schools dancing group will perform a dance show of regional dances. Afterwards, the school system and current projects will be presented to you. 84 Destinations Colombia is one of the most diverse countries in the world. On the next pages, you are going to find the most important and best known destinations, though we can organize your journey to wherever you want to go in Colombia! 84

85 San Andrés - The Seven Colored Sea San Andres is located about 700 km away from the Colombian coast but only 200 km from the Nicaraguan and is famous for its amazing, white sandy beaches. A while ago its reputation was a little but rougher, because of pirates who came to the island. The island inhabitants of today are very friendly and cheerful people who love to sing and dance (Reggae, Soca and Calypso) and are very proud of their full of nature home. San Andrés consist of a mountain-chain which ranges from north to south and on its highest point lies 55 meters above sea level. The island is mainly formed by coconut forests. It`s possible to do several water sports in its turquoise water and the island also offers a good night-live, shopping possibilities of thousands of tax- free products (the island got the status as free-trade zone). But also the quietness invites you to take a walk on the beautiful white sandy beaches. Providencia & Santa Catalina: A Natural Paradise These two small islands are about 72 km away from San Andrés, there are daily flights to get to the islands from San Andrés. They occupy a territory of 22 km² and are connected by a 100 meter long artificial canal. It was built in the 17 th century by pirates, to protect the island from enemies. In Santa Catalina the pirates Henry Morgan und Louis Aury built forts and installed canons, which still remain today. Providencia, also known as Old Providence, combines on its 17km² territory so many places of extraordinary beauty, that it s one of the top destination for eco-tourism. The neighbor island Santa Catalina completes a visit perfectly. The silent is only broken by singing birds and the sound of the sea, crushing against rocks. The most famous rock is called Cabeza de Morgan (Head of Captain Morgan). Barranquilla Carnaval Colombiano Barranquilla, also known as La Arenosa (the sandy city) and Curramba la Bella (the beautiful, celebrating city), was found in With a population of almost inhabitants it is the fourth biggest city in Colombia. It is the most important sea- and river- harbor in the country. Barranquilla`s historic center is under preservation of sites of historic interest. Because of a lot of immigrants that came to Barranquilla this city got a lot of different traditions and a cosmopolitan and cheerful character. The architecture of the buildings in the district El Prado follows a Caribbean, Mediterranean style. The theatre Amira de la Rosa and the metropolitan stadium belong to one of the most important cultural locations of Barranquilla. Barranquilla offers a great choice of hotels, restaurants and night-live that play Caribbean music every night. The Carnival of Barranquilla last four days and is celebrated right before the fasting period starts. It is a Colombian folk festival but for the whole world. National Park Los Katíos and Darien - The Continents Natural Barrier The National Park has a territory of 720 m² and its name comes from the Katio-Indigenous, but there are not living in the park anymore. Los Katios built together with the National Park Darien (Panama) the so-called Tapón del Darien (cork of Darien). The beauty of this park shows itself in a diversity of landscape, flora and fauna. This region is like a living laboratory. A biodiversity like this, between Central- and South-America, is hard to find at another place. There are over 450 species of birds and about 500 kinds of vertebrates. Nowhere else it is that easy to watch a big mammal like a tapir or a jaguar in the wild. The birds are more trusting than elsewhere and they let visitors come really close. The Ciénagas of Tumarandó are home to caimans and see-cows. For decades now there are efforts to tear down this last Landschranke and to finish of the last part of Pan-American. This vision would be an ecologic disaster, for this reason the park was declared to national heritage of humanity in

86 National Natural Park El Tuparro: Wonders of Orinoco The Tuparro is a vast prairie, surrounded by exuberant forests and beautiful beaches with crystal-clear water. The park is home to 320 species of birds. The park is situated in the Vichada department, on the far eastern border to Venezuela. The Orinoco River flows through the Maipures rapids, a place that Alexander Von Humbolt once called the 8 th wonder of the world. Its stunning beauty and exotic wilderness are a marvel to hike, kayak, fish, climb and photograph. Long ago, the park was home to indigenous tribes of hunters and gatherers. Archeological remains are testimony to this fact. Today the park is home the Sikuani tribe, which is known for their impressive artisanship. The park s fauna is also impressive. Primates, otter, jaguars, pumas and wild boars are some of the wildlife you can see in the park. A rare type of fish, named Osteoglossum Ferreyra, is a protected species. Efforts have been made to curtail certain human activities, such as rafting, mountain biking, fishing or bird watching, in order not to endanger the fragile ecosystem. Nariño - Land of Volcanos Nariño is the first province of Colombia that the traveler encounters next to Ecuador. The region is one of the most diverse departments of the country. Here you can find the Pacific, profound jungle, impressive volcanos and amazing lagoons. Laguna La Cocha At the center of the picturesque lagoon of Cocha there is a little island called Carota. It consists of volcanic stone and was declared a natural reserve. From the lakeside you can see the extraordinary wooden architecture that can be compared to an alpine landscape of Switzerland. Green Lagoons The Laguna Verde is the crater of the volcano Azufral. It is 3780 meters high. The emerald green waters form a beautiful contrast to the white sandy beach.
