A view to the past Dear iends, welcome to our island, This month s issue is a view to the past. Old Oia, Santorini before and aſter the 1956 earthquake and how the island has developed. Tourists have arrived, old buildings have been restored and turned into boutique hotels. Santorini of the past does not go too far in the past. It is quite recent, if we consider that, before becoming a bustling international tourist destination, Santorini was a relatively poor island, where the volcanic ground was particularly difficult to cultivate, let alone to feed livestock. Residents cultivated a few vegetables (such as cherry tomatoes and white eggplants), fava beans, barley and went fishing. Water for extensive crop or tree cultivation did not exist and the meat was rare in their diet and came mostly om hunting birds. This side of Santorini is still here and strangely mixed with the modern side of the island. You will be able to feel that if you hold an old photo and compare it with the landscape nowadays. This feeling is, at the same time, one of the most charming features of the island. Nikos Psarros santotraveler@gmail.com

AEGEAN HISTORY 04 The 1956 earthquake Lefteris Zorzos Archaeologist History The 9th of July has been the most significant day of the year for the last 60 years on the island of Santorini. Early in the morning on the 9th of July 1956 the Aegean was devastated by a massive 7.5 Richter earthquake with the epicentre being just south of the island of Amorgos. It was the largest earthquake in Europe for the 20th century. A few minutes later, a second earthquake followed with a 6.9 magnitude causing even more damage to the islands. The earthquakes also resulted in a huge tsunami with waves reaching up to 25 meters. The earthquake resulted in 53 deaths and over 100 people being seriously injured. The damage caused by the earthquake was mainly evident on the island of Santorini where the largest settlements like Fira (the capital), Kontohori, Oia, Imerovigli, Pyrgos, Megalohori, Episkopi Gonias and Messaria faced the most devastating results. The death toll would have been much higher if the earthquake had happened earlier or later in the day. The earthquake hit shortly after 5.00 am, a time when the largely agricultural population of the island was at the fields collecting the characteristic small cherry tomatoes, a very important agricultural product for the local economy. Over a dozen tomato factories existed at the time on the island despite the island facing financial distress and several years of recession. The earthquake came as the end of an era in an already difficult time period with poverty and hardship for the island inhabitants. The earthquake caused immense damage to many of the larger buildings, particularly the neoclassical mansions that had several levels. This is particularly evident in Fira, Messaria and Pyrgos where some of the most impressive buildings of the late 19th century collapsed shortly after the earthquake. Many of these buildings have been abandoned for the last 60 years as the cost for the restoration is extremely high. Recently, the Athens Polytechnic School has recorded several of these buildings that give us an insight into 19th century architecture on the island. The next day saw the immediate response by the government and military despite the initial shock. Three battleships arrived the next day from Piraeus, organised to a large extent by Markos Nomikos who was a member of parliament and originally from Kontohori and Fira. Temporary camps were established using tents and remained there for several months. The next phase saw the vast reconstruction taking place to rebuild the island, but also to create new buildings and settlements that were 'earthquake proof'. This involved extensive planning and architectural decisions that had to be made in a very short period of time. The island had changed forever and a new chapter had began. The island landscape and the architecture would never be the same. The 9th of July is a day of tremendous significance for everyone who is from Santorini. It forms a significant moment in time and preserving the memory from this event is of vital importance. As soon as the earthquake hit the island, those who were still asleep or at home started running to safety in the nearby fields. All the different villages had a specific area where everyone gathered in order to treat the wounded and exchange information. The first reports reached Athens and thereafter across the globe. The newspapers wrote about how the earth shook and the volcano (!) erupted. Even though the volcano had not erupted, the huge amount of dust caused by the earthquake and the memories of the recent eruptions came to mind. The Therans were used to living with the volcano with several eruptions taking place between , the 1920s and 1930s, all the way up until 1950.

The Documentary In an effort to record what the island looked like before the earthquake, the experience of the morning of the 9th of July as well as life on the island afterwards, we have started to film personal accounts of this experience. Nikos Korakakis and the author are creating a documentary about the earthquake that will be presented on the 9th of July this year in Pyrgos. This forms part of a wider project where over 7000 photographs have been digitized from several different collections recording all aspects of life, the landscape and the architecture of Santorini from the 19th century up until As it can be seen from the photographs, interviews from a dozen individuals across the island have been done. The interviews form an incredible testimony that is extremely important to record. The interviews have been conducted at historic places across the island like the Folklore Museum in Kontohori, the Nautical Museum in Oia, the Langadas Mansion in Pyrgos (Villa Ioulia) and the Catholic churches in Fira as it is important to preserve them and present them to the wider public. Apart from the documentary, an exhibition with original photographs, magazines and newspapers from 1956 will open in the evening on the 9th of July at the Estia of Pyrgos Exhibition Space. Shortly after, the documentary will be presented for the first time. On the same day, an event for the 60 years from the earthquake will take place in Kamari village. Photos from Emanouil Lignos, Dimitris Tsitouras, Maria Nomikos collections and the Catholic Church archive. AEGEAN HISTORY 05 The memory of this important event is somewhat fading and it is generally a topic that is not discussed openly anymore. This is why it is crucial to record as many of these accounts as possible. The island has experienced minimal volcanic and seismic activity over the past six decades but it is always important to remember what makes it unique.

ARCHITECTURE 06 Architectural Analysis of Traditional buildings and complexes: FINIKIA By the National Technical University of Athens Teachers: Prof. E. Efesiou, Assistant Prof. E. Konstantinidou, Assistant Prof. R. Lavva. Students: E. Adrakta, T. Giako, M. Kavallari, N. Paschali, M. Stylianidou, G. Travlos, T. Tronconi, E. Vargas General Information The settlement of Finikia is located in the Northwest side of the island where a very fertile valley which measures acres lies. The settlement s construction is based on a center focused radial symmetry embracing the alongside small torrential rivers (canals used for the collection of water) which run along the valley. Finikia is closely situated to Oia and acts as a satellite settlement serving its agricultural needs, presenting common attributes to their growth. The settlement is harmoniously placed in its surroundings following the natural terrain and creating an uneven grid which lift aesthetic values to their best.

Characteristics The settlement of Finikia was of an entirely agricultural purpose and because of that it was seasonally inhabited, mainly during wine harvest, when the ship captains (or their representatives) of Oia came to supervise the works, accompanied by workers or sailors. The buildings that we observe are in their majority Kanavas, where the production and barreling of wine took place. The rest of the buildings belonged to the working class, the people who tended the fields during winter. This is the reason why elaborate buildings are not found in the area. The settlement is very functionally designed and built in order to meet its purpose. Cultural Happenings On the 20th of October, one of the greatest festivals on the island takes place, which is attended by all locals. The church of Aghia Matrona, which was built in 1859, is located in the east side of the main road of Finikia. On the previous day, the church is decorated with Vaghia (twigs and leaves of palm trees) due to the Holy festivities, whilst on the same day a procession of the Icon of Saint Matrona walks the narrow streets around the village, which are covered with rosemary and ginger. The church square is crowded with people reveling together with the island s local folk music till morning hours. A traditional meal is generously gathered and offered by the locals which includes Xelouristo (slated cod with onions, olive oil and boiled potatoes), traditionally grilled meat and gamopilafo (a rice recipe usually served on weddings). General Configuration of the Settlement Regarding the village of Finikia, a combination of radial and linear growth is found, directly connected to the tomography of the area. Basic factors that determined the form of the settlement were the need to collect water and the use of construction techniques based on excavation volumes on the side of the rivers. The settlement is divided into four neighbourhoods. One that matches the old core, two along the river and a fourth consisting mostly of newer additions. The road network strictly follows the shape of the landscape in accordance to the rest of the settlement. It s unable to keep linear characteristics so it forms curves mostly due to the face that it follows the so called rivers. It s only accessible to pedestrians and animals. Typology Of all the islands of the Cyclades, a great connection between the buildings and the land can be found in Santorini. 8 SAVE AKROTIRI 08 Kaspersky Lab and the Archeological Society at Athens Extend Cooperation in Akrotiri Understanding the importance of preserving past cultures, for the benefit of future generations, Kaspersky Lab is continuing its cooperation with the Archeological Society at Athens (ASA) to further develop its Akrotiri project, and save the remains of the historic Cycladic/Minoan settlement on the volcanic island of Santorini (Thera). Kaspersky Lab is sponsoring a number of activities to help the scientists further their work, including the restoration of the excavations, the conservation of spectacular wall paintings and the project s building conservation work. Cooperation between the global cybersecurity company and ASA dates back to 2015, when Kaspersky Lab sponsored the renovation of the frescos of Akrotiri. The project has been extended, and recognizing its significance, in 2016 Kaspersky Lab is providing more support to the scientists in different spheres of their research. The work is now focused on collecting new data about the ancient civilization and settlement on the volcanic Greek island of Santorini (Thera). Eugene Kaspersky, Kaspersky Lab Chairman and CEO, explained the importance of the work: Akrotiri is an absolutely remarkable site. It s a treasure for the whole of humankind and there s a threat it could disappear if it s not preserved by archeologists. I believe it s very important to continue exploring the site, as its excavation is likely to bring new artefacts to life. I m very proud that we can support the research process as well as the preservation of this amazing place for future generations. Kaspersky Lab s cooperation with ASA will support several phases of the project at Akrotiri. The first phase will consist of excavations in the House of Benches near the Xeste 3 building. This is where the golden ibex of Akrotiri was found in Because this is the only golden artefact to be discovered at Akrotiri so far, scientists hope that further research and excavation will help them find an altar. The second phase will include work to restore and conserve the wall painting from the Grand Staircase of Xeste 4. During past excavations, several dozen square meters of fragmented wall paintings were retrieved here, but many pieces are still to be found. These wall paintings once decorated the walls flanking all flights of the staircase, and its landings are estimated to cover a total surface of ca. 90m². Kaspersky Lab has previously supported ASA in the conservation of the unit from the East and North wall of the landing on the second floor (ca m²), and this year s project will cover the next unit of similar size: the North and South walls of the fourth flight of the staircase. Kaspersky Lab is also sponsoring the project s building conservation work. The ancient system of wooden building reinforcements is disintegrated, distorting parts of walls and floors. Some rescue measures were taken during the excavations in the s, but the behavior of the monuments under the strains of time, the climatic and environmental conditions, and earthquakes, has not been fully studied yet. Kaspersky Lab is sponsoring the on-site mapping of the present state of preservation of the ruins and analysis and classification of collected data about the monuments, to help scientists find the best ways to save the buildings from decay. The support we get from Kaspersky Lab helps us continue our work in several directions at once, and I am very glad that our cooperation with the company continues for the second year running, says Dr. Dora Vassilicos, Member of the Board of the Archeological Society at Athens.

The contribution to the science and to studying the ancient civilization is indispensable and I hope that the more we find the more people will be interested in history and culture of Akrotiri. Professor Christos Doumas, Director of the Excavations at Akrotiri comments: Akrotiri has always been a special place for me and for many people who work here. We continue the work in order to get answers to the questions about the inhabitants of the island who lived here thousands of years ago. I am very pleased and grateful to see that Kaspersky Lab is interested in our work and is ready to support our long-term project. The company brings great opportunities to our scientific research. We discuss the plans for the future as I hope that Kaspersky Lab will become our long-term partner when speaking of future cooperation. 10 Hermoupolis: The Capital City of the Cyclades Islands SYROS ISLAND 10 Carolina Rikaki The Cyclades is a group of Greek islands in the Aegean Sea, southeast of the mainland. Many of the islands, like Santorini, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros etc are popular holiday destinations, known for their beaches, ancient sites, rugged landscapes and traditional blue-andwhite towns overlooking the sea. The capital of this island complex is the island of Syros and its own capital, Hermoupolis. In fact, Hermoupolis is quite different from the typical island capitals of the Cyclades. It s got an urban architecture, with beautiful neoclassical buildings and a truly aristocratic atmosphere. The reason is obvious. Before Athens and Piraeus port, Hermoupolis used to be the leading commercial and industrial center of Greece in the 19th century. Many ships were built in the shipyards and a lot of industries were based on the city. It had a Commercial Court of Law, a post office (one of the first in Greece), insurance brokerages, the first public school, a branch of the National Bank of Greece, art gallery, the famous Apollo theater, a museum, library, a social club for the elite society etc. The Greek Steamship Company was also founded in A period of decline then followed in the beginning of the 20th century, as the importance of the geographical situation of the island was reduced and Piraeus port finally took the predominant position in Greece. The population reduction during World War II was a hard blow and it was in the 80s when Syros, along with the generalized economic recovery and the rise of the living standards in Greece, recovered with tourism as its central axis. The prosperity of Syros was connected with the development of social and cultural life of the residents, both Catholic and Orthodox Christians.

AEGEAN STORY 12 Lighthouse Saves Keeper Russian Admiral becomes Greek Keeper Dolores Reyes-Pergioudakis I came across a profound statement from a Greek lighthouse keeper when I was researching and translating materials for The Lighthouses of Greece. A Russian Admiral turned Senior Chief Petty Officer, Nikolaos Filosofof, in December 1924, when he became keeper of Elafonisos Lighthouse stated, Where I saved so many shipwreck victims, I am also being saved from the shipwreck of life. His story sheds light on his statement. Earlier, in 1908, a winter storm shipwrecked the Imperatriche, a transatlantic steamship bound from Trieste to Bombay. Captain Nikolaos Filosofof, skipper of the Russian cruiser Hivendis, who was stationed on Crete Island as the head of the Russian Naval Force, rushed to the scene. The ship had hit a PHOTO 1: Stylianos Lykoudis shoal near Elafonisos (or Elafonisi = Deer) Islet, in western Crete. Thirtyeight people perished, but Captain Filosofof rescued 108. He received a medal from the Greek government and met many dignitaries, among them Stilianos Lykoudis, Director of the Greek (Hellenic) Lighthouse Service. (see photo 1) Later, after the unification of Greece, he returned to St. Petersburg, Russia, where he impressed Tsar Nicholas II and rose in rank to Admiral. His loyalty to the Tsar during the Russian Revolution condemned him when the Tsar fell. He suffered the loss of both of his sons, one to the revolution, the other to suicide. The final straw was the death of his grieving wife. Without a family, he escaped from Odessa, Russia, and walked across Siberia to Turkey. He carried three books with him: the Bible, the List of Lights for the Black Sea, and the genealogy of his family. Inside a book he also carried a few photos. (see photo 2) At the age of 52, he arrived in Athens to become a guest of the King of Greece. Eventually, he learned to speak fluent Greek, and gained Greek citizenship. Soon, he met another refugee - Maria Ivanova Tsoukalo. He felt hope at that point and married in July However, it was short-lived. Tragedy struck again! After a few months of marriage, his wife died of a sudden illness. He truly felt that his life was a shipwreck! Filosofof sought to cloister himself after so many losses. In seeking the isolation of a lighthouse keeper, he turned to Stilianos Lykoudis, still director of lighthouses, who had befriended him earlier when he received his medal for bravery in Lykoudis appointed him keeper of Greece s newest lighthouse built on Elafonisos (Deer) Islet (see sketch), on Crete Island, where he had bravely rescued the shipwreck victims of the Impreratriche. What a coincidence! When Filosofof took the lighthouse keeper s oath in 1924, received the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer he stated, Where I saved so many shipwreck victims, I am also being saved from the shipwreck of life.

Filosofof lived for many years in isolation but comfortable at Elafonisos. The Elafonisos Lighthouse no longer exists after the W.W. II and has been replaced by a light tower. However, a sketch of Elafonisos by Sotiria Karagianni, a Greek Lighthouse resident, is provided. To Santorini PHOTO 2: Nikolaos Filosofof CRETE AEGEAN STORY 13 Elafonisi Light A new Light replaced the old Lighthouse Filosofof s story doesn t end there, it has a happy ending with Greek love. 14 AEGEAN TREASURES 14 The famous C aper [Capparis orientalis Veill. (Synonyms: Capparis spinosa subsp. Orientalis (Veill.) Jafri, Capparis rupestris Sm.] Sampson Katsipis, Naturalist and Physics Teacher Caper is a small bush found throughout the Mediterranean and can reach a height of over a meter. It is usually found hanging in rock crevices and in stone walls where the bush covers the rocky surface thus helping the ground not to lose the water from high temperature. It forms a well-developed root system that extends and branches out a lot, that's why the capers require arid Mediterranean climate. In Santorini, we can find caper bushes everywhere along the roads, in old houses walls but it also abounds in the caldera. Being very resistant to salt, it can even grow next to the waves. Tsikouras, Balos and Armeni beaches are a paradise for caper pickers. The Use of capers in Santorini Nothing is wasted when we pick capers. The small buds, the "kaparokoumpa", are picked even before they bloom and then they are cured with coarse salt. Under the effect of salt, they undergo fermentation and capric acid is formed, which offers its characteristic flavor. Being in the salt, kaparokoumpa can be maintained for several Caper on the Rocks The value of kaparokoumpa is inversely proportional to their size. Small kaparokoumpa have the greatest value: Non-Pareil (less than 7 mm) Surfines (7-8 mm) Capucines (8-9 mm) Capotes (9-11 mm) Fines (11-13 mm) Grusas (over 14 mm) years. Before we consume them, we need either to rinse them with water or to put directly on top of the salads, typically with tomato and katsouni (the local cucumber). Moreover, we can place them in jars with vinegar, adding oil on top, or even in plain oil. Caper Leaves Kaparokoumpa

We pick kaparokoumpa from April to June and is a laborious and time-consuming process. The old residents of Santorini, who had connected every moment of their life with the saints, said that the buds are picked until the Agioi Anargyroi celebration, on 1 July. Indeed, in June, the buds are attacked by an insect that pierces in to give birth there, so they are not edible. The larger buds are dried in the sun and then kept tightly closed in jars. Before drying them in the sun, some people put them in the freezer for three or four days to sterilize them from the insects, while others throw them a couple of minutes in boiling water. Dried kaparokoumpa is a local specialty and can be combined with another local specialty, the fava beans. Caper leaves are also delicious. After boiling them for about five minutes, we rinse them with water to wash away the bitterness, we store them in vinegar or brine. They are particularly used in salads, just like kaparokoumpa. At many local festivals, such as Agios Epifanios at Akrotiri, caper leaves with fava beans are offered to people attending the celebration. The caper fruit, the "Katsounaki" or "cucumber", can also be kept in brine or vinegar when they are still tender, like kaparokoumpa. They can also be dried and cooked in many ways. The "katsounaki" is considered by locals as medicine to drop high blood sugar levels. Caper Cultivation Until now, it was believed in Santorini that capers were impossible to grow unless an ant got the seed and buried it in a stone wall. Therefore people placed katsounaki between the stones for the ant to get the seeds. But things are not exactly so. If we put caper seeds in containers during October or November and then water them until April, the first plants begin to appear. Then, after they grow a little, they are transplanted to larger pots and next year (usually in spring) they are transferred at their final position. When transplanting, a lot of attention is needed not to destroy the root of the young plant. It is also very important to water them at least 3 times a week for the first 2 years because they have not yet developed a sufficient root system and are very sensitive. Capers are grown in Italy, Turkey, Cyprus etc. We can find pickled capers or even caper buds or leaves imported in Santorini from Turkey. The wild and cultivated capers should be pruned well, all the branches should be removed and only the stump should be left. Only new branches give buds. Pruning is done in winter (December-January). 18 FADING VILLAGE 18 'Personal impressions of the former Oia' Fading Village Erik Lieber The 1980s can be considered as the final decade of Oia s life before the arrival of mass tourism. Erik places us into the soul of Oia... Its glory, its grandeur, its harmonious simplicity and its loss. The world he captures is a silent one, a world that nature is slowly reclaiming as its own. There is a melancholy in these grey and stirring photos. Is this for the past long forgotten or is it anticipation and fear about what the future holds? text by Emily Mandilaras biographical information: Erik Lieber (Amsterdam 1950) visited an almost deserted Oia in He returned frequently the following years, captured by the light and architecture. Erik is a doctor. As a photographer he had several solo exhibitions until he started a gallery in contemporary art in the 1990 s. An exhibition with new work is now being prepared. 20 CULTURAL TOURISM 20 Cultural Tourism Why not? Contact with local people is what makes the difference in every cultural tourism programme Ifigenia Georgiadou Let s imagine that we are tourists, visitors to a completely unknown city. We are faced with a choice: there is a tourist guide, who is very eager to offer to show us all the interesting sites of the city guiding us on a sightseeing tour. We will travel by coach to museums, parks and monuments. We will listen to informative talks about the history of the city, about the language of the inhabitants and their origin, and about their customs and feasts. At the end of the day, tired but happy with what we have managed to see in the space of just one day, we will rest, with the impression that all of these pictures and impressions have been somewhat mixed in our head. We could also choose to do something else, though: buy a map and a guidebook of the city from the bookshop and walk around on our own. We will stop at a coffee shop, in order to follow a strange game that is played by some customers. We will turn left, guided by the incredible smell of some freshly made delicacy. We will get lost in a series of small alleyways and feel anxious for a while, until we find our way out. We will finally find where we are through the sign language of a local, who will try to show us the way. We will definitely be tired after walking for many hours, as it will take some time to really get into contact with the city and learn something about it. But in the evening which we may spend not at the hotel but at the warm house of a local that we just met- we will be pleased with ourselves. We will have walked with our own feet, our own rhythm and our own steps on all those roads, streets and alleyways and we will have tasted this city. It will be ourselves who have had control over our itinerary. Following a cultural tourism programme is somehow putting us in the place of the individual walking in an unknown city. It offers merely a structure on which to build your knowledge and experience, a way to travel and learn, not a ready-made recipe for learning the culture of the country you visit. It is only an approach in the essential meaning of this word: coming closer to the learning objective, with a strong will to learn, to conquer the unknown city you always dreamt of traveling to. Original contacts with Greeks is something that needs to be at the heart of any cultural tourism programme. Through this contact something changes to both locals and travellers, if this is done carefully and correctly. They understand each other as people, they change their perceptions about each other and their approach, and shape and develop intercultural skills (Yu & Lee, 2014). This contact creates emotions and personal relationships, which are among the main factors for the return of the traveller to any country. Especially now that the mass media abroad created an unprecedented negative image of Greece, the ability to reverse this picture and create a positive surprise (Hosany, 2012) is through personal contacts between travellers and Greeks. We have to see travellers return to the same place in the light of the relationship that was developed or was not developed with locals. Visiting the farm of a local producer or the workshop of a local artist is an experience, but primarily is a personal human contact. Greece is not a country where one goes without knowing anything at all, much more than this year, Many people talk about Greece, have an opinion about politics and politicians, everybody feel their lives more or less connected with the Greek crisis, especially if Europeans, and have stereotypes and prejudices. It is up to the Greeks - and tourism is called to play this role - to remove their prejudices.

Many people are interested in outdoor cultural activities (Littrell, Paige & Song, 2004: 349): they want to walk a path, they want to take part in an excursion by boat to the Santorini volcano, they want to climb the stairs in Thirassia. What do they take with them when these people leave? Their small souvenirs are any object that a Greek generously gave to them, which is simple and reminds them just that: a place or a person. It's a small stone with a strange shape, a flower root to plant, a dried flower, a food recipe, a favourite song list recommended by a Greek. These are to be kept for themselves, as evidence of their unique experience (Wilkins, 2011: 241), while other local products they buy are to be given as presents to their friends: the fava beans, wine and cherry tomatoes. There are some cultural tourism programmes in Santorini, including the Wine Tours and the HELLENIC CUL- TURE CENTRE s programmes: cultural presentations, Greek dancing and singing lessons, Greek cooking lesson, attending theatrical plays and concerts, visits and discussions in museums and professional workshops or exhibitions, trips to places of great natural beauty and cultural value. One day you can go to a farm to talk about the fava beans and cherry tomatoes, the next day you might arrange Treasure Hunt in Megalohori, the third day you might press grapes by feet at a winery. You can go to learn how ceramics are made by an artist ceramist in Megalochori and create your own ceramic, you can go to participate in local customs such as Klidonas in June or Lazarus during Easter in Megalohori, and Simantra in Perissa, you can decorate the Epitaph with local women in the church of a village. Santorini s Easter is one of the most famous in Greece. Come and explore Santorini at its best, all year long! 22 GREEK CUISINE 22 Dining in Ancient Greece Marietta Papathanasiou As any traveler, you must surely have tasted some of the local dishes in a tavern or an elegant restaurant. And it is very probable that you know all about the Mediterranean diet and its health benefits. But what was the Mediterranean diet based on? What did the ancient Greeks feast upon? In fact, feast is hardly the right word. Their diet was based on three simple things, which were all believed to be presents from the gods: Cereals, especially wheat and barley. They were given to people by Demetra, goddess of harvest and agriculture. Olives, a gift from Athena, the goddess of wisdom. And last, but not least, vines, a great gesture from Dionysus, god of wine and fertility. Greeks were very plain about their food and didn t really ask for much. In fact, Homer calls them bread-eaters. Bread could be accompanied with anything - fish, olives, onion, you name it. It could be even dipped in wine and served as breakfast! Garlic and cheese were very popular, as well as fava, made from mashed lentils or broad beans. Fish were also quite common at lunch or dinner, but meat was quite expensive at the time and therefore rarely served. As a desert, fruit, honey and nuts would be served, along with plenty of wine. The wine was always mixed with water - drinking plain wine was considered a barbaric habit. But what should really be pointed out is that, friends, families and acquaintances were frequently invited to dinner. Offering and accepting food was a way to socialize, communicate with each other, exchange ideas and this notion is still very much alive today. Let s not forget Plato s Symposium that takes place in such an event. So, next time, why don t you invite your friends to dinner? After all, a glass of wine or two with a few close friends, is still a present from the Gods Did you know... The word sycophant (sykofantis in Greek) comes from the word syko that means fig and phainein that means show. In ancient Greece figs were so popular that it was not allowed to export them. When some merchants broke the law, the people that gave them away were called sycophants, meaning someone who spreads malicious rumors without any evidence, a slanderer. Although its meaning has changed over the years in English language, in Greece it still has the same use. What could cosmopolitan Santorini and the lost Atlantis possibly have in common? No incontrovertible evidence of the existence of Atlantis has yet come to light. The fact is that the only reliable written record of this legendary civilisation, shrouded in mystery, is to be found in the dialogues of Plato. This book reveals that if such a civilisation as that of Atlantis ever really existed, the evidence overwhelmingly points to the conclusion that that is exactly what Plato was describing when he wrote about the magnificent Minoan civilisation that reached every corner of the Aegean sea and came to an abrupt end with the cataclysmic eruption of the volcano on Santorini. A delightful journey to one of the world s top tourist destinations and a race against time in the age of the Minoans, the oldest European civilisation the archaeologist s spade has ever brought to light. Available at bookshops in Santorini It is available also: In French with the title "L AT- LANTIDE N A JAMAIS DISPARU", in German with the title "AT- LANTIS WIRD NIE UNTERGEHEN", in Chinese and in Greek with the title "Βυθισµένο Βασίλειο"

He has worked in hotels and restaurants around the island and spent 4 years training in Holland. He has been working in Caldera Ro- mantica restaurant for the last 2 years. Caldera Romantica is exactly what the name denotes: a quiet, romantic restaurant with a different view to the caldera, as it is located in Akrotiri, on the way to the lighthouse. Its menu is mainly Mediterranean cuisine with fusion elements. Its owner, Theodosia Baika, who is also the owner of the hotel, is running everything smoothly and cleverly. SUMMER CUISINE

WORLD TRAVELER 24 Romanian artist Alina Teodorescu is doing an artist-in-residence programme in Santorini and is sharing her experience with us. interview ST: Do you travel a lot as a resident artist? AT: I do! Before coming to Greece, I was in Bali for four months and then in India for two months. I had an exhibition in Romania, then came to Athens for a show in Kifissia at the Taichritzis Visual Art Foundation and here I am, in Santorini with Crossroad Gallery for one month residency. After I finish my program here, I ll be in London and Romania for a while, and from September I will go to Japan for another two months residency followed by a group show at Wood School Museum of Art, Uda Provence. Residencies are essential for our practice. They are incubators for productivity. The modern life made us lose the sense of community and residencies make us share. They bring artists together to learn, develop and explore the specific context that is being created through each program. They also help artists to find funding, network and inspiration, as each place enriches our work through different cultural, geographical and philosophical specific elements. ST: How does traveling help you? AT: Although I have travelled a lot in the years before starting to exhibit internationally, I have realised now that I am discovering the world through different eyes. It s a much more intimate and profound way, through the questions I am being asked at the openings and the way people from different countries relate in different ways to my works. It is a beautiful process and I am extremely grateful for it. ST: Why did you decide to come to Santorini? AT: I came to Santorini as a tourist 7 years ago, while I was still living in Romania, I stayed for 5 days and I loved it. I knew I would be back for longer. Meanwhile, my life got on a new path, I moved to London and the need for connecting to the roots amplified. As a teenager, I worked alongside with my father on painting some Byzantine Orthodox churches and their aesthetic became a language to me. Now, I use some of those elements in my works as a symbol of principals and verticality, blended with semi abstract elements that symbolise the chaos of the modern life. And what other better place to study this topic than Greece? I visited both Byzantine Museums, in Athens and Thessaloniki and I was extremely impressed by them. They are different in many aspects but both of them priceless for my creative process. Santorini created the right context for me to deepening the topic. Therefore, since I arrived I have started to study the old icons painting technique with the master Dimitris Koliousis, who was extremely kind to accept to share some of his impressive experience and expertise with me. So, during this month I will be spending my time between the Crossroad Gallery where I have set my studio and his studio in Oia. ST: What is your work about? AT: I work with the human body. My paintings are part of a process of questioning the notion of beauty, swinging between physical beauty and the original beauty; the duality between sensuality and spirituality. It s about sins and virtues, lights and shadows, early light and twilight- a metaphor for the journey of observing the matters of life through my eyes and capture them in my paintings. It s about being able to live light and playful while torn by radical contrasts within. ST: I see your paintings are not the traditional kind of painting on a canvas. AT: No. In fact I don't stick to a certain media. I try to use all the means to capture and express my ideas. I use the ipad to capture my spontaneous thoughts when I am not in the studio. The apps I use give me the freedom to draw on the screen using my fingers the way I paint on the canvas using the brushes and even more. I make collages with photography, I create animations that give the viewer the chance to enter the creation process and I produce series of works printed on acrylic glass, aluminium or archival paper in editions of 8 or 4. But painting on canvas is close to my heart and it will always be my favourite media. ST: Have you always wanted to be an artist? AT: The answer is yes. Although I had a 10 years detour, I have always known art is my life. My father was an artist, I have studied art in high school and I was supposed to go to an Art university in Romania. Instead I decided to get a training in design and architecture and I have worked as an interior designer for 8 years before exclusively dedicating myself to creating art. This happened 4 years ago when I moved to London and I have started to exhibit in different countries around the world. I had projects in Lebanon, Romania, Thailand, China, Brazil, the UK and Greece. ST: Thank you very much and good luck with your exhibitions! Alina Teodorescu s exhibition Early Light takes place in the Estia of Pyrgos Cultural Association in Pyrgos Central square from 26 June to 8 July.

TRAVEL & HEALTH 26 Ears and Flying MDr. Markos Valvis Ear, nose and throat specialist Fira, Santorini (opposite the post office) t , m What is aeroplane ear? Some people experience ear pain when flying in a plane. Usually this happens as the plane descends to land. The pain may get worse the lower the plane gets and can be quite severe on landing. The pain usually goes away soon after landing. What causes the pain? The pain is caused by unequal pressure that develops between the air in the middle ear and the air outside the ear. The small space in the middle ear behind the eardrum is normally filled with air. This air space is connected to the back of the nose by a tiny channel called the Eustachian tube. The air on either side of the eardrum should be at the same pressure. Air pressure is highest nearer the ground. So as a plane descends, the air pressure becomes higher. This pushes the eardrum inwards which can be painful. To relieve this, the pressure inside the middle ear has to rise quickly too. Air needs to travel up the Eustachian tube into the middle ear to equalise the pressure. How can I prevent ear pain when I fly? Ideally, anyone with an ear infection, cold or respiratory infection, etc, should not fly. However, not many people will cancel their holiday trips for this reason. The following may help people who develop ear pain when flying. Suck sweets when the plane begins to descend. For babies, it is a good idea to feed them or give them a drink or dummy at the time of descent to encourage them to swallow. Try doing the following: take a breath in. Then, try to breathe out gently with your mouth closed and pinching your nose (the Valsalva manoeuvre). In this way, no air is blown out but you are gently pushing air into the Eustachian tube. If you do this you may feel your ears go 'pop' as air is pushed into the middle ear. Do not sleep when the plane is descending to land. If you are awake you can make sure that you suck and swallow to encourage air to get into the middle ear. The above usually works for most people. However, if you are particularly prone to develop aeroplane ear, you may wish also to consider the following in addition to the tips above: Antihistamine tablets (available at pharmacies). Take the recommended dose the day before and the day of travel. A decongestant nasal spray can dry up the mucus in the nose. Spray the nose about one hour before the expected time of descent. Spray again five minutes later. Then spray every 20 minutes until landing. These are only for use for a short time. Decongestant tablets or syrup. Take the dose recommended half an hour before take-off, and if necessary repeat according to the instructions. What is the treatment for aeroplane ear? If the measures above fail to prevent aeroplane ear, although the pain may be severe, it normally goes quickly. Take painkillers such as paracetamol until it does go. Fluid or mucus sometimes accumulates in the middle ear for a few days after the flight, which may make hearing rather dull for a while. This happens if the Eustachian tube is still blocked, and is more likely if you had a cold before flying. To clear it, you could try one of the measures in the section above. For example, the Valsalva manoeuvre, a decongestant or the balloon. You should see a doctor if the pain or dulled hearing does not clear within a few days.
