2 HIGHLIGHTS THE WINDMILL Dutch Icon. Only about 1000 traditional windmills remain. 397 of them are drainage mills. 3 20, Fri Depart With bags packed, it s time to head to the airport where you check in for the overnight flight to Amsterdam. 21, Sat 1 Arrive 2 Oosterbeek 3 Arnhem 4 Doesburg Welcome to the Netherlands! After passport control and baggage claim, board the waiting motorcoaches. The morning program will be announced later. After time for an independent lunch, travel to Oosterbeek to visit the Allied Military Cemetery and the Airborne Museum. Next, drive to Arnhem where you board the M.P.S. Salvinia. After time to settle in, enjoy a welcome aboard dinner while you cruise to medieval Doesburg, the overnight stop. If you are not too tired, take a guided evening walk through this interesting town. 22, Sun 5 Zutphen 6 Kampen Cruise through Gelderland this morning. After breakfast, stop in Zutphen to attend the optional morning worship service at the 13th-century St. Walburgskerk. You might not understand the Dutch sermon but you ll certainly enjoy hearing the church s wonderful Bader organ. In the afternoon, cruise to Kampen. Kampen had a very prosperous herring trade in the Middle Ages. After dinner, you are invited to a private organ concert in the 14thcentury Gothic Boven Kerk. Following the concert, join your guide for a short walking tour. 23, Mon 7 Den Helder 8 Schagerbrug Today cruise via the Ijsselmmer to the Enclosure Dyke. After transiting the locks into the Wadden Sea, continue to Den Helder. After a brief stop in Den Helder to pick up excursion passengers, cruise past many flower fields with tulip and hyacinth in full bloom. The overnight tie-up is near Schagenbrug, amidst the colorful flower fields. 24, Tue 9 Alkmaar 10 Amsterdam This morning, continue southward on the picturesque North Holland Canal. Enjoy views of the flower fields on both sides of our ship. Be sure to have your cameras ready. Once in Alkmaar, our guided walking tour through this historic city will include views of the Cheese Museum and Sint-Laurenskerk. Mid-afternoon we cruise past interesting towns, villages, and windmills toward Zaandam and from there to Amsterdam, our home for two nights. 25, Wed 10 Amsterdam, Keukenhof 11 Haarlem Start the day with a cruise through the narrow canals and under the many bridges of Amsterdam. Then the day is free to join the Keukenhof Shore excursion or to spend sightseeing in Amsterdam. Go to one of the city s world famous art museums, the Anne Frank House, the floating flower market and/or sit and enjoy a coffee along one of the canals. There will be an onboard musical hour after dinner tonight. 26, Thu 12 Utrecht 13 Dordrecht After breakfast, say goodbye to Amsterdam and cruise south. After lunch and a quick stop in Utrect to let the excursion passengers off, you ll arrive in Dordrecht. This evening the Dutch will already start celebrating the Koningsdag Holiday, which is scheduled for April 27. This date marks the birthday of King Willem-Alexander. The holiday is known for its nationwide vrijmarket (free market), where the Dutch sell their used items. It is also a time for orange madness, since many people will be dressed in the color of the Royal House of Orange. The festivities start on board this evening with the Captain s Dinner. 27, Fri Dordrecht 14 Kinderdijk 15 Rotterdam Take a walking tour this morning of Dordrecht; it s sure to be busy as the town celebrates King s Day. Midday we leave the city for Kinderdijk, the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here see a short film in the Wisboom pump station before visiting some windmills. Midafternoon sail into Rotterdam, one of the largest harbor cities in the world. See its interesting architecture, bridges and some of its harbors. On our harbor cruise, our captain will take us past the former headquarters of the Holland America Line. It was from here that many immigrants boarded their ships for the crossing to the New World. 28, Sat Return All too soon, it s time to head for home! After saying tot ziens (good-bye) to the captain and crew of the Salvinia, take a bus to Schiphol Airport for our transatlantic flight back to the USA. 4 April 23 Optional Shore Excursions Dutch Heritage: Clothing & Landscapes Venture into the Dutch provinces of Overijssel and Friesland. In Staphorst, you may see some inhabitants wearing traditional clothing and wooden shoes. At the Staphorst Farm Museum, a local woman will explain her traditional costumes. Then visit Giethoorn, a village where most homes are built on their own island. Here, take a punter boat ride through the town. Afterward, travel to Sneek for a walking tour and a view of the Water Gate, before driving across the Enclosure Dike to meet the ship. (L) April 25 Dutch Flowers: Tulips in Keukenhof Following the canal cruise in Amsterdam, you re off to the Keukenhof Tulip Gardens. This national flower exhibition displays the many varieties of tulips along with many other flowers. A picnic lunch will be served before continuing to Haarlem. Since the 1630 s Haarlem has been a major tulip trading center, but it s the famed Grote Kerk or Sint- Bavokerk you will especially want to see. In Haarlem, there is time for shopping and independent sightseeing. (L) April 26 Dutch Royalty: Holland in Medieval Times This afternoon s excursion will take you to Kasteel Ammersoyen. This 14th-century castle is one of the most beautiful and best preserved medieval castles in the Netherlands. After a guided tour of the castle you visit Heusden, a picturesque medieval village. Heusden is built in the bastion style, where the fort is star-shaped to allow for archers and cannons to aim anywhere on the outlying battlefield. THE SHIP The MPS Salvinia is truly a one-of-a-kind floating hotel. As one of the smaller river cruisers, the Salvinia is ideal for sailing through waterways not accessible by larger ships. With accommodations for 123 passengers, all in riverview staterooms, this ship offers a comfortable atmosphere. CABINS Passenger cabins are located on the Main and Promendade Decks. All double cabins are furnished with two single beds, one of which converts to a sofa during the day. Rooms are also equipped with private facilities, a safe, flat-screen TV, and individually controlled air-conditioning. Promenade Deck cabin windows are larger than those on the Main Deck. The rooms are comparable in size. All windows open to let fresh air into the cabins. DECKS The public areas are divided among the ship s three decks. The Observation Deck offers a lounge that opens onto the Sun Deck. The restaurant and lobby are on the Promenade Deck and the whirlpool and sauna can be found on the Main Deck. The decks are connected by an elevator and stairs. MEALS Food onboard the ship highlights the traditional Dutch menu. First, early risers can sip fresh brewed coffee in the lounge before breakfast. Breakfast and lunch are buffet-style meals, featuring fresh breads, cheeses, eggs, and meats. Each day you can savor something new. Both options are full of charm, culture, and a nice balance of activities and free time. 1, Tue Normandy Beaches, Caen After breakfast, head off to visit the Normandy Beaches. The first stop is in St. Mere Eglise, the first French town liberated in WWII. It was near here that the U.S. 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions were air-dropped to protect Utah Beach during the D-Day invasion. The second stop is at Utah Beach. The last stop is to the American Military Cemetery near St. Laurent-sur-Mer. After this visit, return to Cean where the remainder of the afternoon is free. (B, L) EXTENSION #2 GERMANY & SWITZERLAND EXTENSION #1 BELGIUM & FRANCE 28, Sat Brugge Depart the Salvinia and board a bus for the morning drive to Brugge, Belgium. Brugge is built on a system of canals and is considered one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe. Enjoy free time this afternoon before an early evening check-in at the hotel and then dinner. (B, D) 29, Sun Brugge The morning is at leisure. Attend a church service, browse in one of the city s museums, or take a boat trip through the canals. After lunch, gather for a guided tour of the city. Walk through Market Square, past the Town Hall and the massive 13th-century belfry to the Onze-Lieve Vrouwekerk to see the only piece of Michelangelo s work to have permanently left Italy: Madonna and Child. The tour will end at the Begijnhof. (B, D) 30, Mon Amiens, Caen Leaving Belgium, continue to France. In the late morning, stop in Amiens, famous for its UNESCO World Heritage 13th-century Gothic Cathedral. While here be sure to grab some lunch, stroll the streets and see the cathedral. Back on the road, continue into Normandy and on to Caen. (B, D) 2, Wed Versailles Palace, Paris The morning drive is to Chateau de Versailles. As a symbol of the French monarchy during its peak, the famed castle was established in the early 17th century as a royal hunting lodge. After a visit to this royal residence, you head into Paris with a stop at Trocadero Gardens for a great view of the Eiffel Tower. Dinner will be at a nearby restaurant followed by an evening Seine River cruise before heading to the hotel. (B, D) 3, Thu Paris This morning take a sightseeing tour of Paris with views of the Arc de Triomphe, Place de la Concorde, La Madaline, the Opera, Palace Vendome and more. You will also visit Notre Dame Cathedral with its three immense rose windows. Afterward there is free time to shop, rest along the banks of the Seine, or enjoy a drink at a sidewalk café. This evening, gather for a farewell dinner before retiring to the hotel. (B, D) 4, Fri Return Bright and early you head to the airport for your return flight. We hope you have had the perfect spring vacation! (B) 28, Sat Cologne, Mannheim Depart the Salvinia and board a bus for a drive across the Netherlands and into Germany. A midday stop in Cologne gives you an opportunity to visit the Dom. This colossal twin-spired cathedral contains relics said to be of the Three Magi. Continue along parts of the Rhine Gorge for panoramas of quaint villages, vineyard-clad hills, and castle ruins. Then continue to Mannheim for hotel check-in and dinner. (B, D) 29, Sun Heidelberg, Black Forest, Breitnau This morning visit Heidelberg, a storybook city on the banks of the Neckar River. Tour the beautiful Heidelberg Castle and walk through the old city center to see the Knight s House, the Students Jail, the old bridge and the Church of the Holy Spirit the Heiliggeistkirche. In the afternoon, travel south to Breitnau, a town nestled in the Black Forest. (B, D) 30, Mon Rhine Falls, Berne, Aeschi Today travel into Switzerland, known the world over for its spectacular scenery and its delicious cheese and chocolate. Our first stop will be to see the mighty Rhine Falls, the most powerful waterfalls in Europe. Then it s off to the medieval city of Berne, capital of the Swiss Federation. In the late afternoon, we ll continue to Aeschi where we ll be headquartered for the next three nights. (B, D) 1, Tue Lauterbrunnental, Mürren, Aeschi See the classic U-shaped glacial valley of Lauterbrunnental, board a cable car up to Grütschalp and then continue by train to Mürren, a village completely cut off from car traffic. Heading back down the mountain, you meet the motorcoach for the drive to Trummelbach Falls, Europe s largest subterranean waterfalls. Dinner is at the hotel. (B, D) 2, Wed Grindelwald, Interlaken, Aeschi Drive the ascent to Grindelwald, a town in the Jungfrau area. Here you have the option of making the climb via rack-railway to the Jungfraujoch, the highest mountain resort in Europe (11,401 feet). Those who prefer to stay closer to sea level will have a great time exploring Grindelwald. Then visit Interlaken before heading back to Aeschi for dinner. (B, D) 3, Thu Lucerne, Zurich Our morning drive takes us to Lake Lucerne and the city of the same name. Here, enjoy a walking tour to see the historic Lion Monument, the Wooden Chapel Bridge, the Jesuit Church, and the old city center. Spend your free time cruising on the lake or shopping for a Swiss watch. Late afternoon, we ll continue to our hotel located near the Zurich Airport. After check-in, gather for a farewell dinner.
