1 POST SHOW REPORT
2 The seventh edition of LAAD Latin America Aero and Defence was held at Rio de Janeiro s Riocentro convention centre at an important time for the defence and security industry in Brazil, as it was the first event following approval of the National Defence Strategy. LAAD 2009 was attended by 18,200 people, 336 exhibitors, both record numbers, and 93 Brazilian exhibitors, showing the strength of the national industry. In Latin America the buzz is asymmetric warfare: Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and drugs traffickers were the epitome of this. Asymmetric warfare has become increasingly important in the eyes of Latin American Government security strategists. In recognition of LAAD s importance, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva visited the show and the Brazilian defence minister, accompanied by the commanding officers of all three armed forces, held meetings with exhibitors and delegations. Important contracts were announced during the event. The highlight was Embraer, which won contracts for a total of US$1.44 billion to develop and modernise aircraft for the Brazilian Air Force and Navy. The 2009 confirmed LAAD s significance as an indispensable debating forum and a place for presenting the state of the art in defence and security technology.
