1 Side events and workshops that Stakeholder Forum organised and participated in in the lead up to, and during, Rio+20 Government retreat on IFSD Stakeholder Forum organised a government retreat on February with UN DESA and the government of Indonesia. The focus was on the Institutional Framework of Sustainable Development (IFSD) one of the two themes of Rio+20 with a particular focus on the proposed Council for Sustainable Development. The retreat was viewed as a direct follow up to the Solo meeting in Stakeholder Forum organised the authorship of several papers including setting up the programme. UN DESA provided staff for taking minutes. Approximately 60 missions were represented. For a detailed overview of the programme and the aims of the retreat, please see here. Global Transition 2012 dialogue on the New Economy On March , Stakeholder Forum held a two day workshop to bring together civil society actors to focus on practical and implementable approaches to the green economy, cluster around some of the proposed sustainable development goals/priority areas, and develop thinking on how a transition to an economy that supports wellbeing, equality, and operates within environmental limits can be achieved. The workshop was held a Pace University in New York and attracted close to 150 participants, with representatives from some 40 missions present. For a detailed programme, see here. Promoting sustainable cities planning in the Rio+20 context On March , Stakeholder Forum organised a special event in collaboration with the Swedish Mission on promoting sustainable cities planning in the Rio+20 context. The event was an informal brainstorming session, which led to future meetings on the issue of governance and sustainable cities. 20 people participated. The Role of Civil Society/Major Groups in a future Sustainable Development Council and UN Environment Organization This side event held on March was a collaboration between CIVICUS, NGLS and Stakeholder Forum and aimed to address the following question: What mechanisms could enable more effective civil society engagement in the post-rio+20 institutional framework on sustainable development? Over the years questions have been raised about the representation, participation and accountability of Major Groups in informing, implementing and monitoring intergovernmental policy-making. To improve the multi-stakeholder process, a number of organisations have looked at best practices of public participation in other multilateral bodies, as well as civil society proposals not yet implemented. The Major Group organising partners, civil society experts and government delegates met in a roundtable discussion on proposals to advance multi-stakeholder engagement in global sustainable development

2 governance. Stakeholder Forum provided one of the keynote presentations, with respondents from the US and French governments. 120 people participated. Ombudspersons for Future Generations: a proposal for Rio+20 Side event held on March in collaboration with the World Future Council. 60 people participated. Major Groups Expert Meeting on the Rio+20 Zero Draft and Compendium of Commitments A one-day workshop held on Saturday March in collaboration with CIVICUS and IBON. The objective of the day was for representatives of the Major Groups to report on their positions based upon their proposed amendments to the Zero Draft and engage in a dialogue with selected Member States and UN officials in preparation for a meeting of all Major Groups and Member States at the Third Intersessional Meeting for UNCSD. Taking into consideration the results of the informal-informal negotiations, the Major Groups were asked to identify converging priorities, commitments, partnerships and initiatives, particularly as they relate to the Green Economy in the Context of Sustainable Development and Poverty Eradication, including key thematic cross-sectoral issues. The proposed aim of the workshop was to arrive at a catalogue of commitments which the Major Groups could agree on in principle. Close to 100 people participated in the full day event. Participants were invited to continue the discussion on the theme of the Institutional Framework for Sustainable Development (IFSD) at a workshop on Sunday, 25 March, at the Church Centre for the United Nations. Improving the Institutional Framework for Sustainable Development - A deep dive into governance issues and the Rio+20 Zero Draft A full day workshop held on Sunday 25 March and hosted by Stakeholder Forum in collaboration with UNDESA and UNEP. The objective was to provide a venue for dialogue on ambitious and visionary outcomes on the second theme of the conference strengthening the Institutional Framework for Sustainable Development to make Rio+20 a success. Approximately 70 people participated. For a detailed programme, see here. Dialogue on a convention for corporate social responsibility and accountability Side event held on 26 March 2012 and organised by Stakeholder Forum in collaboration with Vitae Civilis, Brazil and the Aviva Group. Feedback was highly positive from both partners and participants, and the outputs of the event were clearly understood. Approximately 120 people participated. Sharing real-life, practical experiences from civil society, business and government of implementing One Planet Living action plans and roadmaps that can deliver a fair and green economy Side event held on 27 March 2012 in collaboration with Bioregional Sustainable Solutions for Rio+20 and IIED. Stakeholder Forum chaired the meeting, with introductions from the

3 Secretary General of IIED, Ms. Toulmin, the Permanent Representative of Nepal; the SDG coordinator from Colombia, Ms. Paula Caballero, and Ms. Sue Riddlestone, Director, Bio Regional. Approximately 100 people participated. Building a Good Foundation - Developing the post-2015 development framework what role for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)? This side event, held on April , was organised by Beyond 2015 and Stakeholder Forum and chaired by Corinne Woods, Director, UN Millennium Campaign. The event heard different perspectives from civil society, Member States and UN actors on the inclusion of sustainability in the post-2015 development framework. In the ensuing discussion, participants addressed: the role of the private sector; integrating planetary boundaries into the SDGs; and concern that human rights principles are not being recognised. Challenges of IFSD Stakeholder Forum, together with UNEP, organised a full day workshop on the Challenges of IFSD on Sunday 29 April s included key people from UNEP and UN DESA, several country missions and civil society. The workshop shed light on a number of governance issues relating to the Rio+20 process. Some 120 people participated throughout the day. For a detailed programme see here. How can you enable One Planet Living for your citizens embracing all of the ten principles? On 30 April 2012, Stakeholder Forum chaired and facilitated a half day meeting held by Bioregional on the issue of implementation of SDG s at a national level, using One Planet Living as a transferable example. 75 people participated. Special meeting on Rio+20 commitments This meeting was held on 2 May 2012 and organised by the Rio+20 Secretariat and NRDC at the Ford Foundation. Stakeholder Forum was asked to make a substantive intervention. Close to 90 people were present.
