2 Wonderful Wonderful Copenhagen! Tour celebrating the publication of Gareth Glover s new book Copenhagen is a young, vibrant, cosmopolitan city, but it also oozes with great history and culture and is always a delight to visit. The beautiful country of Denmark is steeped in romance and enchanting fairy tales, being the home country of Hans Christian Anderson. It also has a much darker history, portrayed by such as Hamlet and the German tales told by the Brothers Grimm. For Shakespeare lovers there s even a delicious Othello Cake! Forming the gateway to the Baltic, Copenhagen has been the scene of numerous great historical events over the centuries, but none more intriguing than the two visits by the British in 1801 and 1807, which remain controversial to this very day. On the second occasion in 1807, an army (which included General Arthur Wellesley, later to become famous as the Duke of Wellington) was landed on the island of Zealand and the city was heartlessly bombarded by shell and rockets, causing terrible death and destruction until forced to submit. The Danish navy, then the fifth largest in the world, was simply packed up and sailed to Britain, never to return. Most Danes today have a limited understanding of these events and the battle fought here by a British fleet under the ever-famous Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson in 1801 is often confused with the return of the British in 1807, with most Danes wrongly referring to Nelson as the Stealer of the Navy.

There is much to see today regarding these two events in Copenhagen, including the atmospheric Trekroner Fort, a short way out in the bay (a lovely boat trip), the stunning Citadel, the treasures of the Arsenal, the impressive defensive ramparts and the poignant Danish Military Cemetery amongst others. This city however also includes such gems as the stunning rooms of the Amalienborg Palace, the ancient Rosenborg Castle, the beautiful waterfront at Nyhavn, the famous Little Mermaid statue, the impressive Royal Christianborg Palace, the stunning city views from the top of the Rundetaarn, and the Bohemian Christianshavn District, all of which we will visit. Beyond the city we will also visit Hamlet s Kronborg Castle and Frederikswork Gunpowder Factory, the stunning Roskilde Abbey and not forgetting the nearby Viking Centre. Anyone fancy rowing a Viking Longboat? Denmark is also fun and energetic and there will certainly be time to sample the wonderful Danish pastries, the fine cuisine and perhaps a small glass of Schnapps or two!! 4 Our Battles 1800 Britain attempts to maintain its Naval superiority against France, but fails to force Denmark into an alliance Without good charts Admiral Horatio Nelson leads the attack on Copenhagen. Brave resistance from shore batteries and ships was eventually overcome by superior gunnery. Most captured ships were only fit to be burnt, and an armistice was quickly signed. Nelson becomes Viscount Nelson Danish neutrality was threatened by Napoleon, posing a threat to Britain s access to the Baltic. Sir Arthur Wellesley (the future Duke of Wellington) lands and overpowers Danish troops. Naval rockets set the City alight. The entire Danish fleet and naval stores are seized.

5 Viking Cool The Danes proud naval history started long before Nelson arrived. Yet Copenhagen now peacefully enjoys its Hygge, a calm way of life, visible in its people, its culture and its waterways. As we re exploring the days of sail on tour, its only right that we go back in time to visit the world renowned Viking Ship Museum. We ll see original ships and finds from wonderful archaeological discoveries, including the longest Viking warship ever discovered. The Museum facilities also include a working Viking ship building yard. Our stylish modern motor launch to Trekroner Fort. To date 14 Viking ships have been uncovered, work that has continued since the 1960s. The ships were deliberately sunk in mud around 1070 to block the passage of enemy ships and to protect Roskilde. We ll also take a private and stylish boat trip to visit Trekroner offshore fortress that played a significant role in Nelson s battle experience of 1801.

Gareth has published over 70 books and memoirs on the Napoleonic Wars and those who fought in it. His latest book The Two Battles of Copenhagen 1801 & 1807: Britain and Denmark in the Napoleonic Wars is due for publication late Gareth's career has ranged from a Commissioned Officer of the Royal Navy, to managing one of the country's finest food halls. The Island of Zealand is home to Hamlet s Castle and a very rare gunpowder factory, captured by British cavalry, and the site of Wellington s first European victory. We can also crew a Viking longboat at the nearby Viking Centre! Copenhagen is a sheer delight and really should not be missed.

11 Fitness Guide Modest The Danish island of Zealand is relatively flat and the City of Copenhagen quite compact, but our tour will still require the ability both to stand and walk three to four miles each day. Sensible walking shoes are therefore recommended to cope with the walking, standing, boat transfers, cobbled streets and some gentle hills. Heels are not recommended because of the cobbles. Our boat visit to offshore Trekroner is only a short way from Copenhagen harbour. If you re not sure how you ll fare we carry sea-sickness tablets that tend to settle most stomachs!
