After a 20-minute shuttle to Girsh Park, you ll be treated to light brunch-style snacks while getting to know your fellow travelers. Your Trek Travel guides will spend some time familiarizing you with your Trek bicycle and ensuring you a comfortable fit before discussing the rules of bike safety and offering some specific cycling tips for riding in California. Then it s off for a warm-up ride along the coast. Ride through the campus of the University of California, Santa Barbara which boasts more bikes than cars! Continue on oceanfront bike paths and through the exclusive Hope Ranch neighborhood before arriving in downtown Santa Barbara. Enjoy lunch with your companions before deciding whether to ride further to Skofield Park or alternatively check into your hotel and enjoy the charms of downtown Santa Barbara. Reconvene later for drinks this evening and get an overview of the week ahead from your guides before dining together on delicious fresh California cuisine at an acclaimed downtown restaurant. Following breakfast at the hotel, you ll head out along the coast before turning inland to climb up to East Mountain Drive. Cruising along this road, you ll understand why locals say it s one of the prettiest rides in North America, with stunning panoramic views of sprawling estates in the hills above and the glittering blue expanse of the ocean below. If you re up for a challenge, take on the classic Gibraltar Road climb, where you can pedal up and turn around anytime, but the views only get better the higher you go! Back in Santa Barbara, stop at a cafe for a quick lunch on your own then return to the hotel before this afternoon s main event: the finish of Stage 5 of the Amgen Tour of California. You are invited to a private Trek Travel party near the finish line and afterward you ll have the chance to meet some riders from the Trek Factory Racing Team during an exclusive meet and greet. Tonight, you are free to explore a restaurant of your choice in bustling downtown Santa Barbara. Personal Cycling Gear: On your trip Trek Travel provides a helmet, flat or caged pedals & a Bontrager saddle. Beyond what is provided on your trip, you are welcome to bring your own gear: a helmet, seat, pedals, shoes, etc. Just label and pack it in a separate, easily accessible bag. 3 ITINERARY DAY 3: FRIDAY, MAY 16, 2014 Live Viewing of Amgen Tour of California Stage 6 Finish from Amgen VIP Hospitality Tent: Mountain High Basic Option: Santa Clarita to Mountain High Approximately 66 miles with 7,200 feet of climbing Short Option: Palmdale to Mountain High Approximately 34 miles with 4,700 feet of climbing An invigorating day lies ahead as the pros take on today s Stage 6 route to the summit finish at Mountain High. With the finish line located at 6,000 feet, this strategic stage may well provide a surprise shake-up in the General Classification. After breakfast a 90 minute shuttle will take you to Santa Clarita, where your ride will begin with a quiet climb up Bouquet Canyon before passing through Palmdale and continuing to Mountain High. Today s riding is mostly uphill, but your Trek Travel support vehicle and guides will be on-hand to offer encouragement, snacks and a boost if needed. Enjoy delicious food, refreshing drinks and all the live race action as you watch the drama unfold on the big screen TVs in the Amgen VIP hospitality tent. Before the arrival of the peloton, take a behind-the-scenes tour with the Trek Factory Racing Team to check out the team bus and the pros state-of-the-art equipment for a unique glimpse into the life of elite racers. After the stage ends a two hour shuttle will take you to the Westlake Village Inn, where you ll enjoy a dinner with your traveling companions at the European-inspired Stonehaus. Hotel Westlake Village Inn DAY 4: SATURDAY, MAY 17, 2014 Basic Option: Mugu Rock Loop with shuttle from Mulholland Highway to Malibu Cafe Approximately 44 miles with 1,380 feet of climbing Short Option: Westlake Village Inn to Mulholland Highway Approximately 31 miles with 960 feet of climbing Avid Option: Mugu Rock Loop Approximately 57 miles with 3,500 feet of climbing Today is your opportunity to ride, relax and immerse yourself in the beauty of the Santa Monica Mountains and the Malibu coastline. After a relaxed breakfast and a stroll through the manicured grounds of the Westlake Village Inn, you ll board your bike and pedal east before turning south toward the iconic Pacific Coast Highway. Cycle along the coast and past Point Mugu State Park before turning back into the hills and climbing Mulholland Highway one of the locals favorite climbs. Alternatively you can shuttle to lunch at the renowed Malibu Cafe at Calamigos Ranch. The Gerson family first opened a restaurant on this property four generations ago, and they continue to serve dishes inspired by the cowboy lifestyle and perfected over the years. After this memorable meal, continue riding or shuttle back to the hotel, stopping along the way for a tasting at the Cornell Winery. Once back at the hotel, relax by the secluded pool or perhaps schedule a visit to the on-site spa. You are on your own this evening to explore the restaurants of Westlake Village, a short shuttle ride away. 4 ITINERARY DAY 5: SUNDAY, MAY 18, 2014 Live Viewing of Amgen Tour of California Stage 8 Finish: Thousand Oaks Basic Afternoon Option: Stunt Ranch Loop Approximately 37 miles with 3,500 feet of climbing Short Afternoon Option : Cold Canyon Loop Approximately 26 miles with 1,600 feet of climbing Today you ll see the crowning of the 2014 Amgen Tour of California champion! Check out the expo this morning as the excitement of the Grand Finale day builds around you, before America s premier pro cycling race claims the streets of Thousand Oaks. Feel the electricity surge through the crowd as the racers draw near and cheer your favorite riders on their way to the finish line. After, join your companions for lunch at a nearby cafe before heading out on an idyllic afternoon ride through the Santa Monica Mountains chaparral, live-oak woodlands and grasslands. The backdrop of your ride may seem a little bit familiar from the large number of movie and television shows filmed in this area since the 1920s. Choose from two loop rides, both of which will take you past Paramount Ranch, a National Park site that contains a portion of Paramount Pictures original movie ranch; or stop into the King Gillette Ranch, the shooting location of CBS s The Biggest Loser! This evening a fun and relaxing social hour and dinner in Mediterraneo at the Westlake Village Inn awaits, a perfect way to toast a great week of riding and pro cycling experiences. Hotel Westlake Village Inn DAY 6: MONDAY, MAY 19, 2014 Farewell Ride: Rock Store Loop Approximately 21 miles with 1,500 feet of climbing This morning you ll have the opportunity for one last short ride up the famed Rock Store climb and around a perfect loop through the Malibu hills. This circuit, featured in the final stage of the 2010 Amgen Tour of California, takes you past one of the most famous motorcyclist hangouts in the world: The Rock Store. Stop in to say hi to owners Ed and Vern, who have welcomed visitors to their restaurant since the early 1960s. Or, you may choose to sleep in or take a stroll around the beautiful grounds of the inn and enjoy a leisurely breakfast this morning before check-out. You ll say farewell to your guides at 11:00 AM at the Westlake Village Inn. You ll then shuttle 1-2 hours, depending on traffic, to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to arrive at approximately 1:00 PM. Please allow adequate connection time for your continuing travel plans to accommodate possible traffic delays. 6 ARRIVING & DEPARTING HOW TO GET THERE Flights We suggest that you arrive at least one day prior to the trip start, which will enable you to adjust to the time zone and minimize the risk of missing the trip start due to flight-related delays. We recommend that you fly into Santa Barbara Municipal Airport (SBA) in Goleta, approximately 8 miles from downtown Santa Barbara. Most major U.S.-based airlines serve this airport. From just outside baggage claim you can hail a cab for ground transportation, and a cab from the airport to downtown will cost approximately $40. If you are staying at the pickup hotel, Fess Parker s DoubleTree Resort offers a complimentary on-call shuttle for guests to and from the airport. Please call to arrange for the service upon arrival in Santa Barbara and allow 20 to 30 minutes for pick up. Alternatively, you may fly into Los Angeles (LAX) and take one of the daily Amtrak trains or the Santa Barbara Airbus to Santa Barbara. Visit or for more information. At the conclusion of your trip, we suggest flying home from the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Trek Travel will provide a shuttle to the airport as described below. If you wish to spend some additional time in Westlake Village you may depart at your leisure and arrange for your own transportation to the airport or to your next destination. Once everyone has arrived, a private 20 minute shuttle will take you to Girsh Park in Goleta. Those who choose to fly into Santa Barbara this morning can take a taxi to Girsh Park, which is located just 4 miles from the airport. If you will be late for the pick-up or are going to miss it altogether, please inform your guides. You will receive an a week before the trip start with their names and contact details. If you cannot reach them, please call our first hotel, Hotel Oceana Santa Barbara ( ), and leave a message with your expected arrival time and contact details. A taxi from downtown Santa Barbara to Girsh Park will cost about $45 and take about 20 minutes. A taxi from the Santa Barbara Airport to Girsh Park will cost about $25 and take about 10 minutes. Cancellation Policy: If you must cancel your trip more than 90 days prior to departure, there is a cancellation fee of $100; between days prior to departure there is a cancellation fee of 25% of the original trip price; between days prior to departure there is a cancellation fee of 50% of the original trip price; there is no refund for cancelling a trip less than 30 days prior to departure. If you choose to change your trip more than 90 days prior to departure, you may do so with no fee. From days, there will be a $1,000 administrative fee. If you choose to change your trip within 60 days of the original trip start, the cancellation policy outlined above will apply.
