1 WANGKA Beneficiaries Newsletter Edition 2 May/June 2014 Inside this edition General Meeting 2014: In pictures New IBN office opens in Karratha IBN staff at the opening our new Karratha office CEO s Comment Thanarru! It s been a busy few months at IBN. Our General Meeting, I hope you will agree, went well. We are now in the process of changing IBN to allocate the Financial Assistance Trust (FAT) funds into the new Direct Benefits Trusts (language group-based trusts). While this sounds like an easy thing to do, I m afraid it isn t. At the General Meeting we talked about rebalancing whereby we would allocate the next few payments 60 per cent to the Charitable Assistance Trust and 40 per cent to the new Direct Benefits Trusts. To speed this up we have been trying to get BHPB to defer the most recent payment. Unfortunately we haven t been able to do this because it is quite an extensive legal exercise, and needs the Banyjima PBC, as well as IBN and BHPB to sign off. YMAC needs to call a meeting of the PBC, which will take a bit of time, before they can get instructions, so we haven t made it in time for this payment. We hope to have everything finalised within 3 months. To achieve this there will need to be full meetings of the Banyjima PBC, and the Yinhawangka and Nyiyaparli Claim Groups. IBN has asked YMAC to start planning for this. In the meantime there is approximately $10 million left in the Financial Assistance Trust (FAT). The Representative Corporations have met to discuss the changes needed to allow for tax-free distributions from this trust. This was something everyone voted on at the General Meeting. IBN has asked the Representative Corporations to sign Deeds of Amendments. When this has been done the Board will consider a distribution. Once the new trusts are finalised we will be able to focus on providing more help from the Charitable Assistance Trust. Other exciting developments at IBN include the official opening of our new Karratha office; which included a very moving Welcome to Country from Ngarluma man, Patrick Churnside. Patrick sang three songs in Ngarluma, each one describing the borders of his country. It was a heartfelt experience and a great start for our new office, and our team there, Danny Brown and Denise Dann. Our other big event this month was the ground breaking ceremony to officially launch construction of a purpose built retirement development for elders in South Hedland. There is more about this exciting project later in the newsletter. We will soon announce the appointment of a dedicated IBN Nurse for the Tom Price area, and we are finalising the purchase of a property that will become our long-awaited Perth Hostel. I think you ll be very happy with the property we have found, though it will need some renovations before people can start staying there. I hope this IBN Wangka finds you and your families well and happy. As always, I look forward to hearing your thoughts about how to make IBN better. 2 General Meeting 2014: IN PICTURES IBN held our General Meeting on March 29 and 30 in South Hedland. A summary of what was discussed can be found in the CEO s Comment and on the IBN website. Some important decisions were made during the two days and we look forward to the next opportunity we all have to get together. Below is a selection of pictures from the meeting Enjoy! New Staff Meet Annie the IBN Linguist Keeping culture strong through language Today the Yinhawangka, Banyjima and Nyiyaparli languages are regarded by linguists as being some of the most endangered languages on the planet. With the extinction of a language an entire culture can be lost. Annie is here to help the IBN Community record, share and teach their traditional languages and stories. IBN is the only Aboriginal organisation in the Pilbara to have a linguist dedicated the recording and preservation of the traditional languages and stories of its members. Maintaining and teaching language is important in helping our young people remain strong in their Aboriginal culture and history. Annie is based at the Wangka Maya Aboriginal Language Centre in South Hedland, and would like to work with the IBN Community in three key areas: Recording of family histories, stories and song. This can be in form of voice recordings, video or film. Developing language books and other learning aids to teach younger generations about their traditional language. Creating opportunities for kids to learn about their culture through camps, visits to country and using traditional language in everyday life. Annie will be visiting Wakathuni and Bellary Springs communities soon. Annie will be setting up an Elders Reference Group to help guide her work. If you would like to be part of this group, or get involved in any of the three areas above please contact Annie, on or ibnlinguist@wangkamaya.org.au MORE PICTURES FROM THE GENERAL MEETING IBN Wangka Beneficiaries Newsletter May/June 2014 IBN Wangka Beneficiaries Newsletter May/June
3 Important information from the Community Programs team. Do you need travel? Travel applications need to lodged at least three working days before you travel, else we may not be able to process your application in time. Need an application form? All application forms can be found at: I VE DODGED SO MANY BULLETS. MY MATE GOT PUT IN JAIL FOR DEALING. I WAS SUPPOSED TO BE WITH HIM AND IF I HAD THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN ME. What s happening at CLINTON COOKE IBN Services? From Evelyn Kroczek, Team Leader, IBN Services. IBN Services, part of IBN s Work Ready Program to get people skilled and back into the workforce, is growing fast since we started last July. We now have eight IBN people employed full time at our Wedgefield yard. They have been working hard getting the native plant nursery up and running, renovating the training room and doing yard clean ups around Port Hedland. The crew has a pre-start meeting each morning to talk about the day s work and complete a Daily Task Sheet each afternoon. There have been no reported accidents or near misses and feedback from the crew has been positive. Since getting our name about town we have picked up several large commercial contracts to supply native plants. The biggest so far is to supply seeds to John Holland for the North West Highway restoration and rehabilitation project. The crew started mixing the seeds this month with river sand (pictured) ready for dispatch to John Holland. We are also looking at supplying vegetable seedlings to the Town of Port Hedland Community Projects. We are building a veggie garden that will eventually be big enough to provide fresh vegetables to IBN people too. The crew will soon start a Certificate II at the Pilbara Institute. This qualification covers White Card, Irrigation, Chemicals, Senior First Aid, Using hand and power tools and equipment, Measurements and Fire Extinguisher Training. A FRESH START AT A DRUG FREE LIFE. CLINTON S STORY. The work at IBN Services is always varied and that keeps it interesting. We have a strong bond in our team and as things get bigger and busier we will keep employing even more IBN people. Join IBN Services If you are currently unemployed and looking to get back into the workforce contact Kristy McIntosh, Field Officer, on or kmcintosh@ibngroup.com.au Uniforms and transport to and from the Wedgefield yard is provided. IBN Services has a new website. Visit for the latest news and job opportunities Yinhawangka man, Clinton Cooke, has been given a second chance at a drug free life thanks to IBN and the Fresh Start Recovery Program. After years of amphetamine, cannabis and alcohol abuse losing his job was the last straw for Clinton and his young family. I arrived at Fresh Start on December 5 and felt lost, said Clinton. It was the hardest thing to leave my kids. I felt like a bad father leaving them at Christmas but I knew it was the right thing to do. I had to start again. With help from IBN Field Officer, Chris Klitzing, Clinton spent three months on the Fresh Start Recovery Program in Northam and has now stopped using drugs and alcohol. Clinton is a guy who took the opportunity to change his thinking, said Chris. He came back from the Fresh Start Program an entirely different person. I walked to the South Hedland Shopping Centre with Clinton and about half a dozen people stopped him and told him well done and three of them told him to contact them for work when he is ready. Clinton lost direction and thought he could deal with his bad feelings with alcohol and hard drugs; he nearly lost his kids and his life. Clinton s is now back in Hedland and working full time for PLWA and encourages others to seek help if they need it. There is help available. If you need help get it. Who knows what would have happened if I didn t? I d probably be in jail or dead. If you or a family member have drug or alcohol problems contact IBN on and ask to speak to an IBN Field Officer. 4 IBN Wangka Beneficiaries Newsletter May/June 2014 IBN Wangka Beneficiaries Newsletter May/June
4 Health Focus: Did you know that Influenza can be life threatening? Health information from the IBN Nurse, Dorothea Skelly. Influenza, commonly known as flu, is highly contagious and can cause death. The flu is more severe than a bad cold for a few different reasons Cold symptoms last from two to a few days, whereas the flu can last up to a week The flu causes a high fever, whereas a cold sometimes causes only a mild fever Muscular pains and shivering attacks occur with the flu, but not with a cold Colds cause a runny nose, while the flu usually starts with a dry sensation in the nose and throat. Who is most at risk? People aged 65 and over Pregnant women (at any stage of pregnancy) Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 15 years and over People aged six months with asthma and people at any age suffering from obesity, diabetes, and alcoholism or kidney disease. Some symptoms of flu High fever, chills and sweating Sore throat, headache and general muscle and joint pains and a dry cough. Treatment of flu Stay in bed and rest until your body temperature has been in the normal range for 48 hours Drink enough fluids to maintain normal urine output Take paracetamol to control fever, aches and pains and early use of antiviral medication may shorten the length and severity of illness Avoid exposure to dust, alcohol, fumes and tobacco smoke. NEW OFFICE OPENS IN Karratha The opening of our new Karratha office started with a very moving, and powerful Welcome to Country performed by Ngarluma man, Patrick Churnside (pictured above left). Patrick told the story of his country using song and boomerangs. The ribbon was cut by Sharon Black (pictured above centre) from the Banyjima language group. IBN staff from Hedland travelled to Karratha for the day to celebrate this special event with local service providers, IBN members and the new Karratha team, Danny Brown, Team Leader (pictured directly above) and Denise Dann, Field Officer. This is the third IBN office to open in the Pilbara and we hope that it will make it easier for the IBN Community to access our services and get help when they need it. IBN breaks new ground on retirement development in South Hedland The first sod was officially turned earlier this month by Minister Brendon Gryll s, MLA, Member for the Pilbara, and Banyjima elder, Ronnie Roy (pictured above) to mark the start of construction of a purpose built retirement development for IBN elders in South Hedland. With assistance from Minister Gryll s, IBN secured the land on Limpet Crescent as part of our commitment to addressing the need for affordable and suitable housing for the IBN Community in the Pilbara. Designed in consultation with IBN elders, the purpose built development will feature kangaroo pits and wheelchair friendly bathrooms. The facility will provide six 2 bedroom 2 bathroom units and caretakers accommodation. Due for completion in early 2015, the units will be allocated according to need. For more information about this project contact Michelle Holthouse, Field Officer,on For more information or advice please contact the IBN Nurse, Dorothea Skelly, on or Keep an eye on the IBN website for Dorothea s free health clinic dates and locations Contact the IBN Karratha office 7/18 Hedland Place, Karratha (located behind Woolworths) Phone: Fax: Open Monday to Friday 8:30am - 4:30pm 6 IBN Wangka Beneficiaries Newsletter May/June 2014 IBN Wangka Beneficiaries Newsletter May/June
