1 Teachers pack Key Stage Iron Age Inhabitants Teachers information This programme is for years 3 and and designed to link directly to the history curriculum Outline of programme During their visit students will explore Iron Age life through a range of outdoor, hands on activities led by our Forest School eader at the Forest School site in the grounds. After a group introduction students will be split into 5 groups and will rotate through the following activities Hands on Wattle and Daub with willow, clay, soil, straw and manure Build and construct a traditional Iron Age stone or wood round house settlement using natural resources and materials on site. (Small scale, knee height miniature settlement) Create a natural coloured wool weave Design a garment brooch from clay Prepare the fire for heat, survival, food and protection Each group will in turn visit the fire and have an opportunity to taste a traditional Iron Age bread recipe Once all groups have had an opportunity to try each task and time allowing, activities can be revisited to finish off or to just have another go. The day will end with the students reflecting on their time as Iron Age inhabitants. Project timing 0am.5pm T Registered Charity No 0378

2 Important information for your visit This programme will be led by a qualified Forest School practitioner Free coach parking is provided in the main car park. Coaches cannot drop off at the gallery owing to weight restrictions on the Adam Bridge. When arriving please enter through the gate behind the ticket lodge in the main car park The walk from the car park will take approximately 0 minutes. Our Forest School eader will meet you at the gallery. We can only accept a maximum of 30 pupils or one class onto this project. Students will need to be split into 5 groups for the activities Students will need all day supervision and each group will need a supervising adult. We suggest a ratio of :6 Each student will need appropriate outdoor clothing including wellington boots and waterproofs. Students are advised to wear long sleeves and trousers or leggings at all times along with warm clothing in the winter and hats during hot weather. This programme will take place outside in all weather conditions. In the unlikely event of extreme weather, the activities will be cancelled and rescheduled if an indoor alternative cannot be offered. We recommend staff bring a camera to record the activities. Photography is permitted in the grounds, earning Centre and permanent collections. Photography is not permitted in the exhibition galleries. Prior to your visit please make us aware of any students with additional requirements or special needs so we can make all necessary arrangements Goodie bags are available to pre order from the shop. 3 Timetable 0am 0.5am 0.5am.5am Introduction at the Forest School site Forest School site Students will be split into 5 groups and take part in a series of Iron Age activities. Each activity will last 5 minutes and groups will rotate between them. noon.5pm unch On the West awn or at the Forest School site. At the beginning of lunch all students will be taken to the earning Centre to use the toilet facilities..5pm.00pm.00pm.5pm Forest School site Students will continue to rotate through the activities in their groups. Plenary at the Forest School site Students and teachers review their day and reflect upon their time as Iron Age inhabitants Extension activities Students could create their own Iron Age settlement back at school using the skills learnt on their visit. They could work together to construct a life size round house or make smaller individual buildings to make a model village. Students could further explore weaving back at school by experimenting with different methods and materials. They could try using a peg loom or weaving card and experiment with different threads, paper, or natural or recycled objects such as straw or plastic bags. Students could make individual squares which could then be sewn together to make a wall hanging or blanket. Students could make their own Iron Age bread like the one they will taste on the visit using the recipe below. 3 T Registered Charity No 0378

4 Iron Age bread (sourdough) recipe Time: hours preparation and cooking time (including hours for the dough to prove) Equipment arge mixing bowls Wooden spoon Weighing scales baking tin or tray A knife A clean tea towel Ingredients 350g ( oz) flour tbsp of salt 50ml (8fl oz) sourdough starter 0ml ( fl oz) lukewarm water ethod Combine flour and salt in a large bowl ake a well in the center and add sourdough starter and water Stir from the center and fold the flour into the wet ingredients to form a dough On a floured surface knead the dough until smooth and stretchy eave in a clean and covered bowl to rise for about two hours Grease baking tin or tray Punch and knead down the dough and form into a loaf Dust with flour and use the knife to score lengthways Place onto the baking tray or tin and bake for 5 minutes on 0 C then lower heat to 90 C and bake for 30 minutes T Registered Charity No 0378
