19 Chiang Rai The city and province of Chiang Rai are in the northernmost part of Thailand, and the province forms part of the Golden Triangle where the borders of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet. This is probably not the best place to visit with young children, but for teens who love open-air adventure it offers some magical opportunities; among them trekking or mountain biking along trails used by hilltribe villagers, rafting down the Kok river and elephant rides in the jungle. The countryside is steeped in history, being home to one of Thailand s oldest civilizations, the independent Lanna kingdom, and the sights and ancient ruins are totally different to those elsewhere in the country.
