5 SCENIC CRUISING IN GATUN LAKE Every transit through the Panama Canal locks includes scenic cruising through the wild and wonderful Gatun Lake, once the world s largest man-made lake, dotted with small islands and lush vegetation. It took 4.5 million cubic yards of concrete to make the locks and dams of the canal, and more than 60 million pounds of dynamite to excavate and construct it. When it opened in 1914, the 51-mile-long waterway through the Isthmus of Panama finally linked the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
