3 WELCOME TO INTERNATIONAL HOUSE Malta-Gozo It is a pleasure to introduce myself as director of IH Malta-Gozo with my first attempt at an editorial for a language school brochure. My initiation to the industry started 10 years ago when as a student, I took up summer jobs with various local language schools in their leisure departments and in the coordination of the activity programmes. This gave me the opportunity to work closely with the professionals in the business and it enhanced my experience and skills. It also helped me to focus my training on this niche market. 5 years ago INTERNATIONAL HOUSE Malta-Gozo commissioned me to provide the services I had trained for. These services were entrusted to the Leisure Services company I set up. My association with this school gave me the opportunity to be exposed to their local operations as well as to those of its affiliates worldwide has been a year of transition for IH Malta-Gozo where the new owners have brought in fresh ideas and restored the standards and services one has come to expect from an IH school. Our legacy is a sophisticated society surrounded by living history. The long relationship between the Islanders and the various nationalities who occupied Malta over the centuries has created a combination of styles and traditions, giving the Islands a fascinating eclectic culture. Malta is the largest island as well as a cultural, commercial and administrative centre. Gozo is the second largest island and is more rural, characterised by fishing, tourism, crafts and agriculture while Comino is largely uninhabited. With clement weather, a variety of sandy coves and rocky beaches, a thriving nightlife and an intriguing history; there is a great deal to see and do on the Maltese Islands. Walking through quaint villages and discovering captivating places of interest are a must. Prehistoric temples and grand palaces are of great interest to the discerning visitor. The cost of a bus service ranges from 0.35 to 0.58 the average ride is between twenty to thirty minutes. Renting a car is a good option to explore beyond the bus routes. 5 COMINO TAKE IN DIP INTOTHE WATERS OF PARADISE Comino lies between Malta and Gozo; a paradise for snorkelling, diving, windsurfing and walking. Only 3.5 square km, the island is car-free and apart from one hotel, and a family run farm, it is entirely uninhabited. The Island s main attraction is the Blue Lagoon, a sheltered inlet of shimmering aquamarine, accessible by boat trips, cruise tours or sailboat. GOZO THE ISLAND WHERETIME STOOD STILL! Gozo is Malta s second largest island with 29,000 inhabitants and is 14km long and 7km wide. It is a haven of tranquillity and truly has the aura that on Gozo time stands still. It's characteristic plateaus dotted with villages and rural areas with a breath taking landscape and rugged coastline, set the scene for a sojourn influenced by tradition, culture and a peaceful atmosphere. Gozo is a touching base for many foreigners who opt to make Gozo their home away from home. It s a GETTINGTO GOZO way of life with a pace of its own, offering an opera season, an outdoor summer festival and traditional village festas. Moreover Gozo is also considered to be one of Europe s top destinations for diving and its many sites attract enthusiasts all the year round. Other leisure facilities: trekking, cycling, rock-climbing, sailing, fishing with the experts, agrotourism as well as delving in arts and crafts with renowned artists or local and experienced artisans, are all readily available to residents and visitors alike. Gozo can be reached by sea or by air. A regular ferry service carries passengers and cars between the harbour of Cirkewwa in Malta and the harbour of Mgarr in Gozo. The trip takes about 25 minutes. Harbour Air operates a daily Scheduled Seaplane service between the islands of Malta and Gozo. Return flights take approximately 20 minutes and depart from the Valletta Sea Passenger Terminal to Gozo s Mgarr Harbour. GETTING AROUND The public bus service on Gozo is not very efficient or regular; less frequent than on the mainland. The average bus ride is between ten and fifteen minutes. The best way to get around is by bicycle or a car. Renting a car is a good option for exploring the island. Walking and cycling especially in the summer are a pleasure due to the logistics of the island. All the road signs are in English and driving is on the left. 6 IHYOUNG LEARNERS RESIDENTIAL CENTRE, PARADISE BAY, MALTA Learn, and have fun at THE YOUNG LEARNERS RESIDENTIAL CENTRE, Paradise Bay. The spacious and comfortable hotel overlooks the picturesque sister islands of Gozo and Comino. It is surrounded by the clear water of the Mediterranean making it an ideal place for study and having FUN. We cater for Young Learners aged between 10 and 17 years of age. Two programmes run consecutively, one caters for Juniors aged years, the second programme runs for Teens aged years. Accommodation Students rooms are all located in the south wing of the Paradise Bay 4 star leisure resort. Each room includes TV, radio, direct dial touch-tone telephone (incoming calls only), ensuite bathroom with a shower fitting over the bath. All the hotel rooms are standard rooms, fully air-conditioned and have a balcony with sea view. In order to get the students to interact we allocate 3 to 4 per room. Our campus supervisors are present 24hrs on-site to make sure all students needs are met throughout their stay. At no time are the students allowed to leave the premises unaccompanied. Lessons Lessons take place at the hotel, in 4 spacious and airy classrooms which are fully equipped with boards, tables and chairs. A huge air-conditioned assembly hall is also used for multipurpose activities (e.g. testing, on-site activities). Levels of English accepted from Elementary to Upper Intermediate level. Leisure Activities Two programmes run consecutively for the two different age groups (10 13 years; years). The majority of the activities are compulsory, whilst some of the on-site activities are optional. Students can choose to join the optional activity or take free time on the premises. Facilities available Two tennis courts, three outdoor pools, terraces and sun decks. A large indoor pool that is heated during the winter months, a children s play ground with safety flooring, a games room, an internet point. A private sandy beach with water sports during the Summer months and the Gold Palm Diving School operating all year round with PADI qualified diving instructors. General English Mini Group 0900hrs 1230hrs daily Smaller classes, maximum 4, offering a programme of speaking, listening, pronunciation practice, reading, vocabulary, writing and grammar in order to ensure that the student improves on the related skills. English Course 2 to hrs 1230hrs daily This intensive course is limited to 2 students of the same level travelling together, lessons are given by a tutor who plans the course with a view to improve an overall knowledge of English. Participants can combine this course with a further 10 intensive lessons in the afternoons from Monday to Friday. Individual Tuition 1 to hrs 1230hrs daily This intensive course will help participants achieve realistic goals according to their individual needs. The course aims to provide students opportunities for achieving greater fluency and accuracy in the English language. Also suitable for clients whose level of English is below preintermediate. Business Course 1 to hrs 1230hrs daily This is a customised programme based on the duration of the course booked, level of English and the client s needs. Through direct student-teacher interaction the course is designed to assist participants develop the skills needed in their business environment. Intensive Courses - 30 lessons (lessons in the mornings & afternoons) WHY CHOOSE US Intensive English in a Group 0900hrs 1430hrs Mondays to Fridays Intensive Courses offer additional group lessons which are planned in coordination with the morning group lessons. These would focus on improving oral fluency or other weaknesses.
