BERLIN For most of the latter part of the 20th century, Berlin has stood as a symbol of the division between East and West, split by the infamous fortified wall erected to separate the socialist sector from the democratic district. When the Berlin Wall was demolished in 1990 the city discovered that it suddenly had two of everything, most notably two very distinct societies separated both socially and economically. The past decade has seen Berlin embracing unification and rebuilding itself as a modern European capital marks the 26th anniversary of the Berlin Wall coming down.

Since then it has frequently changed names, being known as Zurn Roten Dachl (The Little Red Roof), and then Zurn Goldenen Engel (The Golden Angel), but it has always been an inn, and like Vienna, it went through many happy but also grim and turbulent times. In 1852, Leopold Schmied, innkeeper at the time, introduced the then brand-new Pilsner Urquell beer, and it was from here that this incomparable beer set off to conquer the world. In 1897 Franz Hauer acquired the Griechen Beisl from his father-inlaw and successfully turned it into a thriving business. Hauer became the greatest art collector in Vienna as well as the discoverer of numerous artists of great importance! As a testimony to these encounters, the Mark Twain Room still conserves the autographs of these famous artists. AUSTRIAN HOLIDAYS Classic Room Entrance to Hotel Kaiserhof The Griechenbeisl became a meeting place for many prominent artists, academics and politicians over the years: Beethoven, Schubert, Wagner, Strauss, Brahms, Waldmuller, Mark Twain, Grillparzer, Nestroy, Schwind, Chaliapin, Lueger and Graf Zeppelin to name but a few, all of whom felt the eternal spirit of centuries past whilst eating and drinking in blissful reverie.
