13 CENTRAL VALLEY AND PACIFIC COAST DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN SAN JOSÉ - COSTA RICA Arrival at Juan Santamaría International Airport. Greeting by the Program Director and specialized guide. Transfer to the hotel in the San José Metropolitan Area. Cocktail and Latin American hors d oeuvres. Special activity: Welcome dinner and folkloric dance exhibition.. Accommodation: Costa Rica Marriott Hotel or similar. DAY 2: POÁS VOLCANO NATIONAL PARK DOKA COFFEE PLANTATION Departure from San José passing through Alajuela, the second largest city in the country, founded by the Spaniards in 1789 under the name of Villa Hermosa. Then, crossing rural and urban areas you will enjoy a beautiful landscape with dairy farms, coffee and sugar cane plantations and vegetable planted fields. At 2700m (8860ft) above sea level, the Poás Volcano produces eruption cycles similar to geysers, throwing columns of muddy water and steam a few meters or several kilometers up. These eruptions have made Poás known as the largest geyser in the world. You can hike along a natural path to Lake Botos, an ancient crater, surrounded by volcanic vegetation. Special activity: toast on the top of a mountain overlooking the volcanoes of the Central Mountain Range. After the visit, continue to the Doka coffee plantation, a farm owned by the same family for more than a century. Learn about the traditional techniques of coffee farming, milling and roasting. Located at 1350m (4500ft) above sea level, the altitude and abundant sunshine are the perfect combination for growing coffee. 14 CENTRAL VALLEY AND PACIFIC COAST DAY 3: TROPICAL FOREST AERIAL TRAM IN THE CARIBBEAN SOFT RAFTING ON THE SARAPIQUÍ RIVER Departure to Limón, the Afro Caribbean province of Costa Rica. When crossing the Central Volcanic Range, you will experience variations in climate, temperature and landscape. The adventure begins when you arrive at the tropical rainforest aerial tram. A small bus takes you to the reception, where a specialized guide will give you a brief explanation on the construction of the aerial tram. Then you will go up on gondolas specially designed for this project. Each one has a for 6 persons. The guide will accompany you during the tour. Enjoy the unique experience of watching the forest canopy at a height of 30m (100ft) as well as the most exotic plants which grow on the top of the trees. Then continue to the exotic region of Sarapiquí. Here, you will softly raft down this river, while your guide shows you the great natural wealth in this area. You will see different species of animals such as monkeys, birds, iguanas, sloths, crocodiles and river turtles, among others. Special activity: : Caribbean party. Accommodation: Hotel Costa Rica Marriott or similar DAY 4: SAN JOSÉ HIKE IN A TRANSITIONAL TROPICAL FOREST HERRADURA BEACH Departure from San José using the road that crosses the Aguacate Mountains to get to Tárcoles. The hiking adventure starts in a 5-hectare (12 acres) tropical botanical garden containing more than 500 species of heliconias, bromeliads, and ornamental and medicinal plants from different parts of the world. Continuation through the Macaw private forest reserve, a 100-hectare biodiversity oasis covered by mature and secondary low and pre-mountainous forests. It is certainly a privileged place for nature lovers. Discover the tropical forest and enjoy the wonderful beaches in the Park. There are several points of particular interest: the Tómbolo in Punta Catedral which unites the old Cathedral Island with land, and the blowing hole of Puerto Escondido. Watch a huge amount of fish at low tide. The area includes several habitats that are home to 109 species of mammals and 184 species of birds. Special activity: : Lunch with a view to the Park and bar and cocktail course. In the afternoon, departure on a catamaran to watch the beauty of sunset on the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean. DAY 2: EL VIEJO HACIENDA AND TEMPISQUE RIVER SUNSET SAILING Departure to El Viejo Hacienda, a 14000ha private property surrounded by Palo Verde Dry Forest National Park, that includes a 2000ha wildlife and wetland reserve for protecting flora and fauna in danger of extinction. A boat tour in the Tempisque River across this Reserve will allow you to watch wildlife at its best, including 280 bird species, 76 mammal species, 55 amphibian and reptile species and more than 740 extraordinary flora species. Special activity: Lunch in La Casona with tastings of typical Guanacaste dishes. At the end of the afternoon, departure in a catamaran to observe marine wildlife accompanied by the soft sound of waves and a magnificent sunset on the Pacific Ocean. Special activity: Transfer by land to enjoy a Costa Rican Bar-B-Q while listening to marimba music and watching a typical Guanacaste folkloric dance show.
