4 Editors Ramblings Well, as we go through Spring into Summer, things are definitely changing within ECP&DA. After 25 years of sterling service Howard has now stepped down and Norman Cornwall has been elected as the new Chairman. I m sure I m not alone in offering Howard a big THANKYOU for all the years of dedicated graft he has put in on our behalf. His departure from the Top Table may result in a new style of leadership and possibly a change of direction for the association if we are to survive the dwindling membership figures that Shirley gives us every month. One possible route is a closer relationship with CRT to enable our work parties to assist in tasks along the whole length of the Erewash not just at Langley Mill or Sandiacre. We have now stepped into the 21st century with regard to our contact with members. The Outlook is now available by for any member wishing to help save the planet (& postage costs), and a supplementary newsletter, the Erewash Navigator, has been launched. A sample is a shown on page 8. To assist us with the transition into modern communications methods we are pleased to have on board a new member, Chris Page, who has volunteered to help with our Facebook and Twitter pages. Who says us dinosaurs can t adapt! On the subject of work parties, to enable us to work independently under the umbrella of C&RT (as we did with BW), we will have to recruit another Work Party Organiser and also a certified first aider now that Alan Woodhouse is no longer with us. To help fill these 2 important positions would all of you please put your thinking hats on and either offer your own services, if you feel you would like to involve yourselves more with the workings of the organisation, or nominate somebody else whom you think would be suitable and willing to assist. In response to some questions raised from within our existing membership, the associations monthly meeting minutes of meeting will now be available by to those who wish to keep up with the goings on of the association. It has also been suggested that the association compile its own calendar to generate some revenue. If you think it s a good idea please contact the editors with your suggestions for subject matter. A review will be held at the end of the year to analyse the member s thoughts. Now it has come to that time of the year when the boaters are getting out and about and the non-boaters are roaming around the countryside. As we all like to have information on places worth visiting it would be brilliant if some of you could keep us informed as to where you have ventured and what your thoughts

5 are on the places you have visited. Are they worth the rest of us travelling to see them? Just a few lines sent through to the Outlook could open up all manner of possible future trips for your fellow members. And Finally. C&RT have now issued their long heralded guidelines for shared towpaths. It s an 8 page document entitled Better Towpaths For Everyone which I suspect the anti-social elements will probably not read anyway. Is this yet another waste of our money? It is available to view/download on C&RT s website at:- -policy.pdfcanalrivertrust.org.uk Stay safe and have a Good Summer Ian & Irene Editors Report No 129 Chairman s Report Summer2015 Is this my final, final, report? I thought when I put my chairman s piece in the last edition of Outlook there would be no need for me to rack my brain or get on my high horse about some matter concerning the Erewash canal. - Wrong!! The editor reminded me it would not be until after the AGM that I could put my feet up but not so gracefully. No chance of that. Over the last months the Erewash Canal has sunk to a new low on repairs. Ground paddles have had black bags and tape put on them, Dockholme Lock has gates too stiff to open and the new ground paddle at Sandiacre very hard to get started. The waterway manager has promised to look at all complaints personally The dredging is still ongoing and whereas it was thought to be an in and out job they are still there after six weeks. I would like to finish on a very happy note. Chris Corbett who was an early member of ECP&DA and is leader of Erewash Borough Council has sent a letter thanking me for the work I had done since becoming chairman. Blowing one s own trumpet to me is conceit but praise from someone of high standing is something I will always keep. Finally, I have to say a big thank you to all of the members that contributed to my retirement gift. As a Brass Band enthusiast this token of everyone s appreciation is very gratefully accepted. Howard Smith.

6 Membership Matters New Members I would like to give a very warm welcome to; Individual member, Chris Page of Eastwood. 10 10 ABOUT HOWARD BY CAROLE & MICHAEL Our first acquaintance with Howard was while he was moored at Gallows Inn in 1993, he was watching football with his friend Jim while Sheila and Ann had gone shopping. He was on his first trip up to Langley Mill to take up a mooring in the Great Northern Basin. Little did he know that he would get to know the canal and Great Northern Basin very well in the next 22 years. At that first meeting he was persuaded to take on the chairman s position after the retirement of Jim Stevenson. Howard became a very well organised chairman paying attention to anything that came his way and had a good repore with the members, British Waterways and local authorities, managing to obtain finance for the extension of the canal at Langley Mill in One of Howards last projects was the acquisition of the cottage at the G.N.B which now belongs to the E.C.P. & D.A. Howard was responsible for a great many improvements within the association over the years. Howard was and still is involved with the AWCC as chair and rep. and he still attends many meetings. Over the years Howard and Sheila became our firm friends and we cruised many canals with them and other members of the association. On canals as far away as the Kennet & Avon to Bristol, the Basingstoke canal in the South, to the northern canals including the Lancaster and many other canals in between. They used to join us in the pub at night even though they don t drink beer. At Anderton Lift Receiving CRT Award We wish him a good retirement having been our longest serving chairman and close friend, and I know we will still see plenty of him on the canal and at meetings. He will now have more time to do all those unfinished jobs at home for Sheila. At Sandiacre Cottage

11 Howards Retirement Gift Member s contributions to Howard s collection bought 2 tickets to a Brass Band concert at the Sage Theatre in Newcastle along with an overnight stay in a local hotel. The tickets were presented to Howard by Jim Stevenson at the AGM. Erewash Outlook gets AWCC Award It was with great surprise that Howard received the Highly Commended award for associated club magazines from AWCC in March. The editors were equally surprised when they received the news from Howard. Not sitting on our laurels, we now have a goal to reach, ie getting from 3rd place to 1st. We will need your help with new articles to get there though! The Award Editors displaying the award SHEILA S GADABOUTS I am just writing this short statement to stop the story s going round that Sheila is not doing any more trips and that Heather and I have taken over because we have arrange a turkey & tinsel this year. Sheila has put in a lot of hard work over the years she has been doing them, so I have suggested to her that after the Tenby trip and the one to Germany, that some of them are going on later in the year, she takes the rest of the year off and has a well earn rest. Then, when she feels ready to go again, plan us something for next year. Carole

12 DREDGING ON THE EREWASH CANAL It has been a long time since there has been a major dredging operation on the Erewash canal, the last one being the Long Eaton pound some years ago. We are now pleased to report of a major dredging operation in the Ilkeston area and up to Cotmanhay, some sections of which we can never remember being dredged in 50 years. Above Greens Lock Below Barker s Lock Here are some of the specifications of the work undertaken:- The first dredging operation was from Hallam Fields to Greens Lock where 3707 cubic mtrs or 5,190 tonnes were removed. All the dredgings were taken to the tip at Hallam Fields. By using this old dredging tip, last used in 1991/2 when British Waterways last dredged the section, CRT have saved 305 lorry movements, 30,500 in transport costs and 85,500 in landfill fees. Waiting to unload Hallam Fields Tip Area

13 The second dredging operation was from Black Bridge, near Mill Street, Ilkeston to Bridge Street, Cotmanhay. A distance of approximately 1.5 miles where 2,729 cubic mtrs or 3,820 tonnes were removed. Material from this operation was removed by road transport from a loading point below Barkers Lock and taken to a landfill site near Coventry, called Bubberhall. Transferring waste to lorry This is a partnership venture between C&RT and Land & Water Services, where non-hazardous material is taken, dried and (if suitable) used as landfill capping (at a reduced disposal rate). This allows the dredged material to dry and shrink down by around 30% thereby reducing the overall volume and associated disposal costs. The savings made in this process are shared between C&RT and L&WS. Spot Dredging and other works:- Shipley Aqueduct - (nicospan bank protection to be installed offside above the aqueduct), area near the winding hole at Quorkey Bridge, opposite the sewage works (upperside Eastwood Lock), feeder Langley Mill. Thanks to Mark Weatherall, Senior Project Manager at C&RT for supplying the information, who also stated that there were not many bikes or shopping trolleys. (We must be getting topside of it!) Michael & Carole Golds

14 Canal Clean-up March 2015 Over Friday & Saturday the 27th/28th of March, a canal clean-up was undertaken by ECP&DA, C&RT, IWA East Midlands & local volunteers. Starting at 9.00am at Gallows Inn Lock on the Friday, the combined parties set off on foot and by boat to tackle the detritus found in and around the canal. To prevent any of the volunteers stepping in undesirable substances, a volunteer went ahead of the foot patrols to spray paint any doggie deposits encountered on the towpath. Several cans of spray paint were required for this exercise! Over the course of the day numerous bags of rubbish were collected and various items extracted from the water. These included several tyres, lengths of wire and assorted pieces of metalwork. Nothing as exciting as new motorbikes this time. The day concluded at Sandiacre at around On the Saturday a reduced number of people tackled the stretch of canal from Sandiacre to Trent Lock. Again a good quantity of rubbish bags were filled over this section with the majority being filled in the Long Eaton area which traditionally has been neglected. As can be seen from the photograph of the work pan, a varied load of rubbish was extracted from the canal. All in all a very useful exercise which, based on the quantity of rubbish collected, indicates that we may actually be getting on top of the litter problem on the Erewash as the overall quantity was less than on previous clean-ups.

15 Another Pie & Pea Success A big thank you once again to Mike & Carole Golds for arranging another successful Start of Season weekend at the Lock Cottage, Sandiacre on 20th & 21st March. An informal games evening on Friday night was followed by the Saturday evening Pie & Pea. As usual the pies were provided by Redgate Farm, Eastwood, the service inhouse by Margaret Cakebread, Irene Jameison and Izzie Turner, and the crowd control by Heather Fox. The event was very well attended and around 19 boats arrived for the weekend. The evenings entertainment was provided by The Chilli Dogs with their own blend of rock, pop and country folk music which was very well received by the audience. An encore was unanimously requested by the audience and the band duly obliged with another couple of numbers.

16 Sandiacre Lock Cottage Water Leak Repaired! Water has been leaking under the concrete at the rear of the cottage for the past 4 years. It was first spotted during a routine visit when water was noted as running through the by-wash inspection manhole. After the March Pie & Pea gathering Dennis Cakebread agreed to investigate the source of the leak and, after breaking out a large area of concrete, found that the lead water supply pipe had ruptured. There was a considerable quantity of water spilling out so it was decided to ask C&RT to get it repaired. Their response was You rent the cottage so you repair it. A work party was then organised for the following Friday where the section of pipe was exposed and isolated by closing the stopcock in the adjoining bungalow. (The cottage does not have its own isolation valve). The affected section of pipe was removed, a new brass stopcock fitted and concrete base for a valve chamber poured. Mike Golds arranged for the concrete section valve chamber to be fitted which he completed the following week. At the next work party the excavated hole was prepared and then a new concrete infill poured and levelled. All in all quite a satisfactory outcome and at a fraction of the cost that C&RT quoted (> 500). Well done to the ECP&DA volunteers for another excellent job.

17 From our new chairman elect:- Norman Cornwall Having been elected, one of my priorities will be to help find ways of increasing our membership, particularly recruiting younger members. We need to take all opportunities to promote ECP & DA, finding ways in which we can speak to potential members, such as our forthcoming participation in Long Eaton Civic Society s clean up on 7 th June and at the Nottingham Beer Festival in October. I think work parties should include the whole canal, not just Langley Mill and Sandiacre Lock Cottage. In order to achieve this, we need projects on the canal; one possibility is upgrading and repairing the towpath in various locations. We are already in discussion with CRT about this. I have also spoken to CRT about ongoing, regular maintenance of lock gear and the like. If we are seen by users of the canal we have the opportunity of promoting ECP & DA. My aim is for closer co-operation with local canal associations, Friends of the Cromford, Derby & Sandiacre and perhaps even Trent & Mersey. It is also easy to forget that CRT are a charity who need to fund raise and rely on volunteers, which creates opportunities for closer co-operation between us. I would like to raise our profile in the waterways press, promoting both canal and membership of ECP & DA. Locally, how about posters in the notice boards on the Nottingham Canal toll house at Langley Mill and at Sandiacre? I believe we should look at getting some sensibly priced operator training for the machines we own, possibly through IWA. At present we have one regular driver of the RB excavator and Case and to the best of my knowledge, only one other person may be qualified to drive them. I would like to look at funding opportunities with local organisations such as Asda, Tesco and the like. There may be other possible sources of income such as grants etc. We have a rally to look forward to in It sounds a long way ahead but takes a lot of organising. In short, new, younger members, more of the membership sharing the running of the Association, collaboration and co-operation with other clubs and organisations and seeking out new projects and the funding for them. Finally, the elephant in the room. I would love us to be able to continue where we left off with the Cromford extension, although I believe this should be in co-operation and collaboration with the Friends of Cromford Canal. Leaving aside all the funding, environmental and other issues that come with it, I believe the canal can extended up to the A610 and beyond. I want to be alive when that happens! Norman Cornwall

18 The Following is a report from Karen regarding the seminar she and Shirley attended on attracting younger members. Next generation waterway support where will it come from? The voluntary sector is currently giving much thought to how it needs to adapt to the ageing society, whilst at the same time engaging younger audiences. The ways in which people use their leisure time in the future, gift their time to charities and connect to their communities will change. Is the waterway sector ready and equipped to respond to society and continue to attract members, volunteers and supporters? Our ageing society is likely to have a profound effect on UK charities. As the baby boomer generation retire in greater numbers, a generation that has different expectations for their leisure time, the tension between maintaining an attractive offer for existing supporters and growing the involvement of younger people may become stronger. In addition, many waterway societies have aspirations to engage those between years, is it feasible to reach and engage people of all ages with just one offer? Are waterway societies/groups ready and equipped to attract a new generation of supporter which are more confident and tech-savvy than ever before? Held on Saturday 21 st March 2015 at The Bond Company, Fazeley Street, Birmingham B5 5SE, this conference was organised by the Worcester, Birmingham & Droitwich Canals Society and the Canal & River Trust (C&RT). It was attended on behalf of the ECP&DA by Shirley Cornwell (Membership Secretary) and Karen Wilson (Treasurer). There was a wide range of speakers from different organisations and backgrounds. The main points arising out of the day were: The competition is people s social life and hobbies, not always other organisations Social media is now the biggest recruiting tool: Facebook - Twitter - LinkedIn Your website needs to be up-to-date, informative, clear, concise and easy to navigate Volunteering sessions need to be enjoyable, social and non-commitment occasions let them enjoy themselves (they are more likely to come back then) do not expect people to commit long term

19 What should your organisation provide for young people? Major, realistic projects Skill development Involvement in decision making We need to recognise that they have pressures we didn t What, as an Association, are we doing/can we do? Agree on a new realistic project or smaller projects along the canal Create a Facebook page (Done) Refresh the ECP&DA website give it a new look? does an existing member (or family member) have the skills to do this? there are free websites that can be downloaded to start again; or Youth Web Builders they provide an extremely cost-effective solution to ensure that new and existing websites are built or modified As a Youth Web Builder, you ll be placed with a small business or charity for up to 20 days. During this time you ll work through an innovative Level 2 qualification to hone the skills you need to provide them with a simple website. You ll set it up so that they can easily maintain it themselves later That person gets a qualification; ECP&DA get a new website image! Use Survey Monkey to create a questionnaire to ask current members what they would like, how they can help etc (Done) For younger people campaign and recruit from The Long Eaton Sea Scouts; Army Cadets; Long Eaton 6 th Form, other 6 th form organisations, University Conservation Groups. There is no law to stop young people volunteering, in fact it is good for their CV s and can count toward awards, i.e. Duke of Edinburgh etc Target the young ones and the parents may become interested too Create a Twitter account (need projects 1 st ) So now we know what we have to aspire to in order to grow our association. Thank you Karen & Shirley for taking the time to attend on our behalf. Ed

20 ANGLING In the April edition of Towpath Talk, David Kent pays tribute to Canal & River Trust s Fisheries & Angling team and the Environment Agency for their brilliant efforts to restock the Erewash Canal. So far I have caught nothing from the Canal, but from what I have heard of individual and match performances it looks as though some of the fish that were put into the water have yet to fully disperse. Over Easter I saw no adults fishing but 3 lads were busy above Dockholm Lock. The had caught nothing but were very enthusiastic and had some really fat, red, wriggling maggots. David Kent, who contributed to the last edition of the Outlook, suggested at the end of his piece in the Towpath Talk that punched bread could be a good bait should the water be clear as it often is. I remember many years ago in the late 1940 s, when we were once again allowed to use bread as bait, after the restrictions of wartime, seeing anglers fishing a match in our canal. Several of them had a slice of bread beside them that looked as though it been attacked by a large woodworm, it was full of holes. They were quite a puzzle to me. It was explained to me that they were visitors from up north and that they always fished like this. When we used bread as a bait, we either made it into a paste or we just pinched a bit onto the hook. A bread punch is usually a piece of brass rod with a hole drilled into the end of it which turns it into a short tube. When this is pressed into the slice of bread it takes out a small piece that is held in the punch. This bit of bread is taken out of the punch by pressing the hook into it and drawing it out, without it being touched by human hands. This is probably a big advantage as it means that the bait will not be polluted by nicotine, human sweat or cheese and onion crisps. Fishing with punched bread can be a very delicate affair. The smallest punch that I have is 3mm, which is very small. Have a go, you can always eat the bait if you catch nothing, which is more than can be said for fat, red, wriggling maggots! Tight Lines Jim

Derby canal toll receipts I have been taking a further look at the toll ticket stubs that I rescued from the old Toll House office/cottage at Sandiacre, many years ago before it was demolished. Unlike many other canal toll tickets, the Derby Canal Company did not use tickets printed specifically for them, so they do not have any indication of where they were used, apart from their added content. For the 1912 period, I have only 48 stubs issued between 21 st August and 9 th September and 13 th October and 24 th October. In the 30 days covered by the stubs, the majority of the traffic was by Fellows Morton and Clayton Ltd. F.M.C. had replaced Pickfords as main carrier in this area in 1978 and were to continue until they went into voluntary liquidation in F.M.C. obviously had the contract to carry pipes from Stanton Ironworks and over the 30 day period covered, 24 trips carrying pipes from Sandiacre to Swarkestone were recorded, moving a total of 520 tons and 4 hundredweight. F.M.C. boats also carried goods other than pipes on the canal, including general merchandise, cases of tinned beef and sugar. Another carrying company that used the cut was the Trent Navigation Company. They appear five times in this period carrying mainly lead, but also goods grain and cake. Cake I assume to mean cow cake and not Kiplings! There is also a company called Beck & Lovell, they carried four cargoes of beer from Derby to Sandiacre and two cargoes of empties back again, always using the same steerer, J. Horsley. The F.M.C. boats carrying pipes were on a very low toll rate of 2 pence per ton, whereas coal and other goods cost 6 pence per ton. Some of the steerers of F.M.C. boats carrying pipes did the journey from Sandiacre to Swarkestone several times in the recorded period. Their names may be interesting to someone. J. Cresswell did four trips, Mrs. Conliffe and H. Harris each did three trips, J. Palin, J. Ryson, H. Clarke and F. Bradwich did two and W. Bunn, A. Prince, T. Pearce, S. Hayley and J. Hall all appear once. The rest of the steerers, apart from Mr. Horsley who took beer from Derby to Sandiacre and empties back again, were B. Sharpe, who carried cinders in his own boat, J. Bonsor, who carried coal, H. Neale, who with W. Lea and W. Withy steered F.M.C. boats not carrying pipes, S. Cose with a boat of goods and J. Bradley on J. Cowlishaws boat carrying coal. There are also R. Pacy, S. Cose and W. Davis (twice) on Trent Navigation Co. boats, W. Brighton with the Ilkeston

22 Brick Companies boat and W. Turberfield steering G. Fletchers boat. Long ago, Walter Turberfield used to visit Sandiacre Lock Cottages on open days and his name appears on the tiller on display in the Cottage.
