11 Objectives Development of a Sustainable Ship Recycling methodology under EU standards and following the IMO Convention Proposals. Design and construction of prototypes to increase safety both for workers and the environment. Demonstration projects to validate prototypes and methodology. Capacity and impact assessment study of Iberian coast for the industry Cost analysis of recycling process and evaluation of the industrial applicability. EU Legislation development

12 Objectives The principal outcomes of the project RECYSHIP are: 1. Help the development of an specific legislation for end of life vessel s residues and end of life vessels as residues. 2. Find solutions for the non IMO vessels in the local market. 3. Help increasing the EU ship recycling capacity and reducing the cost difference with other recycling countries. 4. Offer technical assistance, transfer of technology and good practices to recycling countries not EU members.

14 Objectives Complete dismantling and decontamination of a vessel following IMO convention guidelines and fulfilling EU legislations and internal normative of shipyard Complete decontamination of a vessel without affecting its towage post project for sinking to create artificial reefs Partial decontamination prior to transform it into a floating museum (possibility under study)

15 Expected results The first vessel will help us analyse costs of sustainable recycling to IMO and EU standards This 1st vessel will also give us the right amounts of residues to be extracted from the other 2 sister vessels The second one will help us analyse the possibility and the grade of pre decontamination of a vessel prior to towage The third ship will give valuable results in case full decontamination makes impossible towage of the vessel decontamination here will proceed until limit of towage is reached

17 Project BOATCYCLE boatcycle.com Institute of Chemistry & Technology of Polymers Objective: Reducing the impact of the nautical industry on the environment, through the development of methodologies for the treatment of boats as residues, both at management and waste recovery level. Specific objectives: To collect, select and manage all the different wastes becoming from the scrapping process of an inflatable boat, a yacht and a sailboat To develop a system of recycling and valorising: fibreglass, neoprene, wood and PVC To implement the best practices of the recycling and valorisation of the four wastes through demonstrative pilot experiences. To develop a comprehensive guide for sustainable production and ecodesign of both fibreglass/wood and neoprene/pvc inflatable boats. To develop both policy and technical recommendations for boat s waste management and revalorisation

18 NEXT STEPS GT terminology, which is of no use for most of the fleet, and the under 500gt and above 500gt differentiation should be changed Fishing fleet should be included in the studies There is a problem as long as vessels and boats out of use (old, abandon, confiscated...) are not considered and treated as residues include them in LER Declaration of Abandonment of vessels needs faster resolution Sales of end of life vessels too expensive for proper management Although the legislation exists, an immediate specific normative is needed
