4 Did you know... The Greatest River in the World! The Amazon River is 4200 miles long. It is bigger than the next 6 longest rivers in the world put together! It is the largest basin in the world. The Amazon produces approximately 20 percent of all the water that the world s rivers pour into the ocean on its own and discharges around 40,000 gallons of water per second in the Atlantic ocean near Belem. It s width ranges from one to 35 miles. Legend has it, that the Amazon was named as such by Portuguese explorer Pedro Teixeira because of reported encounters with wild women warriors the Greek myth about the women warriors whose valor and war cry had fearful effect on their adversaries. The Amazon Rainforest is believed to be the oldest tropical forest in the world, perhaps as much as 100 millions years.
