1 Module 4 Infection Control and Equipment Equipment
2 Equipment Objectives Classify equipment into one of three groups: 1. Clean single use item (disposable). 2. Clean reusable item (clean/sanitize and return to service). 3. Sterile items stocked that are packaged from manufacturer as sterile. * Note - all sterile items stocked are single use items and will be discarded after use.
3 Equipment Objectives cont. The Thoughtful process We will try to minimize contamination of clean equipment (handling and/or placement of equipment prior to application). Examples of poor practice would include: Allowing medical equipment to sit in snow/dirt. Removing supplies from packages before calls.
4 Equipment Objectives cont. For proper use, application or installation of the following equipment please refer to Appendix A in the student package. Appendix A references which module will deal specifically with the listed piece of equipment. Discuss difference between clean and sterile. Discuss use of aseptic technique when working with sterile equipment or in a sterile field (e.g. ob kit / equipment).
5 Clean Single use Clean items are not considered critical items as they are not meant to be directly inserted into a patient s s body ie.. such as an IV. Although not critical, they should remain free from contaminates to protect patient. Use thoughtful process when using or storing. The following items are considered clean,, are not sterile, and should be disposed of after use.
6 Oropharyngeal Airways In contact with patient s s mucosal surfaces, maintain clean technique. OPA s Single use Clean (Not Sterile) Disposable
7 Nasopharyngeal Airways In contact with patient s s mucosal surfaces, maintain clean technique. NPA s Single use Not Sterile Disposable Not currently stocked by TFS
8 Oxygen Masks Simple masks and cannula Single use only. O2 non-rebreather stocked by TFS. All other O2 devices to be replaced by non- rebreather. Clean, not sterile.
9 Oxygen Masks Oxygen Non-Rebreather Single use only. O2 non-rebreather stocked by TFS. Clean, not sterile.
10 Bag Valve Mask TFS stocks two sizes adult and pediatric. All stocked BVM s should now be single use items and disposed of after every use. BVM s are considered clean not sterile.
11 Clean Bandages vs. Sterile Triangular bandages have a variety of uses. Single use only. Unlike most stocked bandages triangulars are not packaged sterile.
12 Clean - Reusable Items that are reusable require cleaning/sanitizing following contamination before being returned to service. These items are not disposable. Thoughtful process should be used to minimize contamination of equipment to protect patient.
13 Oxygen delivery devices Oxygen cylinders and regulators are clean not sterile. Not disposable. Must be cleaned and returned to service.
14 Portable Suction (V-Vac Vac suction) After use, separates into two pieces. Canister is disposable. Handle must be cleaned and returned to service with new canister installed.
15 Traction Splints Stocked by TEMS not TFS. Clean not sterile. Reusable and should be cleaned/sanitized after every use. Use thoughtful process during application to reduce contamination.
16 Cervical Collars Clean not sterile. Reusable and should be cleaned/sanitized after every use. Use thoughtful process during application to reduce contamination.
17 Head Immobilizer Stocked by TEMS not TFS. Clean not sterile. Reusable and should be cleaned/sanitized after every use. Use thoughtful process during application to reduce contamination.
18 Spinal Boards Clean not sterile. Reusable and should be cleaned/sanitized after every use. Use thoughtful process during application to reduce contamination.
19 KED Stocked by TEMS and some TFS apparatus. Clean not sterile. Reusable and should be cleaned/sanitized after every use. Use thoughtful process during application to reduce contamination for patient safety.
20 Splinting Devices Upper and lower extremity. Speedsplint is disposable, others may be cleaned and returned to service. Clean not sterile.
21 Scoop Stretcher Stocked by TEMS not TFS. Clean not sterile. Reusable and should be cleaned/sanitized after every use. Use thoughtful process during application to reduce contamination.
22 Blood Pressure Cuff Not currently stocked by TFS. Clean not sterile. Reusable and should be cleaned/sanitized after every use. Use thoughtful process during application to reduce contamination.
23 Stethoscope Not currently stocked by TFS. Clean not sterile. Reusable and should be cleaned/sanitized after every use, to include bell and earpieces. Use thoughtful process during application to reduce contamination.
24 35 A stretcher Stocked by TEMS not TFS. Clean not sterile. Reusable and should be cleaned/sanitized after every use. Use thoughtful process during application to reduce contamination.
25 AED unit To include: Case Unit Cables Pads (disposable) Stocked equipment Clean/sanitize and return to service
26 Sterile Items Stocked sterile items are all single use and will be disposed of after use. These items are received sterile from manufacturer. Items will be used with clean technique and thoughtful process to reduce contamination. OB kit contains sterile gloves to allow for aseptic technique vs. clean technique. Package must be intact to ensure sterility.
27 Stocked Sterile Items OB Kit Contents are sterile requiring aseptic technique All contents are single use only
28 Stocked Sterile Items Dressings 4X4 s Burn dressings Dressings in OB Kit Normal saline All single use only
29 Sterile Dressings Only remain sterile if the package is intact. Use aseptic technique if indicated (OB Kit). Otherwise use clean technique and thoughtful process to reduce contamination.
30 Stocked Sterile Items Sterile Gloves Found in OB Kit Don/Doff using aseptic technique
31 Aseptic technique Donning Sterile Gloves Carefully peel open package. Remove inner package containing gloves.
32 Aseptic technique Donning Sterile Gloves Carefully open inner package. Fold back upper and lower folds. Always be careful not to touch inside of wrap.
33 Aseptic technique Donning Sterile Gloves Carefully peel open inner package. Remember, do not touch inside of wrap or outside surface of gloves. Note folded down cuff on both gloves.
34 Aseptic technique Donning Sterile Gloves Grasp cuff only touching what will be the inside surface of glove. Don glove not touching outside surface.
35 Aseptic technique Donning Sterile Gloves Pull on until properly fitted. First hand is now sterile. Grasp second glove for donning.
36 Aseptic technique Donning Sterile Gloves Tuck fingers of gloved hand under cuff so gloves contact outside to outside surfaces. Pull on until properly fitted, not touching outside surface to skin.
37 Grasp cuff only touching outside surface of glove. Aseptic technique Doffing Sterile Gloves Pull glove down and remove. Continue to hold doffed glove.
38 Aseptic technique Doffing Sterile Gloves Tuck fingers of ungloved hand under cuff so hands do not contact contaminated exterior surface. Push glove off wrapping second glove around first glove.
39 Aseptic technique Doffing Sterile Gloves Place balled up gloves on inner package to wrap and dispose. Or place directly into a biohazard bag/container. Wash hands.
