LIÈGE Liège is one of the largest cities in both Wallonia and Belgium as a whole, and lies northeast, in the valley of two meeting rivers; the Meuse and the Oethe. Its inhabitants, of which there are little less than , predominantly speak French, with German and Dutch speaking minorities. Liège was the birthplace of the industrial revolution in Belgium, being the first place to use steam engines in the coal mines. It was also part of the Sillon Industriel (industrial furrow), a large area of land that was the backbone of Belgian industry, and the economic core of the country in the 19 th century. Liège is often called La Cité Ardente, or The Fiery City, which refers to the title of a book published by Count Henry Carton de Wiart in 1905, telling the tale of a 15th century battle. THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT LIÈGE - Liège is a major Belgian educational hub, with over 40 thousand pupils attending 24 different schools. - Belgium is well known for its waffles, and Liège is no exception. However, alongside the great waffles, meatballs in Liège are very popular. - The stairs Montagne de Bueren is a staircase built as a memorial for the 600 men that fell at the Third Liège war in the 15 th century. It counts 374 steps, and ascends 70 metres in altitude. - The Citadel of Liège was the central fortification of the city in history. Now, the hills on which it is built are a quaint and beautiful park. 4 5
General Information From the AIRPORT to the CITY (and back) Currency The most used currency in Europe is the Euro; it is used by almost all countries in the European Union, which makes it very easy for European tourists to spend money abroad. Before the Euro was introduced, Belgium used the Belgian Franc as its national currency. There are many ATMs (distributeurs automatiques) in Liège, accessible 24 hours every day. The ATM will have a variety of language options, but the default will be French. Visitors from outside the Eurozone are able to exchange money at banks. The exchange fee will be 3 to 5 per transaction. Debit and credit cards, especially Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted. Public Transport The center of Liège is best discovered on foot. Should you have to cover a longer distance, the bus is an ideal and cheap means of transport. In Liège there is an extensive bus network called TEC. You buy a ticket on the bus or at one of the ticket offices at the station. Busses 1 and 4 circle in the centre of the city. It s very simple: almost all buses will take you to the central Place Saint-Lambert. This is often also the final stop, so you do not have to worry about missing the stop. Of course you can always check with one of the friendly residents of Liège or just ask the bus driver if you are heading in the right direction. For about 2 you travel from Guillemins station to the city center. Are you going to use public transport often in one day? Then it is advisable to purchase a day pass. 5 ATTRACTIONS and things to do Entertainment The Royal Opera of Wallonia: Messa di Gloria, Puccini (Saturday 26 may, 20 h) A performance by conductor Claudio Scimone and choirmaster Pierre Iodice and Jean-Michel Allepaerts playing the piece Messa di Gloria, by Giacomo Puccini. The work was first performed on 12 th July 1880 in the cathedral for the Patron Saint of Lucca, San Paolino, and met with resounding success. The large numbers involved, including soloists, a mixed choir, and a full orchestra demonstrated the young musician s mastery of old polyphonic techniques, but also an acute sense of tune and orchestra luxuriance. Liège Royal Philharmonic Orchestra: Rhoda Scott (Sunday 20 may, 16 h) A true jazz legend, Rhoda Scott (also known as the barefoot lady ) has travelled the world for more than 50 years. In the company of the young French drummer Thomas Derouineau, she will perform on the great organ of the Philharmonic Hall. Endowed with an exceptional musical memory, she doesn t hold herself to the programme, and plays according to the inspiration of the moment and the reactions of her audience. Entertainment (continued) Reflektor Club: Jazz Concert with Jacques Stotzem (Friday 25 may, 20 h) Jacques Stotzem jostles the rules of music with a disarming naturalness and redraws with his soul the boundaries of fingerpicking. Random of his moods, his desires, his encounters, he flirts with blues, folk, jazz, rock or sonorities that invite to travel. The music of Jacques Stotzem breathes and sweats its creator. It belongs only to him, and yet, speaks to everyone! The programme of Jacques concert has both his own compositions and a variety of his arrangements of Classic Rock. Cinema Les Grignoux Liège s cultural centre, Les Grignoux, includes three cinemas in three different locations: Parc, Churchill and Sauvenière. Parc and Churchill are rather small-sized and concentrate mainly on art house movies, while Sauvenière, the newest one, is housed in a bigger complex with a number of screening rooms and its own brasserie. It screens the odd blockbuster and, in 2012, hosted the Festival Vidéographies, an award competition for the best in short film and video installations. 8 9
ATTRACTIONS and things to do Exhibitions J aurai 20 ans en 2030 ( I ll be 20 in 2030, 10 h h) The University of Liège was founded on 25 th September To celebrate its bicentenary, the University intends to allude to its past, put the spotlight on its values and outline its challenges through a host of events. The central theme of the exhibition is mankind of the future. All along the immersive exhibition route, visitors pass through large scale settings as well as simulations enriched with displays, explanatory texts and films. The exhibition questions: what hat are the main effects of science on everyday life? Address: Liege Guillemins TGV Station, Parking Niv 1 URL: Exhibitions (continued) Du poil de mommouth à l oeil du cyclope ( From the mammoth hair to the eye of the cyclops ) ( Monday to Friday: 10 h h; Saturday and Sunday: 14 h - 18 h) On the occasion of the festivities planned for the Bicentennial of the University of Liège ( ), the ASBL has joined forces with the project and proposes a programme to promote the university collections of Sciences et Techniques. The exhibition presents over 200 bizarre pieces from each participating collection, whether for their educational value, their aesthetic aspect, their scientific dimension or the way they have integrated the University of Liège since The patrimonial and historical perspective is therefore of paramount importance in the scenographic journey. Address: Institut de zoologie, Quai Van Beneden, Liège Empreintes - Patrimoine Écrit Témoin De L histoire (Patrimony of written history) (Monday to Friday: 9 h - 18 h; Saturday and Sunday: 10 h - 18 h) How has man preserved the memory of his own story? What are these knowledge and works that have passed through the centuries and what of those whose transmission has been forbidden? How has man written down his state of knowledge, through exploration, and his experiences? The exhibition Empreintes questions the role of writing throughout the centuries. Medieval manuscripts, incunabula, prints, maps...: a hundred unique pieces, most of which come from the rich patrimony of the Libraries of the University, are presented to the public. Address: La Cité Miroir, Place Xavier Neujean, 22, 4000 Liège URL: Viva Roma! (Tuesday to Sunday: 10 h - 18 h) In partnership with the Louvre Museum, this new international calibre exhibition brings us to Rome through the expression of European paintings. The exhibition leads us in the footprints of the Grand Tour followers, ancestors of current tourists, who travelled in order to refine their education, but also artists, amateurs, and art collectors. The exhibition addresses the singularity of a city of contrast and pleasure: its different neighbourhoods, its palaces, galleries, the restless life of the population, and even gastronomy, all which add new colours to Art in Europe. A catalogue, as well as an edition of the Liege museum review summarises through text and images this ambitious exhibition which is suitable to intrigue all audiences. Address: La Boverie, Parc de la Boverie, BE 4020 Liège 10 11

The current gothic style edifice was rebuilt between the 13 th century and the start of the 15 th century. Certain additions, such as the tower, date to the 19th century. The spire of the tower houses a set of 49 bells which for the most part came from Notre Dame & Saint Lambert. Address: Place de la Cathédrale, 4000 Liège Le Grand Curtius (10 h 18 h) The Grand Curtius is located in an exceptional architectural ensemble of buildings from the 16 th to the 21 st centuries. 8 ATTRACTIONS and things to do Monuments The Prince-Bisshop s Palace First erected on St. Lambert Square 1000 years ago, the palace has been rebuilt twice. The second reconstruction, combing elements of Gothic and Italian Rennaissance, was only completed at the end of the 16 th century. The greater court is enclosed by 60 columns with richly ornated capitals, each with their own unique patterns; note the buffoons, grimacing masks or other typical Renaissance figures. Nowadays, the palace still houses parts of the provincial government as well as the City s courts of justice of the city of Liège. Address: Place Saint-Lambert 18, 4000 Liège Gare de Liège-Guillemins (Liège-Guillemins Railway Station) Most times a train station is just somewhere to pass through, without glancing at much more than the departure boards. Not the Liège- Guillemins, though, which has become a tourist attraction in its own right. Its futuristic design stops people in their tracks, so to speak, so if you miss your train or your train is delayed, you have a work of art to explore. The Belgian station is the idea of one man, Santiago Calatrava, who happens to be both engineer and architect (as well as a sculptor and painter). Address: 4000 Liège Monuments (continued) Pont de Fragnée (The Bridge of Fragnée) The Fragne Bridge was built for the World Exhibition of 1905, to the model of the Pont Alexandre III in Paris. On both sides of the bridge you can admire two gold-plated renommees (trumpet-playing angels). Address: Pont de Fragnée, 4020 Liège The Churches Religion built this town, and those with own interest will find plenty to see, especially in the Cathedral District. A walk through this area of the city takes about two hours, but allow much more time to investigate all the museums and their prized offerings. The first true prince-bishop, Notger ( ), built a cathedral, seven collegiate churches, 30 parish churches, a dozen convents, and the monasteries of St. Jacques and St. Laurent. Six of the seven original imposing collegiate churches are still standing
ATTRACTIONS and things to do Typical Areas Hors Château Those who take a walk through Liège will undoubtedly pass by the Hors Château. The beautiful buildings make any walk worthwhile, but it has still more to admire. On the side of the Montagne de Bueren you will find a number of picturesque alleys behind the mansions that are certainly worth a visit. For example, enter the Impasse de la Couronne or Impasse de l Ange. At the end of the passageways you will find a small square where time was stood still; the houses here used to be home to the less fortunate workers, and today it is a haven of peace in the city, where colorful flowers and green trees form the streets. You will also find a restaurant here - the ideal place to break into a break and enjoy a cup of coffee. Les Coteaux de la Citadelle (The hills of the Citadel) Take a walk through history along footpaths and old walls, within a stone s throw of the Saint Lambert Square, in the heart of the city of Liege... Liege, a town renowned for arts, which has though also charming hidden spots... Lying inside the town walls since the 13th century, the hill slope has always been part of the city. Spectacular monuments can be discovered, like the famous Montagne de Bueren stairs or the panoramic views from the Citadel boulevard. Walking on the hillsides can also be an opportunity to make unusual encounters and have new, more intimate experiences, like entering the city behind the scenes, beyond the curtain of aligned façades, or making one s way across a warren of courtyards, staircases, and alleys and reaching the broad daylight and quiet of the terraces or gazing from very nearby upon the outlines of the town roofs... A privileged place for any visitor in search of nature and quietness, in the very heart of the city! Marché de la Batte (Flea market; Sunday only) La Batte, the largest and oldest market in Belgium, takes place every Sunday in the heart of the city - a real institution in Liège. You will find fruit, vegetables, cheese, clothes, books, plants... and a friendly atmosphere
Food, Drinks and other gastronomy Food, Drinks and other gastronomy Gaufre de Liège (Liège waffles) It is close to impossible to visit Liège and not take note of the well-known street food favourite: the sugar waffles, or the Gaufre de Liège (waffle of Liège) a the natives say. The crispy exterior, combined with the inside of heavenly dough-ey fluff is truly a delicious treat, and as a surprise for when you bite into it, there are clumpy bits of sugar to give the waffle a tad more crunch. There are many food booths and vendors on the streets selling all kinds of tasty snacks, including the Liège waffle with a large variety of toppings like whipped cream, ice cream, chocolate sauce, strawberries and other fresh fruits, and many more. For the best waffles, many recommend the bakery une gaufrette Saperlipopette, a quaint and small shop at rue des Mineurs. Liège Chocolate chocolate shops in Liège Belgium is very well known over all for its chocolates, be it the soft pralines with their delicious variety of fillings, or the truffles with cocoa coverings, or even the easter egg chocolates. Liège has many chocolateries, and here s a list of the best of them: - Benoît Nihant - Passage Lemonier 30, 4000 Liège - Carre Noir - En Neuvice 29, 4000 Liège - Chocolat Mosan - Rue Charles Magnette 24, 4000 Liège - Chocolaterie Franz - Rue Saint-Gilles 24, 4000 Liège - Darcis - Rue du mouton blanc 22, 4000 Liège - Galler - Rue du Pot d Or 2, 4000 Liège - Flocolaterie - Rue Simon Radoux 19, 4000 Liège Liège Beer The best pubs and bars in Liège Belgium is well known for their beer and brewery, and Liège is no exception. In the city itself, brewing takes a firm second-place to consuming there are no breweries of distinction, open for the inspiration, and education, of the beer tourist. But what Liege lacks in breweries, it makes up for in brown cafés and beer-shops. - Brasserie C - Impasse des Ursulines 14-24, 4000 Liège - Beerlovers café & shop - Rue de la Violette 9, 4000 Liège - La Goutte d Or - Rue des Clarisses 6, 4000 Liège - Danish Taverne - Rue Pont d Avroy, 4000 Liège - Rive Gauche - Place des Carmes 1, 4000 Liège - Tchantchès et Nanesse - Rue Grande-Bêche 35, 4000 Liège - Huggy s Bar - Boulevard d Avroy 122, 4000 Liège 18 19
