1 Innersprings The innerspring mattress is the most common and largest selling type of sleep surface in the United States. It is very important to have a complete understanding of the components that make up a mattress and box spring, and of the different types of spring units that are on the market. Several different things need to be looked at to determine the quality of a mattress and box spring: 1. What type of spring unit is used. 2. Coil count of spring unit. 3. Engineering principles and design of spring unit. 4. Amounts and types of padding used to upholster the mattress. 5. Quality of the foams and upholstery application. 6. Design, construction, and manufacturing techniques used. COIL TYPES There are a variety of innerspring units available, some made to meet a promotional price; others with enhanced features and benefits. BONNELL This is the most basic and most widely used innerspring on the market. It is a cylindrical coil with an hour glass shape and it is available in a variety of coil counts, anywhere from 252 to 400 on a full size. The wire gauge will be anywhere from 12.5 to 14. This unit has vertical coils that are knotted on the top and bottom, and are all turned in the same direction. OFFSET This unit is identical to the bonnell except it has offset notches on the top and bottom of the coil to give a little better hinging action. The most common coil counts in an offset unit are 308, 330 and 368. LURA FLEX (LFK) A modified form of the offset coil except it has no knots, so it is an open-ended coil. The coils are also much smaller in diameter, therefore, more coils fit in a bed. The LFK coil counts will range from 570 to 660 in a full size and the wire gauge is normally 15. This is also a vertical coil design, which means the coils will have a tendency to cave in or hammock towards where the most weight is applied.

2 Innersprings MARSHALL UNIT (POCKETED COIL) Individual coils that are compressed into a flexible, non-woven fabric pocket, and then hot-melted together to make up the unit. Coil counts will range from 580 to 740 in a full size, wire gauge from 13 to 15. These coils are also a vertical design and definitely have a tendency to lean and hammock towards the most weight or pressure. CONTINUOUS COILS Each row of coils is fashioned from one continuous strand of wire. Coil counts will range from 432 to 740 in a full size and the wire gauge from 12.5 to 16. There are two types of continuous units, one with vertical coils that will have the same tendencies as the previous units, only to a lesser degree and the other has angled, interlocked rows of coils that run from head to foot. The latter style is the most advanced and offers the best comfort and support. Most manufacturers will try to do something to the borders of their mattress to make them more durable. Some add 4 to 10 side support devices; others add a firm piece of closed cell foam. The best edge support is a complete extra row of coils around the entire mattress border. 8 Foam Several different types of polyurethane foam are used in our mattresses to achieve different comfort levels and qualities. Foam is used in both the comfort and quilt packages of the mattress. There are two things that are important when discussing foam: DENSITY DENSITY IS MEASUREMENT OF QUALITY Foam, after it is manufactured, is a combination of material and air. The difference in the amount of air vs. material is the measurement called density. This is figured by weighing a cubic foot of foam. If a 12 x12 x12 piece of foam weighs 2 lbs., it is a 2.0 density piece of foam; if it weighs ½ lb. it is.5 density, etc. If the same size piece of foam weighs more that means there is more material, less air. Therefore, it is better quality. The industry standard for mattress foam is 1.2 density. Jonathan Stevens uses 1.2, 1.5, 1.8, 2.0, and 2.4 density foams. We are committed to using the highest density foam we can in the individual applications to insure a quality, durable product. The higher the density of foam, the longer it will last. INDENTATION LOAD DEFLECTION (ILD) ILD IS MEASUREMENT OF FIRMNESS ILD is a measure of load bearing ability. This measurement is taken by recording the amount of force, in pounds, that is required to compress a 4 piece of foam to 3. The more pressure required, the firmer the foam. HIGH RESILIENCY (HR) FOAM HR foam is a high density polyurethane foam with a unique cell structure that gives it exceptional comfort, memory and durability. We now refer to the cover fabric of the mattress generically as ticking, then qualify the type to be damask, stretch knit, woven, printed non-woven, etc. These fabrics are now style driven for eye - appeal, and enhanced with a variety of features (Silver Clean, XTRA Cool, Aloe Vera, etc.) to distinguish the mattress. The fibers may also be made of specialty yarns (bamboo, silk, cashmere, micro tencel etc.) for more options.
