11 Grand Japan Cruises Tales of the Samurai They are feared and revered even in the West Japan s legendary Samurai warriors. From humble beginnings as provincial warriors in medieval Japan to their ascension to power as part of the shogunate feudal system in the 12th century, the samurai carved out a place of lore in the country s history. Samurai of all periods wore beautifully elaborate armor, and were renowned for their sword skills and the craftsmanship of their katana (swords). The Meiji Restoration and opening of Japan to the West in the mid to late 19th century saw the decline of the influence of the samurai. But today, visitors can tour preserved samurai houses and see reenacted samurai sword battles, experiencing some of the legend for themselves.
