TO LEARN WHAT WE COULD ABOUT THE STATE THAT WAS ALLOWED IN THE USA AT 100 YEARS. HENCE THE CENTENNIAL STATE.. SHE ENTERED THE UNION IN 1876.

3 THE COLORADO STATE CAPITOL BUILDING The Colorado State Capitol Building, located at 200 East Colfax Avenue in Denver, CO. is the home of the Colorado General Assembly and the offices of the Governor & Lt Governor. The building is intentionally reminiscent of the U. S. Capitol. Constructed in the 1890s from Colorado white granite, and opened for use in November The distinctive gold dome consists of real Gold Leaf, first added in 1908, commemorating the Colorado Gold Rush. The building is part of Denver's Civic Center area. It was listed on the National Register Historic Places as part of the Civic Center Historic District in 1974, and became part of the Denver Civic Center National Historic Landmark District in Serving as the beginning of the Capitol Hill district, the historic building sits slightly higher than the rest of downtown Denver. The main entrance hall is open 180 feet to the top of the dome, about the height of an 18-story building. Additionally, the official elevation of Denver is measured outside the west entrance to the building, a more accurate measurement was made with modern means, and the 13th step was identified as being one mile high, where a marker was installed. The interior of the building uses copious amounts of Colorado Rose Onyx, a rare rose marble from a quarry near Beulah, CO. The amount used in the building consumed the entire known supply. White Yule Marble from the quarries near Marble, CO. was also used throughout the capitol for the floors. Many of the windows are Stained Glass, depicting people or events related to the History of Colorado. The halls are decorated with portraits of every U. S. President.

9 EMILY GRIFFITH Emily Griffith Technical College is a public (Vocational) technical college in downtown Denver. Founded by Emily Griffith in 1916 as Opportunity School, it was renamed in her honor in The school is affiliated with Denver Public Schools, offering an alternative high school program, and is part of the Colorado Community College System. Denver educator Emily Griffith ( ) shared her dream of opening a school to serve people of all ages and interests with a Denver Post features writer in Following its publication, she persuaded the Post and local trolley cars to promote the idea. In May 1916, Griffith received a closed School building at 13th and Welton Streets from the Denver Board of Education. Opportunity School opened on September 9, Ms. Griffith was only expecting 20 to 30 new students. However, well over a 1000 people appeared to register. This caused the Board of Education to Wake Up. By 1954, the school served 10,000 students annually and had over 400,000 alumni. PUBLIC TELEVISION OF DENVER signed on January 30, 1956 from a studio in an auto body shop at the school. Courses also changed with the needs of the community, adding more ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE and health care courses and closing OBSOLETE programs. TO WIT: Shoe repair is no longer taught.. Barrel making is no longer taught. Old lathe and machine units have been discarded and new Computer Operated units installed. Funding from Denver Public Schools gradually declined over the years, leading the school to begin charging Denver residents tuition in 1991.The College operates across three campuses. The main campus, located at 1860 Lincoln Street in Denver, houses many of the school's Continuing Technical Education (CTE) programs, along with Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes for those seeking their GED, as well as the English Language Acquisition (ELA, also known as ESL) programs. A second campus at 1261 Glenarm Place houses the College of Trades and Industry, while a third campus at 200 E. 9th Ave. houses the Video Production and Editing Program All of this started because a woman educator saw a need in the community for vocational technical training. NO, SHE NEVER MET MARK TWAIN OR HIS FAMILY: THEY WERE A GENERATION APART. WE KNOW, OF COURSE, THAT HOLLYWOOD AND BROADWAY GAVE HER THE NAME OF MOLLY.. THAT SHE WAS ABLE TO SURVIVE THE TITANIC IS ALL BECAUSE OF MONEY AND PRIVILEGE. THAT SIMPLE.. NEVERTHELESS: AFTERWARDS SHE WAS KNOWN AS: THE UNSINKABLE MOLLY BROWN. SHE IS MARKETED AS SUCH TODAY. YES, SHE WAS DIFFERENT AND DID ENJOY WHAT MONEY WOULD DO FOR HER AND HER MANY PHILANTHROPIC CAUSES. THIS IS WHY WE WANTED TO TAKE THIS TOUR The Molly Brown House Museum (also known as House of Lions) is a house located at 1340 Pennsylvania Street in DENVER that was the home of American philanthropist, socialite, and activist Margaret Brown. Brown was known as "The Unsinkable Molly Brown" because she survived the sinking of the RMS Titanic. The museum now located in her former home presents exhibits interpreting her life and that of Victorian Denver as well as architectural preservation. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in The house was built in the 1880s, incorporating several popular styles of the period, includingqueen Ann Style Architecture. The panic of 1893 caused the house to be for sale and it was purchased by James Joseph Brown, (J.J.), Margaret's husband, in 1894 for US $30,000. The title was transferred to Margaret in 1898, possibly due to J.J.'s deteriorating health. Margaret and the family traveled a lot of the time, and so the house was rented out. In 1902, it was the governor's mansion for the Governor of Colorado and his family. During the Depression, Margaret was forced to turn it into a boarding house under the supervision of her housekeeper. It was also during the Depression that the house was sold after Margaret's death in 1932, for $6, No photos were allowed because of little light and the size of the tours.

ALL WERE GOOD LOOKING, BUT JUST HAD TATTOOS.

32 OUR TOUR STARTED AT 2:30 SO WE WENT TO EAT LUNCH DOWN THE STREET. WE WERE TOLD TO GO TO JELLY S... WE HAD A VERY GOOD LUNCH THAT WE SHARED. SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT: WE WERE THE OLDEST PEOPLE IN THE PLACE.. WE WERE THE ONLY ONES WITHOUT TATTOOS... ALL WERE YOUNG PEOPLE. ALL WERE GOOD LOOKING, BUT JUST HAD TATTOOS... IT IS PART OF THE DENVER CULTURE FOR THE YOUNG PEOPLE IN THIS CITY. WE SHARED A MOLLY HOT BROWN AND A RUBEN SANDWICH AND THEN HAD DONUT BITES.. MUCH FUN AND GOOD FOOD!

33 WE WALKED BACK AND TOOK THE TOUR.. NO PHOTOS, BUT WE GOT POST CARDS AND TOOK PHOTOS OF THEM.. IT IS A VERY POPULAR TOUR AND WELL WORTH TAKING... JUST TO SEE THE HOUSE..

37 WE THEN DROVE OVER TO THE SCIENCE CENTER TO SEE THE 5:30 SHOWING OF THE IMAX 3D MOVIE OF THE 100 YEAR CELEBRATION OF THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE. IF YOU ARE A CLIMBING, PERSON YOU SHOULD SEE THIS HISTORY PIECE. IT ADDRESSES CLIMBING OF MANY OF THE MONUMENTS AND ALSO FROZEN WATER FALLS. IT IS SURE SOMETHING TO SEE.. OF COURSE IT TELLS THE HISTORY OF THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE AND ALL OF ITS GLORY WE GOT HOME AT 8PM.. THIS HAS BEEN A VERY FULL DAY.. WE HAVE ANOTHER ONE TOMORROW. MUST GET SLEEP FRIDAY 8TH JULY DAY 7 VJ S HUMBLE ABODE HARRISON STREET THORNTON, CO TODAY IS THE DAY TO GO NORTH.. WE LEFT AT 08:30. THIS WILL BE A VERY FULL DAY AND IS ONE WE HAVE KIND OF PLANNED TO DO.. WE WILL GO TO THE CITY OF ESTES PARK AND THEN, PERHAPS, TO ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK JUST TO SEE WHAT WE CAN SEE HISTORY BY DON ALLEN LEOTA JEAN & ESTES PARK. I THINK IT WAS THE SUMMERS OF 1958, & 1959 that Leota Jean had a job at THE STANLEY HOTEL as a room maid, etc. She talked about it often: about how she learned to make beds and clean a room fast. This was a great experience for her. She always talked about how very pretty the area was. For some reason, during our 50 years together we never once thought about going to Estes Park. It was just part of her early life and that was it. Yes, it was a good part.. Somewhere she had some black and white photos of her time here. She did share one time with me about the Bar and how long and pretty it was.. She was sure not wrong. It was as she described it.

42 THE STANLEY HOTEL The Stanley Hotel is a 140-room Colonial Revival hotel in Estes Park, CO. The Stanley offers panoramic views of Lake Estes & the Rockies. It was built by Freelan Oscar (F.O.) Stanley of Stanley Steamer fame and opened on July 4, 1909, catering to the American Upper Class at the turn of the century. The hotel and its surrounding structures are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, it includes a restaurant, spa, and bed-andbreakfast and provides guided tours which feature the history and activity of the site.

ALL IS WELL.. LIFE IS GOOD! LOVE IS BETTER! WE LOOKED AT ALL OF THIS, AND THEN THE CLOCK, AND DECIDED WE HAD SEEN ENOUGH HILLS, MOUNTAINS, TREES AND RUNNING WATER.
