16 5% 20% 75% TIpS AND TECHNIQuES TIp 1 Choose The blade best suited to your application. Thinner blades cut throuqh sweet material with less effort. TIp 2 Thicker blades resist breaking and are ideal for cutting material such as carpeting when you may heed to eert some lateral force. TIp To avoid tearing always use a sharp blade and lower the angle to create a slicing action. TIp 4 Wet paper and plastic film is best cut with a conve blade or a straight blade held at a low angle. TIp 5 For cutting fine materials use a cutting mat. TIp 6 Cut against a steel straightedge preferably with a finger protecting channel. TIp 7 When cutting several thicknesses of sheet material make several lighter cuts rather than a few heavy cuts. TOp TIp Replace the blade as soon as it loses it s sharpness to avoid damaging the work and reduce the amount of effort you need to eert. Safety Retract or remove blades when not in use. 39 TIPS AND TECHNIQUES TIP 1 Clamp the workpiece securely in an engineer s vice. TIP 2 Take time to set the blade tension correctly, too soft and the blade may snag and break. TIP Ensure that the flow of water or gas in pipes has been safely turned off. TIP 8 When cutting thick rod or bar stock mark the cutting line all the way around. Make your first cut to the depth of the blade on the upper surface. Rotate the steel towards you and again cut to the depth of the blade. Continue until the cut is completed. TIP 4 When cutting thin sheet metal it is a good idea to sandwich it between two pieces of plywood for support. TIP 5 Select a blade with a tooth count that will ensure that at least three teeth are in contact with the metal to being cut all the time. TIP 6 Make the cut at a low angle to help create a smooth free flowing cut. TIP 7 Cutting metal tubing requires a fine-toothed blade at least 24 tpi. Commence the saw cut until the blade penetrates through the pipe wall. Continue to cut on the nearer wall of the pipe for a smoother vibration free cut, do this by rotating the pipe away from you. TIP 9 With all types of cut support the waste material as you near the completion of the cut. TOP TIP Support fragile sheet material and select a blade that allows at least three teeth to be in contact with the work. If the blade snaps in the middle of a cut restart the cut at the far edge to prevent the slightly thicker blade from jamming in the cut. Use a new blade when cutting brass to minimise the risk of blade slip.
