2 Friday, January 2, 2015 The Nine Online KIXE-HD Channel 9-1 Friday, January 2, 2015 Great Performances: From Vienna: The New Year's Celebration 2015 Call The Midwife Holiday Special Live from Lincoln Center: Gershwin Celebration at the New York Philharmonic 7:30pm California's Gold - Spontaneous Adventures Huell visits the Monterey Customs House State Historic Park, discovers the tallest bridge in California, and checks out the town of Cool- all unplanned adventures. At one time, the Custom House presided over Mexico's primary port of entry on the Alta, CA coast. It was here that Commodore Jon Drake Sloat raised the American flag in July of 1846, claiming over 600,000 square miles of territory for the US. This territory later was included in all or portions of the states of Utah, Colorado, Arizona, California and New Mexico. This building is recognized as the oldest government building in California and it is State Historic landmark #1. Wander through this adobe building and find it as it looked in the 1840's. Try guessing to what purpose the items on display were used for. Is Sebastian the parrot real? Gaze out from the upper room where custom agents and soldiers once stayed. Watch for ships arriving from sea, much as the custom's officials did over 150 years ago. Next, Huell stumbles upon the tallest bridge in California. Located on Foresthill Road in Placer County near historic Hwy 49, The Foresthill Bridge was built to span a lake that never arrived from the damming of the American River in Auburn, CA. And then Huell wanders right into Cool, California and enjoys a visit to the local beauty salon and meets the mayor! 8:00pm Washington Week with Gwen Ifill Next Air 01/03/15 01:00am 8:30pm Charlie Rose - The Week Next Air 01/03/15 01:30am 9:00pm Billy Joel: The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize This music special honors singer-songwriter Billy Joel's receipt of the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. In "Drones," NOVA launches an investigation of the explosive growth of airborne UAVs or pilotless drones. During the invasion of Iraq in 2003, the U.S. deployed only a handful; now, it has more than 7,000. Besides the U.S., over 40 other nations are now building or buying these increasingly lethal and cost-effective weapons, and it's only a matter of time before a terrorist group turns the technology against Western targets. The latest Predators can track 12 targets at once, trace footprints back to their source and even recognize individual faces. Yesterday's soldiers and pilots put their lives on the line but today, a UAV pilot can "fly" a mission in Afghanistan remotely from a base in Nevada. As one pilot said, after carrying out a strike, "within 20 minutes you can be sitting at the dinner table talking to your kids." That new ability has already saved hundreds if not thousands of U.S. service lives but may make military strikes a more tempting, seemingly risk-free option. For fifty years, a constant, stalwart and integral part of that history has been the blue and gold hulls of the Alaska Marine Highway ships. These sea-going vessels serve as the only "roadway" to many parts of coastal Alaska and are used as an integral lifeline to the people who live along the miles of Alaska Marine Highway routes. Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Alaska's Marine Highway and join residents and visitors on an adventure through the most rugged and beautiful surroundings in our country - the Last Frontier of Alaska. 8:00pm Great British Baking Show - Bread It's week three and the remaining 10 bakers get ready to brave bread. Since it was first proposed nearly fifty years ago, the Higgs has been the holy grail of particle physicists: if they can find it, it will validate the "standard model" that underlies all of modern physics. CERN's scientists are still scrutinizing the results from July to see how well they fit the Higgs prediction. If the data conceals surprises, they could upend much of what we thought we knew about the particles and forces that make up our universe. Senior politicians also note the disappearance of the collegiality they once shared with peers of differing political ideologies. As a result, the ability to discuss issues from varying points of view and negotiate solutions, appears to be fading from the American political process. Among many topics, OUT OF ORDER addresses the decline in civil discourse and the news media's role in it, partisan gridlock, gerrymandering, vanishing commitment to reasonable compromise, the vilification of moderates and declining civic engagement. The half- hour documentary relies on interviews with a broad range of political experts and observers from journalists, academics and political strategists to senior elected officials. They include: journalist Bob Schieffer (CBS News), Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA), Sen. Susan Collins (R- MA), Fmr Sen. Evan Bayh (D-IN), Fmr Sen. Alan Simpson (R-WY), Fmr Sen. John Warner (R-VA). 10:00pm Gold Fever and the Bechtler Mint This 30-minute historical documentary tells the little-known story of America's first gold rush, which took place in North Carolina during the early decades of the nineteenth century, nearly fifty years before the discovery of gold in California.
