1 VOLUME 17 ISSUE 6 27TH OCTOBER 2017 Merry Christmas & Happy New Year Inside this issue: Port Seton, Glenrothes, Buckie, Innerleithen, Helensburgh, Bridge of Allan, Carnoustie, Ponteland, Castle Douglas, Edinburgh (2), Nairn, Culbokie, Fochabers, Killearn, Kirkcaldy, Linlithgow, Bridge of Allan, Laurencekirk, Giffnock, Stirling, Braco, St Andrews, Troon, Edinburgh, Bearsden, Kilmorack, Melrose, Milngavie, Morpeth Broxburn, Stirling, Dumfries, Port Seton, Stonehouse, Dunfermline, Cardross, Bridge of Allan Edinburgh, Aboyne Falkirk, Bridge of Allan, Stirling, Kilmarnock, Airdrie, Ayr, Coupar Angus, Forres, Penrith, Bridge of Allan Edinburgh (2), Seamill, Dundee, Bridge of Allan, Rhu Village, 2 3 & 4 4 & 5 6 & 7 7 & 8 9 Scottish Country Dances Dance Diary Dancing News Are RSCDS Branch Fees a factor in Membership decline? Society Membership is currently 20 per annum though no increase is proposed for 2018/2019. Branch Membership fees are payable on top, and these vary greatly in price. It is hard to see the justification for both the increases and the variability of these 'top-up' fees (which range from 1 to 10!) The once heavy expenses of printing and postage have all but disappeared with the inception of electronic communication. Similarly, the cost of producing membership cards is much less, as Society Members are issued with lifetime membership cards. The question of 'value-for-money' continues to irritate members as (some) Branches adopt the practice of hiring a Dance Band of two, or even one, player in the interest of 'balancing the books'. Some even just use Recorded Music for dances. Yes, of course, Branches must manage their monies responsibly but their raison d'être is not to make a profit: it is to promote Scottish Country Dancing for the benefit of its members. For many fully paid up Society/Branch Members it is difficult to see what the benefits of membership are. The most obvious means of benefitting members is through variable ticket pricing: and yet this seems to obtain in only a very small number of Branches. This lack of variability in charges even extends to some Branch Classes which charge a blanket class fee, disregarding the Society's position (as stated on its Website) that members will receive a reduction in class fees. Yet Dance Clubs, including those affiliated to Branches, operate for the most part without a membership fee, charge very reasonably for admission to dances, and often make a profit which is donated to charity!! Makes you think, doesn't it?? Now that the Society is reviewing its relationship with Branches, this is an opportune moment to be clear in its Branch Charter that the Society offers discernible benefits to ALL of its members. Yes, I do understand that Branches have autonomy but the Society, as the overarching body, has the moral responsibility of ensuring that Branch practices are consistent with the Society's charitable values. Lear ning by Vide o Given the value of videos for learning or brushing up on a dance, the Society intend making it possible for dancers to view a video of every dance publicised by them. They are looking for Groups who can produce dance videos to join them in this venture. See page 5 of the Scottish Country Dancer of October 2017 for details of the criteria the Society are applying for those wishing to help them. That in no way prevents Groups from producing videos on their own and uploading them to the web Erskine, Bridge of Allan, Port Seton, Bearsden, Troon. Contact Details 10 On that vein it would be advantageous if someone would make a video of the correct way to dance Ythanside by John Drewry. There is only one video online for this dance but it does not follow John s instructions for the dance and is misleading. If you are producing videos you should follow the devisor s instructions exactly.
