Inland, it can feel as if you have passed into another century, with sleepy villages nestling in the folds of the Troodos Mountain, amidst goats, olive groves, lemon trees and wild flowers, while groups of seated men contemplate life from beneath the fabled tree of idleness. Painted churches and dramatically positioned monasteries dot the landscape. The island invites exploration. A land so varied yet in such a compact space, with such differences in geography and cultural influences, is a perfect setting for the more independently-minded traveller. Ever helpful, the Cypriots even drive on the left-hand side of the road! Desired by Phoenicians and Greeks, Romans and Venetians, Ottomans and the British, Cyprus is but a four and a half hour flight from the UK. Once described as a huge archaeological site, it still retains a timeless physical beauty. 3 Cyprus Itineraries Itinerary 10 days / 9 nights An Open-Air Museum Cyprus has a rich history and due to its strategic position in the Mediterranean has been invaded by the Greeks, Persians, Romans, Phoenicians, Normans, Venetians, Turks and British to name but a few. Below we suggest a fly-drive itinerary which covers some of what the island offers. Feel free to alter to suit your preferences. We are here to guide and advise. You will also find further suggested itineraries on our website. Day One Arrive Larnaca or Paphos s, collect your car and drive to The Library Hotel in Kalavassos - Overnight at The Library Hotel on bed and breakfast. Day Two In the morning visit the Neolithic World Heritage site of Khirokitia and the excavations at Tenta. We suggest lunch in a fish taverna at Zygi and on to explore Larnaca, the island s third largest city and site of Hala Sultan Tekke, the burial place of Umm Haram, Mohamed s wet-nurse and the third holiest shrine for Muslims - overnight Library Hotel on bed and breakfast. Day Three Drive west to visit the ruins of the kingdom of Ancient Amathus, dating from 1,000 BC and then on to Limassol, the island s second largest city. Spend the day exploring the city and especially the old town - overnight Library Hotel on bed and breakfast. Day Four A day spent exploring the traditional wine villages of Lefkara, Drys, Vavla, Skarinou and Vasa and then on to the Troodos mountains. Overnight at the New Helvetia Hotel, Platres. Days Five & Six Head for Nicosia, the island s capital to visit the archeological museum, the old town and The Green Line dividing the south from the Turkish occupied north - overnights Classic Hotel on bed and breakfast. Day Seven Drive to Paphos with a stop at the Knight Hospitalers Kolossi Castle and on to the spectacularly located Hellenistic and Roman city of Curium (Kurion) followed by a visit to the World Heritage site of Palea Paphos and Aphrodite s Temple, 12 or so Kilometres from Nea Paphos and the modern city and resort. In antiquity, Paphos was the birthplace of Aphrodite the goddess of love - overnight Axiothea Hotel, Paphos on bed and breakfast. Days Eight Explore modern, Pano and Kato Paphos within which area lies ancient Nea Paphos, the tombs of the Kings and the remarkable and world famous mosaics of the Houses of Dionysos, Theseus and Aion. Paphos is like an open-air museum and a world Heritage site - overnight Axiothea Hotel on bed and breakfast. Day Nine The area between Paphos and Polis on the north coast boasts several very interesting monasteries in very picturesque locations which are well worth visiting like Aghios Neophytos and Panayia Chrysorrogiatissa. There are also some very interesting villages in the mountains above Paphos. Alternatively, drive along the coast to the Akamas National Park and stop off for a swim at one of the many beaches along the coast - overnight Axiothea Hotel on bed and breakfast. Day Ten After breakfast, depending on the time of your return flight, time for some shopping or relaxing by the pool before driving to the airport. All the itineraries can be adjusted and tailored to fit your requirements. Itinerary 8 days / 7 nights Walkers & Nature Lovers Cyprus is not only a sun and beach destination. The mountains are heavily forested with pine and cedar and their villages untouched by tourism. The Akamas National Park is a virtually unblemished Mediterranean landscape, much the same now as it was two thousand years ago. The itinerary below covers what we feel you should see and experience. You don t have to walk everywhere, after all you do have a car. You can mix driving through the landscapes with walking to suit your preferences. The suggested walks are not difficult. All are grade one or two and suitable for all adults of fair to good fitness levels. A guide to the trails which are all waymarked will be supplied with your booking confirmation. Day One Arrive at either Larnaca or Paphos s, collect your car and drive to the Latchi area - overnight at the beachfront Aphrodite Beach Hotel on bed and breakfast. We would always recommend lunch or evening meals are taken here as the cooking is homely and traditional. Day Two Spend the morning at the beach below the hotel and after lunch drive to Neo Chorio (about 15 minutes) to follow the circular 5km (2 hour) Smigies Trail through the Akamas Forest for some spectacular views - overnight Aphrodite Beach Hotel on bed and breakfast. Day Three Make an early start and drive to the Baths of Aphrodite (10 minutes from the hotel) and either take the circular 7.5km (3 to 4 hour) Adonis Trail or the similar length Aphrodite Trail. Both trails explore different aspects of the Akamas National Park. We suggest lunch at a fish taverna in nearby Latchi Harbour and the afternoon relaxing on the beach - overnight Aphrodite Beach Hotel on bed and breakfast. Day Four There are several interesting villages to explore in this northwest region Like Droushia, Neo Chorio, Kathikas and Arodes to name but a few. All are between 15 and 45 minutes drive from the hotel and all have good local tavernas for lunch. There is also a very interesting coastal drive through the town of Polis to Pyrgos which will take about two hours - overnight Aphrodite Beach Hotel on bed and breakfast. Day Five Drive from Latchi through the Paphos and Troodos ranges on forestry roads to the mountain village of Kalopanagiotis - a three to four hour picturesque route. Make an early start because, on the way you should stop to visit forestry station at Stavros Tis Psokas (1,000 metres above sea level) and the most famous of the Cypriot monasteries, Kykkos - overnight at Casale Panayiotis in Kalopanagiotis on bed and breakfast. Day Six Two walks today, so make an early start. One starts from the village, the Kalopanagiotis to Oikos Village linear trail 4km (1.5 hours). This includes visiting the church of Aghios Ioannis Lambadistis a listed UNESCO World Heritage site. Then drive to Troodos Square (45 minutes) to walk the Atalanti circular trail (14km 4 hours) through some of the most ancient forests of Black Pine and Troodos Juniper (one Juniper is 800 years old) with some spectacular views. After such an energetic day we would recommend dinner back at your hotel - overnight Casale Panagiotis on bed and breakfast. Days Seven There are some delightful twisting drives through interesting villages in the Troodos mountains and there are four more UNESCO World Heritage site, ancient churches which should not be missed: Archangelos, Aghios Nikolaos Tis Stegis, Panagia Tis Podythou and, they say, the best of them all, Panagia Forviotissa in Asinou. Overnight at Linos Inn, Kakopetria. Days Eight Drive to either Larnaca or Paphos s for your flight home. 4 Cyprus Pomos Villa Stella Maris, Pomos - Polis and Akamas Region This is one of the most dramatic locations on the north coast. 300 metres behind the villa are the wooded foothills of the Paphos mountain range. This is untamed countryside, a haunting landscape particular to the area. Villa Stella Maris is furnished in a fresh, contemporary style, perfect for holidaymakers to relax in comfort. Built in 2004, the property is owned by the same family that owns Villa Anax. From its elevated position the views are excellent and the cool breeze is a welcome relief from the Cypriot summer sun. The villa is well located with the beach and the centre of Latchi, with its cafes, restaurants and tavernas, only 5 minutes away by car or 20 minutes on foot. There are many good beaches in the area.
