3 View From The Cab Did you ever give thought to why you like trains? I do and can t give you a good answer. I never worked on a railroad, have never taken a train to work only this past Memorial Day weekend did I ride Amtrak. Yes I ve ridden many tourist railroads in the United States, mostly steam powered and some diesel. Maybe it s their size or the tremendous sound of power. Especially the steam. With steam it s the size, sound, smoke steam ash and all adding to the feeling of greatness. I guess it all started with my first train set which I received on my third Christmas in By the way, I still have that set. My dad always took my brother and me to watch trains, back then it was steam. There are a few times that stick out in my mind. All instances had to have been before I was 10 years old, (I believe the last steamers on LIRR ran between ). One time we were at our grandfather s house in Richmond Hill. Dad took us to I believe, Morris Park, I remember seeing tenders being coaled under the coaling tower. Somehow, in my young mind I was seeing either fog or steam coming from the steam engine in winter, this made for an eerie scene. Other times dad would take us to an overlook in Carl Place to watch the trains go by below us again all steam. It was neat to see the smoke and steam coming out of the engines. Christmas was another great time for trains. Being of Hungarian and German ancestry we celebrated Christmas Eve with gifts. Dad and his brother would set up a table of trains to play with. But first they had to get my brother and me out of the house. So another uncle took us to watch trains, again in Carl Place. At that time we lived in what was called East Hempstead, now Uniondale. So when we got home there was this other table in the dining room covered with a sheet. We were not allowed to look until Christmas Eve dinner was over and the gift giving was done. Under the sheet were 2 train sets, American Flyer for my brother and Lionel for me. In the short time, 2 hours or so, dad and his brother built a layout that included switches, buildings and even a farm with animals. I still have those well-played-with Lionel trains safely packed away in their original boxes. It was winter with snow coming down, I remember being stopped at a grade crossing in Hicksville. There was a gate man with a hand-cranked gate that came down. This was way before the tracks were elevated in Hicksville. I don t remember the kind of engines, Steam or diesel only those hand-cranked gates. In summer we spent time in one of our uncle s cabins near the LI Sound in Riverhead. On Saturday mornings dad would take mom shopping at A&P in downtown Riverhead. On one occasion he dropped my brother and me alone at the Riverhead train station to watch an engine switch freight cars in a small freight yard across from the station that is still there today. This was about Back then the Riverhead station was a safe place to leave kids. The last time that I remember seeing a steam engine was in Dad took my brother and me to ride elevated trains in Brooklyn. We took the LIRR from Mineola to where I don t know, but we had a good time. On the way back our LIRR train stopped about a quarter mile from the Mineola station. Our train was diesel powered. While we were stopped a steam engine went by westbound. It went by in a flash. That was the last time I remember seeing a steam engine on the LIRR. By the way we got off the train and had to walk to the Mineola station. Hopefully this year at Railfest at Riverhead they will have their little narrow gauge tank engine fired up. The younger generation can see and experience the feel and sound of live steam again. In the meantime I play with my garden railway trains. Can t Make A Meeting? To ensure that a voting quorum is reached, and an official meeting held, pleas send a signed proxy form to any of the club officers or the Board of Directors. A link to a printable copy of the proxy form can be found on the home page of the LIGRS website. Page 3

4 Chic Chat Corner This years Memorial Day weekend we took a great train trip (we being Mike & Kathleen Kmeth and Bob & Louise Sewall). We met at Penn Station, took Amtrak to D.C., got off that train and watched as the Dover Harbor (a private car) was attached to the back. Once it was ready for passengers we got on and rode to Roanoke, VA; while being served a delicious dinner, cooked in the galley of the car. For more information go to The Star City Special trip included 3 nights in the huge, lovely, restored Hotel Roanoke as well as guided walking tours of the Roanoke Transportation Museum and the O. Winston Link museum. (He was a famous photographer who specialized in night photos, many of steam trains.) Also a bus tour the next day which stopped at the Bedford Welcome Center, The National D Day Memorial, The Peaks of Otter Lodge (for brunch) and the Peaks of Otter Winery for a wine tasting. On the Monday after Memorial Day we again boarded the Dover Harbor and were served brunch and later on, a light lunch on the ride back to D.C.. Upon arriving there we walked through to the Amtrak business car for our trip back to Penn Station. The LIRR then took us back to our respective home towns. We have so many memories and photos that they can t all be included in this month s article. We will have to continue next month. Dover Harbor being pushed toward the back of the Amtrak train. Amtrak staff preparing to couple us up. Pre-dinner snacks. Note the lamp which is a copy of those used on the Orient Express. Page 4
