6 MAIN MENU GENERAL INFORMATION CHILE AND PATAGONIA IRODUCTION TO HUILO HUILO AWARDS AND RECOGNITIONS COACT INFORMATION

7 CHILE AND PATAGONIA Chile is a long and narrow country that lies between the Andes Mountains and the Pacific Ocean in the southwestern part of South America. Its latitude coordinates range from S in the southern highlands to S in continental Chile and 90 S in the Antarctic territory. Patagonia is one of the most beautiful parts of Chile. Since its discovery almost 500 years ago, it continues to be described as exotic, remote, and wild. Because Patagonia s climate is defined by four distinct seasons, we can appre ci at e i t s eve r- changing landscapes, colors, and lighting all year round. 1/1

8 MAIN MENU GENERAL INFORMATION IRODUCTION TO HUILO HUILO OUR HISTORY & 3-PILLAR PHILOSOPHY WILDLIFE PRESERVATION LOCAL COMMUNITY IEGRATION SUSTAINABLE TOURISM HUILO HUILO FOUNDATION

9 OUR HISTORY AND 3-PILLAR PHILOSOPHY Huilo Huilo is located in the heart of the Patagonian Forest, in Region of Los Rios (the Rivers). The reserve contains 100,000 hectares of amazingly biodiverse temperate rainforest. It is home to endangered species, majestic mountains, volcanoes, glacial lakes, and countless streams, as well as the highest number of fern species in continental Chile. Our goal at Huilo Huilo is to delight our visitors with the magic of Patagonia. We strive to protect and preserve the temperate rainforest while integrating local communities so as to improve both present and future generations quality of life. The Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve practices a new concept of sustainable development, which is based on three essential pillars: Conservation: conservation of biodiversity through research and flagship projects, such as the Huemul Conservation Center Integration of the Community: active incorporation of local communities, generating new jobs and offering training in various disciplines, including programs with local schools. This helps those who live here, in addition our visitors, discover the area s worth. Special Interest Tourism: the new addition to the area s economy, which will allow projection towards the future. The Huilo Huilo Foundation enforces the implementation and development of the first two pillars. READ MORE ABOUT HUILO HUILO FOUNDATION 1/1

10 OUR HISTORY AND 3-PILLAR PHILOSOPHY HUILO HUILO FOUNDATION OurMission Our mission is to protect, preserve and restore the temperate rainforest, while integrating local communities in order to create a better quality of life for present and future generations. With this objective in mind, we have developed conservation, social and educational programs, designed to change old paradigms and to incentivize small businesses and the sustainable development of the area. Our Vision Our vision is that through the recovery of natural and cultural values, the local community will develop a sustainable economy which in turn will provide a better quality of life for its members, in which they live in harmony with the environment and base their development on the appreciation and conservation of the temperate rainforest, water systems and other ecosystems. 1/4

11 OUR HISTORY AND 3-PILLAR PHILOSOPHY HUILO HUILO FOUNDATION Strategic Objectives Protect the temperate rainforest, the water systems, and other ecosystems. Restore damaged ecosystems through ecological landscaping and botanical restoration projects with conservation criteria. Part of this task is to protect amphibians, birds, insects, and mammals through on-site conservation projects, monitoring projects, reproduction projects, and reintegration projects for vulnerable and endangered species. Develop and support scientific research projects that allow a thorough understanding of biological processes so as to conserve native species and ecosystems, as well as the study of the geological and glaciological origins of the reserve. Revive local cultural values through projects and literary competitions; research and publications of stories, legends, and poetry; and the development of music and dance. Develop a local economy based on conservation and sustainability. In this way, we seek to open new areas of activity and generate entrepreneurial initiatives through vocational training and academic and technical education. Contribute to the development of environmental awareness in the community through publications and the sharing of nature s worth. 2/4

12 IRODUCTION TO HUILO HUILO THE HUILO HUILO FUNDATION FLORA AND FAUNA CONSERVATION Programs 1. Protection and reintegration of the huemul del sur, the south Andean deer 2. Study of the habitat range of pumas, local wild cats 3. Reintroduction of the guanaco, a local llama-type mammal Scientific Areas Conservation project for the Sapito de Darwin, Darwin s frog. Identification of the entomological fauna (insects) of Huilo Huilo. Study of the effects of climate change on the Mocho Choshuenco glacial biomass. Collection for the Native Flora Herbarium Project: the collection and preservation of seeds. Study of the phytoplankton community of Pirehueico Lake. Land use and zoning project. The Conservation of the Native Forest supports the existence of native birds like the chucao, the kingfisher, the black woodpecker, and our small native deer, the pudú. At higher elevations, you ll find pumas, huiñas (another species of wild cat), and high mountain birds, such as the majestic condor. The forest s undergrowth is full of orchids, alstroemeria (Peruvian lilies), multicolored vines, ferns, fungi, lichens and mosses. This allows for the development of species such as the stag beetle, the golden butterfly, and Darwin s frog. 3/4

13 IRODUCTION TO HUILO HUILO HUILO HUILO FOUNDATION LOCAL COMMUNITY IEGRATION Originally, logging and the lumber industry gave Neltume and Puerto Fuy economic boosts and opportunities. However, due to the private nature reserve project which began ten years ago, things are now changing. Located in a 60,000-hectare section of the Valdivian forest, this reserve contains natural hot springs, unexplored lakes, and direct access to the Mocho-Choshuenco Volcano. The reserve helps to give people a new perspective of the forest, encouraging them to move out of the forestry and logging business to a way of life based more on conservation and sustainability. The Huilo Huilo project has since led to a new era based on the beauty of its landscapes, the value of its flora and fauna and especially its magnificent native forest. This has caused the people of Neltume, characterized by their welcoming nature and entrepreneurial capacity, to fall in love with the forest again and to gradually develop a process of conversion Huilo Huilo subsequently acquired a 40,000-hectare logging area on the northern shore of Lake Pirehueico in order to annex the reserve's territory through a management plan that is now under study. Thanks to the hard work of the Huilo Huilo Foundation, we have accomplished a high degree of local community participation, generating new on-site jobs and offering training in different disciplines as well as programs in local schools. We believe that this will improve the community members quality of life, allowing conversion for the local people while preserving local culture. Today, 90% of the people working at Huilo Huilo are from local communities. Map of services in Neltume 4/4

58 PATAGONIAN RAINFOREST CROSSING 6D RATES AND CONDITIONS Climate The Patagonian Temperate Rainforest is located in Chilean territory, between S and S latitudes, east of the Andes Mountain range. It is known for its abundant, year-round precipitation and for its temperate summers (with temperatures reaching 30 C/86 F). This rainy climate is due to the humidity carried by the anticyclonic winds from the South Pacific, which then condenses due to the cold coastal Humboldt currents. The humidity falls as rain when it enters the continent, and then dissipates when it reaches the Andes upon colliding with the dry winds that come from the Argentinian Patagonian region. Physical Demands Our 6-day Patagonian Rainforest Crossing program requires some physical ability, but the program is designed so that our clients have distinct alternatives for activities and excursions. Activities or excursions can be selected by each guest to match their physical ability. The activities mentioned in itinerary are suggested only: we have a wide range of activities, also included in the program rate to choose from, in the case you would like to change from the ones suggested to others more or less active. If you have a special condition or disability that might impede you from joining us on the program or from using the hotel facilities, please consult with our staff before making your reservation in order to avoid any inconvenience. 7/8

Huilo Huilo has a small rental shop for all of these items in their Ski Center, but please ask for more details and available sizes before your trip if you are planning on using these services. The last eruption in 1864 created the crater of the Mocho Volcano. You ll arrive at the source of Rio Truful (Truful river) at sunset, an area surrounded by large cliffs shaped by ancient glaciers. After 30 minutes of observation, we ll make our way to the Rio Blanco camp (which has restrooms available) to enjoy lunch accompanied by a delicious selection of Chilean red wines. Once we ve had lunch and a siesta in the riverside hammocks -or simply enjoyed some good after dinner conversation - we ll begin our descent by vehicle towards the last activity of the day: the Fungi Route. A magnifying glass and species guide will be provided during our activity and our expert guide will teach us how to identify the different species of fungi that thrive in the Patagonian Temperate Rainforest. It is known for its abundant, year-round precipitation and for its temperate summers (with temperatures reaching 30 C/86 F). Physical Demands The programs offered at the Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve demand different levels of physical exertion. The program Wildlife Safari requires a good level of physical fitness. The trekking portions are relatively short and of low difficulty, and a large portion of the program is done in 4x4 Jeeps, which ensures that the overall level of effort required is low. If you have a special condition or disability that might impede you from joining us on the program or from using the hotel facilities, please consult with our staff before making your reservation in order to avoid any inconvenience. What You Shouldnʼt Forget It is very important to come prepared for both winter and summer on all trips. 82 4D HUILO HUILO LIVING HERITAGE DETAILED ITINERARY Day 1: Arrival at Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve: the magic begins! You'll arrive at Neltume, a small town 3 km from the Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve hotels, in the area of Panguipulli, head to the Reserve and have dinner before settling in to your lodgings in Reino Fungi Lodge (does not include IN/OUT transfer) Day 2: Local Foundation Workshop and Native Tree Nursery. Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve, Chile After breakfast our journey begins. The history of the Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve has been influenced by various factors, such as the native Mapuche communities that settled here originally, the volcanic activity that forced them to move away, and the newer communities that have settled here since, all of which have helped shape the locals current customs and culture. Their values have changed from that of a logging culture to one that today protects the environment through various conservation projects and tourist destinations. We will start our day in the Foundation's Workshop, where local microentrepreneurs will teach us how to fabricate different products that they then sell through the Huilo Huilo Foundation, centering on the works of magical beings, which represent the various species and elements that can be found in the reserve s Patagonian Temperate Rainforest. Artisanal woodwork is also a highlight in these workshops, and this is an ideal time to learn about how local wood is utilized in this region. After a delicious lunch in the Foundation s café, we ll have an hour-long tour in which we ll see how local honey is produced or the alternative production method of the local cheeses, which will be accompanied by a small tasting. Afterwards we will head towards our last activity for the day, in the Llallalca sector, where we ll see the Native Tree Nursery where local trees, flowers and herbs are preserved. Here we will learn how the locals work with these plants, and later enjoy an once (afternoon tea) at La Tetería before returning to the hotel. 2/7

83 Day 3: Local Mapuche Culture and Customs Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve and Lake, Chile 4D HUILO HUILO LIVING HERITAGE DETAILED ITINERARY After breakfast we ll take a couple of short morning walks to our morning destinations. If there is heavy rain, we ll arrive via vehicle. First we ll visit the Museo de los Volcanes" (Volcano Museum), a private collection of historical mining and woodworking artifacts, an assortment of old weapons, and a great variety of Mapuche jewelry which includes old copper utensils used by the Incas. Afterwards weʼll head towards el Sendero de los Espíritus" (the Spirit Trail), which combines wooden walkways with the forest floor and is just a short fifteen-minute walk from the hotels. Legends say that this area used to be an ancient Mapuche burial ground, and locals tell stories of meeting ancient spirits that lurk in the forest grounds. On this trail, weʼll see enormous wooden totem poles and anthropomorphic and zoomorphic representations of the different Mapuche deities. Our guide will regale you with relevant histori cal facts alongside ancient Mapuche my ths and legends. We will then retur n to the hotel for l unch. The volcanic activity in this region also affected the Mapuche culture. Archeological excavations have discovered indications of ancient Mapuche settlements buried beneath more recent volcanic activity. Each volcanic activity also generated a series of geological faults, in particular a huge number of volcanic caves. In the afternoon, we will head to one of these, the Cave of the Machis, in the Llallalca sector. We will hear the legend of this cave where it is said that witches) from distinct Mapuche communities would meet to exchange knowledge and experiences. To finish our trip, we will drive to Lake Neltume, a sacred place for the Mapuche, and we will visit one of the Huilo Huilo Foundation workshops to learn more about this rich culture. Afterwards, we will return to the hotel to share our photos from the trip alongside dinner, before enjoying our final night in the Reino Fungi Lodge. Day 4: Departure Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve After a good night s sleep (which will hopefully be uninterrupted by Mapuche spirits!), we'll enjoy breakfast before saying goodbye to Huilo Huilo. 3/7

We will cross the glacial lake in a boat, during which you will get to enjoy views of the Paine massif in addition to the impressive glacier which forms part of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. Near the glacier we leave our boat and spend the rest of the day kayaking on Lake Grey! Then we paddle out into the lake and head towards the eastern face of the glacier! Navigating our way in between gigantic floating icebergs, eventually we come face-to-face with the mightly wall of the glacier itself. Your guide will offer you a snack and hot drink to replenish your energies, while you admire the immensity of the iceberg and its myriad shades of blue. Then we take the boat back passing the glaciar, before we board the van and return to EcoCamp for our evening aperitif and meal. Overnight at Ecocamp Patagonia. Day 8: Patagonia Horse Riding Southern Patagonia One of the best ways to enjoy all that Patagonia has to offer is by experiencing it on horseback. The excursion departs at 9:30am, after we have had a hearty breakfast at EcoCamp. We will admire the most spectacular parts of Paine hill with a full day of horseback riding. We will venture through forest and cross streams, all the while surrounded by amazing greenery. There are 5 different prairies along this trip and experienced riders are welcome to gallop through these parts at their leisure. If you visit in February, you will be able see the Encantado valley. Lunch will be served at the Seron campsite, where we will enjoy a spectacular view, featuring parts of las Torres, Mount Admiral Nieto, the Blue lagoon and the Paine river. Depending on our group we can decide to stay out riding past 4:00pm or choose to head back early to EcoCamp and enjoy an evening cocktail. If you are a horseback riding fanatic this is the perfect adventure for you! If this excursion is cancelled because of the weather, it will be replaced by the trek to the French Valley. Overnight at Ecocamp Patagonia. 4/12

92 10D HUILO HUILO PATAGONIA EXTREMES DETAILED ITINERARY Day 9: Trek to the Towers Base Torres del Paine NP We will walk from the campsite towards Hotel Las Torres before ascending to Ascencio Valley on the Tower's eastern face. Mountain ridges, beech forests and small rivers line the scenic walk towards the valley. Our big challenge comes in the form of the steep moraine, a huge mass of boulders which will lead us to that iconic base-view of the Towers - three gigantic granite monoliths, the remains of a great cirque sheared away by the forces of glacial ice. After a tough uphill climb, the Towers eventually come into full view, rising majestically before us, with the glacial lake visible below. Is there any better place in the world to have lunch? After feasting on the view and our picnic, we backtrack along the same trail through Ascencio Valley and return to EcoCamp for a well-deserved dinner. Overnight at Ecocamp Patagonia. Day 10: Departure Day Torres del Paine NP, Chile We will take an early morning transfer, sit back, relax, and enjoy a scenic ride back to Punta Arenas in time to catch the evening flight to Santiago. 5/12

98 10D HUILO HUILO PATAGONIA EXTREMES RATES AND CONDITIONS Climate Northern Patagonia The Patagonian temperate rain forest is located in Chilean territory, between latitudes 38 30'S to 55 30'S, west of the Andes. It is characterized by its abundant rainfall throughout the year and vits warmer summers (hot days reaching up to 30 degrees Celsius). This rainy weather is the product of moisture carried by anticyclonic winds from the South Pacific, which are condensed by the cold coastal Humboldt Current. Upon entering the continent, this humidity falls as rain on the Andes, and dissipates when colliding with dry winds from the Argentinian Patagonian steppes. Southern Patagonia In Torres del Paine during the spring or early summer, fine weather may deteriorate almost without warning, bringing rains and possibly snow. Autumn can also be unpredictable and winter is bitterly cold. Even in summer (December to March), cold strong winds (up to 130 km/hr) and rainfall are not uncommon. The summerʼs average temperature is 11ºC/52ºF (24ºC max, 2ºC min). Rest assured, however, that just as quickly as the weather turns nasty, it can become pleasantly warm. Night-time temperatures will most likely range from 1 C to -5 C (30s and 40s ºF) depending on the weather. Physical Demand The Chilean Patagonia Extremes Program combines different disciplines and outdoor sports such as mountain biking, trekking, rafting, ziplines/canopy, kayaking and horseback riding. The trekking portions of the program (days 2 and 9) require the greatest physical effort. Huilo Huilo: Trekking activities (10 km) and mountain biking (6 kilometers) are performed on rocky terrain with steep ascents and descents, by trail or road in the middle of the forest. The rafting activity is active and challenging, on category III / IV rapids. The team must constantly paddle to correct their direction, and the navigation time is approximately 2 hours, throughout the entirety of which you will have contact with water. The ziplines/canopy activity requires no particular level of physical fitness, except a maximum weight of 100 kilos (220 lb.) to perform the activity. Physical fitness and health is required for the entire program. If you have a special condition or disability that might impede you from joining us on the program or from using the hotel facilities, please consult with our staff before making your reservation in order to avoid any inconvenience. 11/12 7/7

You should bring a comfortable backpack for trekking (minimum 10 litres), trekking shoes, a windbreaker (important!), a parka, comfortable pants for walking, a swimming suit, a camera, a flashlight, sunblock, sunglasses, a change of clothes in case of rain, and a hat and/or bandana to protect you from the sun. It is important to bring money in cash, in case you wish to purchase souvenirs. The hotel services are able to accept credit/debit card payments, but there are no ATMs nearby, so cash is necessary in order to pay for artisanal and other products. In Torres del Paine, there are no credit/debit card services or ATMs - the last ATM is in Puerto Natales. 12/12
