8 Day 06 DRAKENSBERG MOUNTAINS BATTLEFIELDS Drive to Fugitives Drift Guest House. Fugitives Drift Guest House 1 x Standard Room on a Full Board basis for 2-nights Established by the renowned historian and orator David Rattray, this spectacular property is situated on a National Heritage Site and overlooks the battlefields of both Isandlwana and Rorke s Drift. Tours to the battlefield sites are led by some of South Africa s finest guides. Cottages have large, en-suite bedrooms that are individually decorated and all have private verandahs with sweeping views of the reserve and surrounding battlefields. The guest house boasts a sparkling pool that overlooks Isandlwana and the indigenous bushveld. Superb food and personal service are a feature of this outstanding facility. As well as morning and afternoon Battlefield tours, you can enjoy a nature drive or horse riding on the estate or a guided walk to the historic site of Fugitives Drift. 10 Day 07 BATTLEFIELDS Morning Fugitives' Drift Lodge s Isandlwana Tour This morning you will depart from the Guest house listening to a tape narrated by David Rattray playing in the vehicle explaining the background to the Anglo-Zulu War. The Battle of Isandlwana, 22 nd January 1879 was a huge Zulu victory and this morning you will discover the events that led up to the crushing defeat of the British army here. The lecture on the battlefield begins at 09:45 until around 11:45, when tea, coffee and refreshments are served. The lecture takes place half way up the hill. Another tape, this time describing the story of the survivors and events after the battle of Isandlwana, is played en-route back to the Guest House, returning for lunch at around 13:00. Afternoon Fugitives' Drift Lodge s Rorke's Drift Tour This afternoon you will head back out to the battlefields, this time to Rorke s Drift. The battle of Rorke s Drift on the 22 nd January 1879 is a story of incredible bravery in the face of impossible odds. It was here that a small group of soldiers and wounded held off a huge number of Zulu warriors. For their bravery 11 Victoria Crosses were awarded, the most to be awarded in any single battle. Your tour departs at around 15:00 and you will have time to look through the museum at Rorke s Drift before the lecture begins at 16:00. There is very little walking involved. The lecture concludes around 18:00 and you are then given the opportunity to look around the memorials and graveyard before returning to the Guest House. 10

11 Day 08 BATTLEFIELDS HLUHLUWE GAME RESERVE Drive to Hluhluwe Game Reserve and your safari camp. Hilltop Camp 1 x 2 Bed Chalet on a Dinner, Bed & Breakfast basis for 3-nights The award-winning Hilltop Camp situated on the summit of a forest hill, in the Hluhluwe Game Reserve, offers fine views of the surrounding countryside. The camp is the oldest in KwaZulu-Natal, and has a variety of accommodation from a luxury lodge to a variety of superbly appointed self-catering accommodation facilities. This area includes a restaurant, an attractive pub and lounge decorated with photographs and memorabilia of the history of Hluhluwe, as well as a gift shop and convenience store. The Mpunyane Restaurant offers a full English buffet breakfast every day. Lunches from Monday to Saturday are a la carte and on Sundays a hot and cold buffet. Dinners are either a hot and cold buffet or a traditional braai (barbecue) depending on the weather. Dinner arrangements do change according to guest profiles and holidays. 13 Days HLUHLUWE GAME RESERVE Set in the heart of Zululand, the oldest game reserve in Africa where Zulu kings such as Dingiswayo and Shaka hunted and put in place the first conservation laws. Today the "big five" of African legend stalk the verdant savannah and game viewing is the prime attraction. Viewing hides overlook waterholes enabling visitors to see animals at close range. As the home of Operation Rhino in the 1950s and 60s, the Park became world renowned for its white rhino conservation. Other areas of focus for which Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park is famed include wilderness trails which originated in Imfolozi in the 1950s and its renowned Game Capture unit recently upgraded into the Centenary Capture Centre, a bench mark for animal capture and sustainable utilization throughout Africa. The Park covers some ha and contains an immense diversity of fauna and flora. Hluhluwe is characterised by hilly topography, and the northern section of the park is noted for its wide variety of both bird and animal life. Apart from game-viewing drives, there are two self-guided auto trails, guided walks are also available and are particularly rewarding in the early morning and late afternoon. 13
