7 BANGKOK Bangkok The city of angels is a great base for exploring the surrounding countryside, and, a fascinating, colourful metropolis in its own right. Day trips to the Floating Market, the Bridge on the River Kwai and Safari World theme park are all very popular. 13 CHIANG MAI Chiang Mai With its laid-back attitude and relaxed pace of life Chiang Mai is ideal for spending quality time with your children; especially if they like adventure! 15 CHIANG RAI Tea Plantation Chiang Rai The city and province of Chiang Rai are in the northernmost part of Thailand, and the province forms part of the Golden Triangle where the borders of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet. This is probably not the best place to visit with young children, but for teens who love open-air adventure it offers some magical opportunities; among them trekking or mountain biking along trails used by hilltribe villagers, rafting down the Kok river and elephant rides in the jungle. The countryside is steeped in history, being home to one of Thailand s oldest civilizations, the independent Lanna kingdom, and the sights and ancient ruins are totally different to those elsewhere in the country. Wat Phra That Doi Tung for instance, located on top of Doi Tung Mountain, was built in the 10th century and has lines of bronze bells marking the road to the entrance and two chedis. However, just because this is the rural north doesn t mean you won t enjoy some fabulous amenities.
