Students will study in three different recreation environments: Alpine, Wilderness (including river, mountain and forest), and Ocean recreation. They will gain valuable experience in environments performing activities based around local ecosystem knowledge and awareness, risk management and identification, navigation and outdoor skills, exploratory field experience, and sustainable tourism practice. Students will be given the opportunity to obtain certification related to outdoor adventure recreation (including, but not limited to, first aid, belay, and kayak safety). In honour of our local indigenous people and their vast knowledge and history of the land as a resource, survival tool, and living ecosystem, a focus of this course will be directed toward traditional learning and ways of life. Vancouver Island is renowned for the variety of outdoor adventure activities available year round. This course aims to take advantage of Vancouver Island recreation to provide students with sustainable adventure trekking knowledge and experiential field study practice. Students will study in three different environments: Alpine, Wilderness (including river, mountain and
3 forest), and Ocean recreation. Many skills learned and developed for use in one environment are transferable to all other environments and as such are valuable to students development toward eco-literacy. They will gain valuable experience in environments performing activities based around local ecosystem knowledge and awareness, risk management and identification, navigation and outdoor skills, exploratory field experience, and sustainable tourism practice. Finally, students will be introduced to a variety of outdoor adventure recreation activities and will develop the skills in order to gain confidence, exposure and experience to choose these activities later in life. This combines experiential learning and practice, field experience and technical survival skills to produce students who are experienced and confident within outdoor adventure environments. Link to BC Ed Plan: Embedded within this course are the competencies that are vital to the 21 st Century learning. Each unit addresses and allows for development in creative and critical thinking, communication, personal and cultural identity, as well as personal and social awareness and responsibilities. Both outdoor experience fieldwork and indoor classroom and practice will be involved. Students will develop an understanding of the principles of alpine ecosystems and will prepare, define and manage risks, and participate in alpine adventures to gain confidence and experience in the alpine environment. It is expected that students will: Alpine Ecosystem Describe the types and general features of the alpine ecosystem Discuss the impact humans have had on the local alpine environment Indigenous Practices Describe traditional uses and practices of local indigenous people of plant and animals Integrate indigenous activities such as ecosystem based food gathering, clothing, shelter, and celebrations Explain the purpose for seasonal and environmental ways of life Demonstrate and explain the history and evolution of practices unique to local people

Certified instructors as well as additional supervisory personnel will be required for most adventure recreation activities. All high-risk activity components will be taught by certified instructors.
