3 Press release Oasis of the Seas: Thermopal fits out the world s biggest cruise ship Leutkirch/Fort Lauderdale, 27 November 2009 It s not only the biggest and most revolutionary cruise ship in the world, but with seven main themed areas it is probably also the most spectacular. The naming ceremony for Royal Caribbean International s Oasis of the Seas a ship of superlatives takes place on monday at her home port of Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale (USA). With 18 decks and measuring 360 m in length, there is plenty of room for the crew of 2296 and 5,800 guests. Passengers dine in the main restaurant, the three-story Opus Dining Room, surrounded by high quality Thermopal products. More than 3000 guests can dine here at the same time and feel as if they were in a tiny French inn. In a modern and contemporary way the architects RTKL Associates, Miami (USA), have designed a restaurant inspired from the Grand Dining Rooms of transatlantic ocean liners of the Art Deco era, such as the legendary SS Normandie - arranging corners, niches and partitions so cleverly that the areas are only partly exposed. The work was carried out by the Italian Tino Sana, who opted for high pressure wood-effect laminates by Thermopal: Noce Padia (F26/025) and Macassar brown (F23/001), both warm well-being shades, set the tone in the elegant ambience. We chose Thermopal because of the life like renditions of exotic woods and other wood species. Oasis of the Seas was built at a cost of some 950 million at the Aker shipyard in Turku in Finland. It took six years to complete the giga liner weighing 225,282 gross registered tons and with seven main themed areas. The dimensions are simply staggering: for instance, covering an area of two football fields in the middle of the ship is Central Park with real trees measuring up to eight metres in height. At the rear is the Aqua Theater with the biggest freshwater swimming pool ever seen on a ship and where guests can to learn to dive. In the evenings, the amphitheatre is transformed into a vast stage. 7 The ship designer s first choice: Thermopal shapes the design of the Norwegian Epic Press release Leutkirch, 27 September 2010 It truly is an international ship. Built in France and based in Miami (USA), the Norwegian Epic set sail on its first major voyage to the Caribbean beginning of July. The interior of this unique entertainment ship was designed by the Swedish offices of Tillberg Design, with whom Thermopal has had a close cooperation for many years. They fitted out the 2100 passenger cabins of the Norwegian Epic with high quality highpressure laminates from Leutkirch. The quality and variety of cores, surfaces and designs that Thermopal has to offer are simply unbeatable, says project manager Anders Lund-Rasmussen. Our experiences have been excellent, and we now have premium products from Leutkirch on almost all our ships. Despite, or perhaps because of that, we have never had any complaints. And it s no coincidence that the team at Thermopal is pleased to offer architects, planners and interior designers the best advice when choosing a product, adds project consultant Guido Alrich, who is responsible for the ship construction division. In the case of the Norwegian Epic, Tillberg Design opted for an exclusive olive tree design that was specially adapted for this project. It was then combined with Malaga beige and used to fit out all 2100 cabins. As Thermopal gives them the freedom to combine any design with any surface and any core technology, the architects chose the high-gloss surface.
