Written on Hotel Gotham stationery and dated June 14th. The second part of the lot is the reply from Ms Fielder to Ms Francatelli also known as Frankie. She mentioned that they have since been in touch with Selznick International Pictures Inc. (Hollywood motion picture studios) who are keen to make a picture of the Titanic disaster as soon as possible. She also mentioned that they were most interested in having a Titanic survivor onboard, and in particular, to be associated with Lady Duff Gordon. She added that her role would be technical advisor, and to help with information relating to the story. She went on to say that they would offer a good price for her assistance and that no doubt Selznick International Pictures would be in touch, once everything had been confirmed. A fascinating pair of letters that relate to preliminary negotiations to what would have been the first major movie on Titanic. Lot: 284 **R.M.S. TITANIC - HELEN CHURCHILL CANDEE ORIGINAL BOOK: Helen Churchill Candee (nee Hungeford) was a New York native who boarded Titanic in Cherbourg as a First Class passenger. She was rescued in Lifeboat 6 and is featured in Walter Lord's true-to-life acclaimed novel "A Night to Remember". Candee was an author herself and her biggest selling book, "The Tapestry Book", was originally published in 1912, the same year she travelled on Titanic. In fact, she had been travelling in Europe to complete research for this book when she learned of her son's automobile accident and decided to return to America. Offered here is an original early copy of "The Tapestry Book" published 1913 by Constable & Company Ltd., London, 275 pages. A special issue Sears fashion catalogue of Lady Duff-Gordon designs, Fall & Winter , Chicago and New York, Copyright 1916 Sears, Roebuck and Co., Chicago. Forty-eight pages with doubleflapped tan covers and fine string binding. The cover features a full- length affixed classy photograph of Lady Duff-Gordon (by Ira L. Hill, New York), her printed full signature and an original embossed seal. The interior consists of an address by Ms. Duff- Gordon, an article by her entitled, "How I Think American Women Should Dress," a fashion biography including an 13 of 22
15 introduction to the catalogue and a photo of Duff-Gordon at work in her studio. The catalogue contains beautifully displayed fashions shown both in illustration and on human models. Each outfit is accompanied by a description and a printed signature of Duff-Gordon. It is obvious that some effort and expense was made in producing this catalogue, and this example is in exceptional condition. Some of the illustrations and printing in the interior are in green ink while the majority of the text is in dark brown ink. The prices, of course, are 1916 vintage with an "Afternoon frock of charmeuse and crepe Georgette" entitled "My Promise" listed for $27.50 (USD). Each of the fashions is identified by a special title and, interestingly, each human model is credited by a "model No." The last page of the catalogue consists of ordering instructions. The original order form with two addressed mailing envelopes, as well as a full length portrait of Duff-Gordon containing her printed signature are still present as inserts to the catalogue. Sears, Roebuck and Co. (Sears) is an American chain of department stores founded in the late 19th century by Richard Walton Sears and Alvah Curtis Roebuck on the premise of customer satisfaction. The renowned Sears satisfaction-or-your-money-back guarantee appears next to each offering in this catalogue and continues to be the company's policy to this day. Lady Duff- Gordon produced an economical line of fashions for Sears spanning two catalogues, including this one. Scarce in this condition and with the inserts. Lady Duff-Gordon, her husband, Sir Cosmo, and her maid boarded the Titanic at Cherbourg. By then, Lucile was already an established fashion designer. The Duff-Gordons and their maid were rescued in lifeboat 1 which carried only 12 people despite having a capacity for 40. Their rescue was not without controversy. Cosmo Duff-Gordon had promised the crew members of their lifeboat 5 each to cover the cost of their lost possessions. The gesture was later viewed as an incentive for the crew not to return to pick up additional survivors. The Duff-Gordons denied this but their lifeboat was nevertheless dubbed "The Money Boat". Lady Duff-Gordon passed away in London in April ins. x 13ins. Lot: 292 **R.M.S. TITANIC - STUNNING VINTAGE PRINT OF JESSE STRAUS:A strikingly vivid original vintage colour print of Jesse Straus, eldest son of First Class Titanic victims Isidor and Ida Straus, by artist E.H. Baker, circa On June 8th 1913 in the presence of more than 5000 people in the restaurant of the R.H. Macy Company on Herald Square, Jesse Straus accepted the presentation of a memorial plaque dedicated to his parents by the employees of Macy's. Isidor had been a co-owner of the store. Since his father's death, Jesse and other members of the family had become more active in the business. Until recently, the plaque was on display in the arcade of the store's 34th Street entrance. The plaque reads, in part: "Their lives were beautiful and their deaths glorious". On accepting the plaque, Jesse said, in part: "Your thoughts to erect a tablet at the entrance of the workshop in which our father spent so much of his life, and for which he had such a strong attachment, is as unusual as it is expressive of your loving sympathy, and words fail me to express our appreciation and gratitude". Although he was politically active and held several official posts, Jesse Straus's legacy seems concealed in obscurity. He died at his home in New York in Interestingly, Jesse was a memorabilia collector. His collection of ephemera is housed at Vassar College in America. The plaque was returned by Macy's to his family. Lot: 293 R.M.S. TITANIC: An original glossy photograph of Mrs. William Howard Taft, widow of the late U.S. President and Chief Justice, as she unveiled the memorial often referred to as the Women's Titanic Memorial (so named because a committee of women secured its funding), in Potomac Park, Washington, D.C. on 26th May President and Mrs. Hoover were also in attendance. The image captures the instant where Mrs. Taft pulled on the rope which dropped the veil, as an Air Corps Sergeant looks on. The photo is in excellent condition and bears the imprint of Harris & Ewing on front and back. 7ins. x 10ins. Lot: 294 R.M.S. TITANIC: Photograph of the memorial plaque to Captain E.J. As an adult he and his family resided in Lima, Peru where he represented a London business firm, often travelling to London for business. He was returning from a business trip to Lima on Titanic via New York, occupying stateroom E-17. Henry Aldridge & Son previously sold First Class bedroom steward Edmund Stone's master stateroom key for E-deck cabins E-1 to E-42, which included Daly's cabin E-17 as Stone would have been his steward. Daly was rescued, apparently in a collapsible lifeboat, but details surrounding his rescue are somewhat sketchy. This is an opportunity to acquire an original photograph of one of Titanic's more elusive passengers. 2ins. x 4ins. Lot: 296 R.M.S. TITANIC - ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH OF ASTOR STEAM YACHT NOMA EN ROUTE TO MEET CARPATHIA: The steam yacht Noma was built in 1902 by the Burlee Dry Dock Company in New York. It was later acquired by John Jacob Astor's son Vincent. It was reported in the "New York Times" on 2nd September 1911, that J. J. Astor and his brideto-be, Madeleine Force, and her family, had sailed on the Noma up the Hudson River in New York towards the Astor family home in preparation of their forthcoming marriage. This lot consists of a photograph, 5ins. x 7ins. with white border, of the Noma at sea on April 18th The yacht was carrying William V. Astor, son of J. J. Astor, whose intention was to meet the Carpathia upon her arrival in Ambrose Channel so that he could take off his step-mother (Madeleine Astor) whom he had known to be onboard. There does not appear to be a record of the transfer having actually occurred. Given the need for a passenger to be cleared through immigration and the unlikeliness of the Carpathia stopping to disembark a 14 of 22
