4 IPICS guided visit of Leuven Monday, July 4-19:00 - Included in the price - 18:30-20:30 - Meeting point: Leuven train station - After the guided tour, we will show you some of the best bars in Leuven Town Hall (Grote Markt 9, Leuven) Leuven's Town Hall is one of the best-known Gothic town halls worldwide and Leuven's pride and joy. It took three architects and thirty years to build it. Leuven's 'Hall of Fame' features 236 statues, which were only added to the façade after There are 220 men and 16 women in total. On the bottom floor are famous Leuven scientists, artists and historical figures, dressed in Burgundian garb. The first floor is reserved for the patron saints of the various parishes of Leuven. Above them the façade is adorned by the counts and dukes of Brabant while the towers primarily feature biblical figures. These days the town hall merely has a ceremonial function after the city's administrative services moved in The tourist information centre is situated on the side of the Town Hall.

8 IPICS visit of Bruges Saturday, July 9-08:30 - Not included in the price: please not that participants have to buy their own train tickets on the day of the trip (+- 12 euros if you are younger than 26) - 08:30 - Meeting point: Leuven train station - You will be able to explore Bruges on your own, there will be no guided tour - See the map at the back of this booklet Minnewaterpark (Begijnhof 6-20) In the south part of Bruges, surrounded by trees and the adjacent Minnewaterpark, you ll find a small rectangular lake called 'Minnewater' or Lake of Love. The tragic romance of Minna and her warrior love Stromberg has evolved into local legend saying that you will experience eternal love if you walk over the lake bridge with your partner.this of course turns Lake of Love into an exceptionally romantic spot. Enjoy the scenery from the lake bridge, one of the benches along the lake or stroll through the calm Minnewaterpark. Begijnhof Ten Wijngaerde (Begijnhof 3-7, Brugge) The Princely Béguinage Ten Wijngaerde is the only preserved béguinage in the Belgian city of Bruges. There are no more Beguines living there, but since 1927 it functions as a convent for Benedictines, founded by canon Hoornaert. In the same year the houses at the west side were also reshaped and enlarged into the Monasterium De Wijngaard, a priory of Benedictine nuns. Sint Salvatorskathedraal (Steenstraat, Brugge) The Sint-Salvator Cathedral, the main church of the city, is one of the few buildings in Bruges that have survived the onslaught of the ages without damage. Nevertheless, it has undergone some changes and renovations. This church was not originally built to be a cathedral; it was granted the status in the 19th century. Since the 10th century the Sint-Salvator was a common parish church. At that time the Sint-Donaaskathedraal (St. Donatian's Cathedral), which was located at the very heart of Bruges, opposite of the town hall, was the central religious building of the city. At the end of the 18th century the French occupiers of Bruges threw out the bishop of Bruges and destroyed the Sint-Donaaskathedraal, which was his residence.

9 Belfort (Markt 7, Brugge) The most important of Bruges towers stands 83 metres tall. It houses, amongst other things, a carillon with 47 melodious bells. In the reception area, waiting visitors can discover all kinds of interesting information about the history and working of this unique world-heritage protected belfry. Those who take on the challenge of climbing the tower can pause for a breather on the way up in the old treasury, where the city s charters, seal and public funds were kept during the Middle Ages, and also at the level of the impressive clock or in the carillonneur s chamber. Finally, after a tiring 366 steps, your efforts will be rewarded with a breath-taking and unforgettable panoramic view of Bruges and her surroundings. History The belfry forms part of a 13th century complex of halls, which served as a warehouse and a market hall in the Middle Ages. This impressive building is 83 metres tall and is composed of two connected square brick sections from the 13th century, surmounted by an octagonal lantern tower made of sand-lime brick ( ). Until 1741, a 19-metre high wooden spire crowned the tower. Belfries have symbolic meaning and bear witness to the confidence that cities felt during the late Middle Ages. Besides this they belong to the oldest examples of medieval, civilian, and public architecture. They have been recognised as UNESCO World Heritage sites since The belfry tower is over 83 metres tall. Climb the 366 steps to the top and discover on the way a treasury, an impressive clockwork mechanism, and a carillon with 47 bells. Your achievement will be rewarded with a breathtaking view of Bruges and the surrounding countryside. Collection Highlights are the wrought iron gates from 1300, the Triumphant Bell by bell caster Melchior de Haze, the carillon drum dating from 1748, the tower s clockwork mechanism, and the carillon s 47 bells. From the tower room you can see the carillonist s keyboard. Museum The main reason to climb the 366 steps is for the panoramic view from the top. On the way up you pass the former treasury of the belfry where the City archives were kept in the Middle Ages. On the stenen vloer (stone floor) you can learn more about the bells and the carillon. Higher still you will find yourself at eye level with the Triumphant Bell and the clockwork mechanism. Rozenhoedkaai (Rozenhoedkaai, Brugge) Summer or winter, morning or evening, sun or rain Rozenhoedkaai has the enthralling ability to always make a stunning impression.it should come as no surprise that this continuous to be one the most photographed spots in Bruges. Here anyone can create his or her picture perfect postcard of Bruges. Rozenhoedkaai s sophisticated class makes it the ideal location to pause for a moment and together with your loved one enjoy one of Bruges most timeless sceneries.

10 Heilig-Bloedbasiliek (Burg, Brugge) The double church, dedicated to Our Lady and Saint Basil in the 12th century and a basilica since 1923, consists of a lower church that has maintained its Romanesque character and a neo-gothic upper church, in which the relic of the Holy Blood is preserved. The renovated treasury, with numerous valuable works of art, is also worth a visit. Town Hall (Burg, Brugge) Bruges City Hall (1376) is one of the oldest in the Low Countries. It is from here that the city has been governed for more than 600 years. An absolute masterpiece is the Gothic Hall, with its late 19th-century murals and polychrome vault. The adjoining historic hall calls up the city council s history with a number of authentic documents and works of art. A multimedia exhibition on the ground floor illustrates the evolution of the Burg Square. Jan Van Eyckplein (Jan Van Eyckplein, Brugge) Standing in the middle of the square the renowned Bruges painter Jan van Eyck ( ) proudly overlooks the domain that wears his name.still, he has to share the limelight with the square s alluring style for once this was the old harbor of Bruges where ships loaded and unloaded. Even though fierce traders and rich poorters (citizens with city rights) no longer populate the square, it still holds a captivating appeal. While you re discovering Jan van Eyck square The little bear of Bruges approvingly looks over your shoulder. Stroll around, admire the pretty facades of the Old Tollhouse, Pijndershuis and Burgher s Lodge or simply take pleasure in a short break along the canal. Jan van Eyck square is furthermore an ideal gateway to explore the tranquil St.-Anne quarter with its working-class neighbourhoods.

11 IPICS brewery visit Wednesday, July 13-18:15 - Included in the price - 18:15-21:00 - Meeting point: Leuven train station Stella Artois A Rich Brewing Heritage At Stella Artois, we are extremely proud of our Belgian roots. Our story can be seen on every bottle of Stella Artois. If you look closely, hints of our origins are proudly displayed. By 1366 roots of our brewing tradition had been established in the city of Leuven, Belgium which is also where the original Den Hoorn brewery was founded. Den Hoorn laid the foundation for the quality taste and standard Stella Artois is known for. The symbol of the Den Hoorn Brewery is proudly displayed in Stella Artois' cartouche to this day. Sebastian Artois was admitted to the Leuven Brewer s Guild as a Brew Master in 1708, and only nine years later purchased the Den Hoorn brewery. In memoriam, you can find his last name on the brewery and every bottle of Stella Artois around the world. The Artois Brewery was so beloved internationally and locally, a special batch was created as a Christmas gift to the people of Leuven. That special batch was the first to officially include "Stella" in its name. "Stella", meaning star in Latin, pays homage to this original occasion, accompanied by a star on every bottle. So next time you see a bottle of Stella Artois, take note of the rich history paired with the rich flavor on and in every bottle.
