2 NormaNDY 2016 JUST OVER SEVENTY YEARS AGO, ALLIED forces altered the course of history on the beaches of Normandy. We invite you to join us as we immerse ourselves in this critical history, and sail the waters that brought over 125,000 soldiers to these coasts. Each day Sea Cloud II brings us to a different port along the coast of Normandy and the southern coast of England where we have access to great golf and private tours to visit scenic sites and historic landmarks along our route. Each evening, we have engaged discussions about the strategies that unfolded in June A highlight of our tour will be the opportunity to visit the American Cemetery on June 6 th. This will be a day to remember. Our journey begins just outside Paris, where we spend a couple of days exploring and playing golf in Chantilly before we board Sea Cloud II in Honfleur and tour the coast of Normandy. Privately chartered for our journey, Sea Cloud II affords easy access to many important sites along the Normandy beaches. We gain a unique perspective on the different landing sectors for the invasion, as Dr. Kevin Weddle helps us relive the heroic moments that took place along this coastline. With challenging private golf courses in close proximity to each port, like Ferndown, Goodwood and Royal St. George s, we visit charming seaports along the south English coast. Our route takes us to Dover, Portsmouth and Southampton, where we will learn about the planning stage of the invasion, before sailing back to France. ENGLAND Dover Southampton Portsmouth COLONEL (RET.) KEVIN J. WEDDLE, PH.D., the host of our journey, is Professor of Military Theory and Strategy at the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. A West Point graduate and veteran of Operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm and Enduring Freedom, Dr. Weddle has led dozens of battlefield tours for high level civilian and military groups. In addition to being an accomplished lecturer and tour leader, he is also a notable author having been awarded the William E. Coby award and numerous faculty writing awards at the Army War College. Dr. Weddle will offer insightful commentary as we journey these coasts, and his telling of the events of 1944 as we approach Normandy will enrich our perspective of those crucial days that shaped the course of our world. 3 may 31/JuNe 1: Home Paris, france depart home on may 31 for an overnight flight to Paris, france. upon arrival in Paris, you will be transferred to Chantilly and the charming relais & Châteaux property, auberge du Jeu de Paume, where you can settle in and relax until our welcome reception this evening. JuNe 2: CHaNTilly, france Golf de Chantilly GolF: GolF de CHaNTIllY set in the midst of a centuries-old forest, Chantilly is a classic golf course, consistently ranked among the top five in france. tom simpson designed this strategic layout where you need to avoid challenging bunkers off the tee, but low scores are earned on these impressive greens. TouR: CHÂTEau de CHaNTIllY today, touring passengers will immerse themselves in one of the finest châteaus in all of france. from the gardens to the stables, to the Château itself, it is a breathtaking experience. the Condé museum within the Château holds over 800 masterpieces of french, italian, flemish and english art. JuNe 3: CHaNTilly, france GolF: GolF d'apremont Just a ten-minute ride from our hotel sits this private parkland gem. apremont turns calmly through french farmlands, and the subtle bunkering, gently rolling fairways and limited water hazards make for a wide-open and enjoyable round. TouR: day TRIP To PaRIS we will board a train for a 30-minute ride into Paris for the day, with several touring options from which you may choose. whether touring the amazing museums and historic sites, shopping or simply relaxing in a café, Paris offers something for everyone. JuNe 4: CHaNTilly HoNfleur, france embark Sea Cloud II our route to board Sea Cloud II allows us to visit the quaint village of giverny where we tour monet s garden, with the famous Japanese bridge, water lily pond and sites that inspired the master of impressionism. we enjoy lunch at scenic le moulin de fourges before boarding Sea Cloud II in honfleur. 4 JuNe 5: CHerBourG CaeN, france we make our way down the coast today as our historians relate the stories of these fateful days in we tour many notable locations including utah beach and st. mère Église, site of one of the largest allied paratrooper landings. in the afternoon, we spend time at the longues-sur-mer battery and arromanches museum, concluding our day with a visit to the Caen Peace memorial. JuNe 6: NormaNdy, france we begin the morning early on omaha beach, reflecting on the brave actions taken by allied forces seventy-two years ago. from the beaches, we venture to the famous cliffs at Pointe du hoc. the day is highlighted by a visit to the american Cemetery, where we have time to walk among the 9,387 marble gravestones that mark the final resting place of heroes who changed the course of world history. our tour concludes with a visit to Pegasus bridge, a critical crossing taken by the allies on June 5, 1944, which blocked the germans from providing reinforcements to Normandy. JuNe 7: day at sea what better way to enjoy our host vessel than a full day at sea aboard Sea Cloud II. sit back, watch skilled deckhands scale the rigging and set the sails, and enjoy the serenity of a tall ship gliding under full sail. later this afternoon, we gather on the lido deck for a discussion of the challenges faced by allied forces as they established a beachhead and fought their way toward Paris. 5 The Royal St. George's Golf Club JuNe 8: dover, england GolF: THe RoYal ST. GeoRGe S GolF CluB ranked among the top courses in the united Kingdom and the world, royal st. george s has hosted 14 open Championships. this seaside links course, overlooking the North sea, is a wonderful test of golf. TouR: CaNTeRBuRY Parts of this city have been designated unesco world heritage sites, and it is most well-known for its medieval abbeys and as the current seat of the Church of england. we will enjoy a private tour of Canterbury Cathedral and lunch in this ancient setting, leaving plenty of time to explore this charming town on your own. JuNe 9: PorTsmouTH, england GolF: GoodWood GolF CluB downs CouRSe originally laid out in 1914 by legendary Carnoustie designer James braid, the downs course is set within the goodwood estate, in the rolling hills of sussex downs. the course is an exhilarating mix of play through rolling hardwood forest and open holes with fantastic views of the english Channel. TouR: MaRY RoSe MuSeuM & SouTHWICK HouSe the Mary Rose, a warship built by henry viii, served in the first three french wars and went down in 1545 in Portsmouth harbor. raised in 1982, the Mary Rose now resides within the recently opened mary rose museum, which holds magnificent artifacts showing us how the tudors lived. after lunch, we will take a short ride to southwick house, the 1944 headquarters of the main allied commanders. it was from here that the Normandy invasion was planned, and large maps marking positions of forces at the moment the first landing commenced, remain in place. 6 Bordeaux, France JuNe 10: southampton, england GolF: FeRNdoWN GolF CluB founded in 1912 and designed by harold hilton, ferndown golf Club is set in the wonderfully manicured countryside southwest of southampton. the old Course at ferndown plays across a sandy outcrop of land where there is a proliferation of heather and pines, and the challenge at ferndown is not length, it is position. highlighted by multiple dogleg holes, it is an immaculately groomed and visually appealing course with subtle hazards and especially well-designed and positioned bunkers. overwhelmingly, ferndown has received rave reviews from Kalos golfers, and it serves as an ideal closing round on our journey. TouR: MoTTISFoNT abbey touring passengers visit mottisfont abbey, a medievel priory with a still visible 13 th century cellarium. the abbey was turned into a luxurious country house in 1935 and played social host to artists and writers of the time, including ian fleming. our private tour will include visits to the main state rooms, art gallery, manicured gardens and grounds, where our guides will share their intimate knowledge and anecdotes regarding the unique history of the abbey, its artwork and past residents. JuNe 11: Paris, france Home we bid farewell to the captain and crew of Sea Cloud II and transfer to Paris for flights home or join us as we continue on to bordeaux for a golf and wine extension tour.
