3 INFORMATION Group Tours Habti Voyages has been organising the highest quality group tours for generations and over that time we have built a deep understanding of the key ingredients to an enjoyable tour. These include well-planned and paced itineraries, expert guidance on the ground, enough free time to do your own thing and, not least, the company of like-minded travellers. For those seeking a premium touring experience, comparing like with like, Habti Voyages tours offer superb value for money. Tour Features Small group sizes: To enhance your enjoyment of the tour, we like to keep our groups small and manageable. Therefore numbers are normally restricted to a maximum of 26 people. International flights: Our tour prices do not include international flights. the price. Where possible the entrance fees are also covered. All our excursions benefit from experienced local drivers and guides, and in some cases this is the tour manager. Meals: The meals we include are shown on each day of the itinerary. Generally, our group tours include breakfast daily and often some other meals. Our tours are not generally all-inclusive, allowing you to choose when, where and what to eat, rather than being limited to buffets and set menus. Flexibility: If you would like to add on extra days at the start or end of a tour, we are delighted to organise extensions, however simple or complicated. For most tours, we have suggested some ideas in this brochure. We are also flexible about flights. If you would prefer to start your journey from a regional airport then your Habti Voyages tour consultant will be able to advise you on the options. If you would prefer to organise your own flights and join a tour on a land-only basis your tour consultant will be able to provide a price for you. accommodation where available, or the best alternative elsewhere. Standard: Simpler in emphasis, these itineraries typically feature 4-star or good 3-star accommodation throughout, or the best alternative elsewhere. Discovery: This type of tour is best suited to the hardier traveller as it will typically include some quite basic accommodation, possibly longer and rougher road journeys and, in some cases, more strenuous activities, such as trekking. Experienced tour managers: Habti Voyages tours are accompanied from arrival in the Morocco by an experienced local English-speaking tour manager, unless stated otherwise. Habti Voyages uses local tour managers because their local knowledge and contacts mean they are best equipped to ensure the smooth running of the tour. Accommodation: All the hotel nights, as well as nights on board trains and boats where applicable, are included in the tour price. Excursions: All the sightseeing excursions described in the tour itineraries are included in Tour Categories Habti Voyages tours fall into one of four categories, based on the level of comfort you can expect on a tour, as described below. As with the suggested itineraries, these private tours can also be tailored as much or as little as you like, except those days based on river cruises or rail journeys, which have fixed itineraries. 7 MOROCCO Discover Morocco Spice market, Marrakech Historical medina, Rabat Rabat Modern capital & ancient port Roman ruins at Chellah Clifftop Kasbah The capital of Morocco, modern Rabat is a planned city of wide boulevards, handsome public buildings and landscaped gardens on the Atlantic coastal plain, at the mouth of the river Bou Regreg. Behind this modern facade is a long history, traces of which can still be seen. The river port was first colonised by the Carthaginians and then by the Romans. Evidence of their rule remains at Chellah, or Sala Colonia, where a complex of ancient ruins sits on the riverside. The tranquil alleys of the Kasbah des Oudaias are also well worth a visit to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and for superb views of the river and ocean. Marrakech Buzzing activity in Djemaa el Fna square Stay in a traditional riad Set against the magnificent backdrop of the Atlas mountains, Marrakech s walled medina is a maze of narrow alleyways lined with medieval buildings. The skyline is dominated by the Koutoubia minaret, built in the 12th century and part of a large mosque complex. At the heart of the city, the famous Djemaa el Fna market square is a frenzy of colour and activity, akin to a carnival. Riads provide comfortable, often luxurious accommodation in converted, traditional Moroccan houses. 8 MOROCCO Fez & Meknes Medieval atmosphere of Fez Meknes, imperial capital of Moulay Ismail Home to one of the oldest universities in the world, Fez is considered to be the intellectual capital and most imperial of Morocco s cities, famed for its labyrinthine souks where traditional craft techniques are still practised. The tanneries of Fez are a major highlight; from the terraces above you can watch the centuries-old process of treating cowhide in huge vats of dye, then visit the leather shops to see the product of such hard work. To the west of Fez, Meknes is a sprawling and prosperous provincial town, cut in two by the wide river valley of the Oued Boufekrane. Monuments from its past, dominated by the extraordinary creations of Moulay Ismail, justify a day s rambling exploration, as do the varied and busy souks of its medina. Casablanca Hassan II mosque, Casablanca Cosmopolitan ambience Immense Hassan II mosque The largest city in Morocco, Casablanca s centre is impressive, with large boulevards and tall, white, well-kept buildings. The old city, a much smaller area with older houses and a lively market, is reminiscent of the Casablanca of Bergman and Bogart. Make sure to pass by Hassan II mosque; the largest mosque in Morocco and Africa, it commands an impressive position at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. Casablanca s medina, constructed in the medieval period, is the oldest and most characterful part of the city, its maze of alleyways creating an ambience more akin to that of a European town. At its north-east corner is the impressive restored clock tower and the old city s main Friday mosque, Chleuh. Facing the port on the north side are the remaining ruins of Casablanca s 18th-century fortifications. Gateway to the medina, Fez A suggested itinerary... 9 MOROCCO Essaouira Essaouira Coastal retreat & crafts centre Boat trips to the Iles Purpuraires to see Eleanora s falcons Essaouira is a delightful fishing town with fine sandy beaches. Less than 2 hours drive from Marrakech, it makes for a popular day excursion for those who want to relax in beautiful calm surroundings. Many of the boutique properties are located within the old city ramparts, where the small narrow streets are filled with craft shops selling ceramics, leather products and jewellery. In the mornings, the harbour is a hive of activity, with fishing boats unloading their catches. The freshly caught fish are smoked at an outdoor fish grill at the port end of Place Moulay Hassan. Just off the coast are the Îles Purpuraires. Both the Phoenicians and the Romans left their mark here, exploiting the islands for their natural resources. Today, the islands are a sanctuary for Eleanora s falcons. The Atlas Mountains Atlas mountains Scenic hikes Fertile Ourika valley Lavish stays in converted kasbahs The highest mountain range in North Africa, the High Atlas has many fertile valleys, snow covered peaks, rivers and waterfalls. Approximately one hour s drive from Marrakech, the Atlas can be visited as a day trip or part of a longer itinerary. There are some fabulous walks available in the region, through local villages or into the hills. Within the foothills of the Atlas mountains, the lush Ourika valley also makes an excellent day trip from Marrakech, with olive groves, citrus tree orchards, willows and poplar trees covering the slopes. Mount Toubkal, the highest mountain in North Africa at 4,167 metres, can be climbed by beginners with a good level of fitness on a 5-day trip from Marrakech. 10 MOROCCO Ouarzazate Gateway to the Sahara desert Nearby fortified city of Ait Benhaddou Spectacular scenery at Todra gorge Ouarzazate is situated south of the High Atlas mountains on the edge of the Sahara desert and is an ideal departure point into the Draa valley and through the desert to the town of Zagora. The drive is a scenic one, with a sense of history exuded by the many slowly crumbling kasbahs. Close to Ouarzazate is the Unesco-listed Ait Benhaddou, a fortified city that is restored each year as the rains wash away the traditional mud-brick buildings and walls. Also nearby is the picturesque Todra gorge, carved out by the Todra and Dades rivers. Its dramatic cliffs and spectacular riverbed make it a popular spot for picnics and short hikes. Agadir New medina, Agadir Dynamic city & seaside resort Mild climate all year Ait Benhaddou, Ouarzazate Atlas Film Studios Atlas Film Studios on the outskirts of Ouarzazate is the world s largest film studio, covering more than 30,000 sq metres of impressive desert and mountain settings. The location was first used in British director David Lean s 1962 classic Lawrence of Arabia. The studios weren t actually built until 1983 and have since grown to become Morocco s very own Hollywood, where scenes from epic films and television series such as Star Wars, the Bond film The Living Daylights, Gladiator and, more recently, scenes from Game of Thrones have been filmed. Located on the Atlantic coast, Agadir has become increasing popular in recent years due to its mild winter climate, good beaches and luxury spa resorts. Its 10km-long sandy beach receives more than 300 days of sunshine every year. The winding coastal road has been developed providing a popular place for a walk along the seafront and affording panoramic views of the whole bay. The old kasbah, destroyed in 1960 by an earthquake, today offers an elevated view of the bay, the port and the new town while the delightful new medina, constructed just south of the city centre in the 1990s using traditional Berber techniques, is a beautiful space with artisan workshops, a museum, peaceful plazas and picturesque residences. If you re up early, watch the fishermen unload huge tuna fish, groupers and hammerhead sharks, followed by the morning auction of fish and lobster at the port entrance. A suggested itinerary...
