Introduction Our very special trekking adventure across the deserts and mountains of Jordan to the truly magnificent site of ancient, iconic Petra is definitely unique in many ways. As you walk through the dramatic gorges and canyons of the Dana Mountains on trails best known only to the local, nomadic Bedouin, it s highly unlikely you ll encounter any other trekkers. Our very special guide in Jordan, whom has been awarded with a Wanderlust 2009 Guide of the Year has spent a painstaking amount of time with the Bedouin in creating this most special and unique route to Petra. With the intelligent use of 4WD drive vehicles, wonderful nights spent camping in wild tranquillity beneath the stars can be fully supported and in true Bedouin style along with local cooks providing amazing food in splendid isolation. Waking each morning to the aroma of freshly cooked bread at camp is almost worth it alone! You ll be trekking through the most exciting and rugged landscapes in Jordan starting in the famous Dana Nature Reserve and crossing the classic rocky hamada desert to climb into the spectacular mountains and escarpments above the Great Rift Valley. Spectacular trails lead through Wadi s and along rocky ledges to emerge at the back door of Petra itself. After exploring amazing Petra, it s time to visit the breathtaking, outstanding desert scenery of Wadi Rum renowned for it s arched rock bridges, dunes, canyons and beautiful sunsets. A perfect climax to a superb voyage of discovery through the dramatic landscapes of the Bedouin. It s no surprise that this adventure is fast becoming known as The Inca Trail of the Middle East, yet with our very special route to Petra you ll certainly feel off the beaten track. Please note this dossier is for 2011 departures only. See separate trip dossier for Walking Conditions This special trek commissioned by Walks Worldwide, has been created by our good friend and qualified Jordanian guide. Assisted by the local Bedouin and their unique knowledge, the trek follows the hidden trails of the deserts and mountains not found on any map! The route we have developed weaves between Jordan s highest peaks above the Great Rift Valley escarpment. The trek elevation varies from 300m at Fienan to almost 1100m at the high viewpoint above Petra. Trail conditions will vary. At times you ll be walking across stony or sandy desert trails used by nomadic Bedouin and their livestock. Other times you ll be following narrow and often scant trails through Wadi s, sometimes with short sections of easy scrambling, as well as across rocky, mountainous terrain and the occasional ledge. Ascent and descent (sometimes steep) through the mountains and across passes is a natural feature of this trek, although these are not particularly sustained. This trip requires a good level of fitness and stamina and is best suited to the regular, experienced hillwalker. It is essential that you are physically prepared for this trip and capable of walking approx. 6 or more hours per day for several days consecutively through mountainous terrain. should ensure you are comfortable walking at this level of grading. Petra contains hundreds of tombs and dwellings, literally hewn out of the rock face of the mighty cliffs and towering rock walls, a reminder of the one time wealth of the Nabataeans, Arabs who ruled Transjordan in pre-roman times. Until the early 1980 s the Bdul tribe (who have lived here for as long as anyone can remember) were living in these cave like dwellings. Petra is now the biggest tourist attraction for Jordan. Despite all the visitors the place should not be missed. Wadi Rum offers the traveller some of the most vivid desert scenery in the world. Silent starry nights (a million star campsite!) and beautiful sunrises and sunsets are to be observed in splendid solitude from one of the neighbouring summits or in the company of other intrepid trekkers by the light of the evening camp fire. It was settled as early as 800 BC and mentioned in the Quran as Ad. By the 4th Century BC inscriptions on the rocks were left which tell us today that the Nabataeans were here. The site is of course also renowned for the exploits of TE Lawrence described in detail in his book The Seven Pillars of Wisdom and the full-length feature film Lawrence of Arabia. A full explanation of the trip grading can be found online at You Jordan-Bedouin Trails to Petra 2

The Holiday Routine On this tour reasonably early starts are made in order to maximise the time available during the day and to cover a fair amount of ground before it gets too hot. After a hearty middle-eastern style breakfast, you load up with water for the day and a packed lunch and set off on the trail. There will always be time for exploration and to take photographs. As a general rule you ll walk for around 3-4 hours in the morning, taking a lengthy (shady) lunch break en route to avoid the heat of the day, continuing for 2-4 hours walking to camp. Here you ll enjoy a freshly prepared tasty Arabic style dinner. The trek is supported by 4WD vehicles, which can access the camping areas by dirt roads. Your main baggage will be transported from camp to camp by these vehicles, leaving you free during the walking day having only to carry your usual daypack. Possible camping places are limited in this region, and we prefer wherever possible to camp near a water source. However this is not always possible, and on a couple of occasions water will be brought in by vehicle. We will be providing you with bottled drinking water throughout the trek; you will need to carry what water you need for the entire duration of the walking day in your daypack (at least 3 litres are recommended). Please note that while we endeavour to follow the itinerary below as much as possible during the holiday, due to the nature of this tour circumstances might occur which will force us to alter the itinerary accordingly. Please remember if this occurs it will be for your benefit and safety. The temperature on this trek can vary considerably on any of our departures, so you need to be prepared for both hot sun, cooler nights and even on occasion quite cold rainy weather. A full explanation of the trip grading can be found online at You should ensure you are comfortable walking at this level of grading and are physically prepared for the trip. Walk staff The trek will be guided by a fully qualified and licensed local guide who will speak both Arabic and excellent English. His local knowledge and mountain experience is a genuine enhancement to trip. Local Bedouin whose families have wandered these areas for centuries will assist him acting as 4WD drivers, camp crew and cooks. What you need to provide Your personal equipment as detailed in the clothing and equipment list later in this trip dossier. It is important that your day pack is at least 30 litre capacity in order for you to be able to carry the necessary amount of water you will most definitely need each day, as well as other items you would normally need on a daily basis whilst on trek. Itinerary IMPORTANT-Due to the specialist nature of our holidays, day to day itineraries should be taken as a guide only, and as statements of intent and not contractual obligations. We regularly update our trip dossiers to take into account changes to trekking routes, accommodation, local transport etc. Such changes are a factor of this type of holiday and when made are out of necessity. Other factors such as adverse weather, unforeseen circumstances and other matters entirely out of our control etc can also lead to enforced changes during the course of the holiday. It is not possible to guarantee that any of our holidays will operate exactly as per the anticipated itinerary. The most current trip dossier will be made available on our website. We will also send you the most up to date trip dossier with your Final Joining Instructions approx. 2 weeks before departure and you should carefully check this for any changes that may affect your plans. We also recommend you read the Useful Information section on our website and in our current brochure. Jordan- The Bedouin Trail to Petra 3

Day 1 Depart UK for Amman International Airport. Rendezvous at the group hotel in Amman. A single, timed group transfer will be provided from Amman International Airport to the group hotel in downtown Amman. See Joining Arrangements and transfers later in this trip dossier. Hotel, Amman. Day 2 Just a short drive from Amman you ll pay a visit to Mount Nebo. Here Moses is said to have been given a view of the Promised Land and according to Christian and Jewish tradition was later buried. The modern church that sits atop the mountain protects the ruins of a much older 4th century basilica, and inside you can see the remains of mosaics dating from the 6th century. There are also wonderful views from here across the north end of the Dead Sea to the Holy Land. From here you travel south along the King s Highway to Dana Nature reserve. En route it may be possible to make a brief visit to Al Karak, one of Jordan s finest Crusader Castles, the oldest parts dating back to the 12th century. produce and crafts. The afternoon s walk is mainly downhill (around 700m descent) along a good track to the eco-friendly RSCN Wilderness Lodge at the lowest point of the reserve. (Walking time approx. 7-8 hours / approx 26km) Eco Lodge / camp, Fienan Day 4 Today you ll trek along the bottom of Wadi Araba, a classic hamada landscape that is generally flat, quite easy but rocky terrain underfoot. To the west, the expanse of the Wadi Araba Desert unfurls before you. There are a couple of Wadi s to cross along the way. A little way out of Fienan you pass both Byzantine and Nabatean ruins, some of which have been partially reconstructed. You walk along the bajada with black magmatic mountains to the left and desert dunes to the right. You will usually camp near a dry canyon and in the afternoon will be able to explore 'upriver' if there is time. (Walking time approx.5-6 hours / approx 18km) Bedouin style Camp, Wadi Barwas In the late afternoon you arrive at Rumana Campsite, delightfully situated high in the Dana Nature Reserve. From here it is on foot all the way to Petra, and you can start with a sunset stroll up the nearby Rumana Mountain. Dana Nature Reserve covers 308 square kilometres and is a world of natural treasures. It is composed of a chain of valleys and mountains, which extend from the top of the Jordan Rift Valley down to the desert lowlands of Wadi Araba. The Reserve contains a remarkable diversity of landscapes that range from wooded highlands to rocky slopes and from gravel plains to dunes of sand. Moreover, Dana supports diverse wildlife, which includes a variety of rare species of plants and animals; Dana is home to about 600 species of plants, 37 species of mammals and 190 species of birds. Rumana (fixed) campsite Day 3 From the campsite a delightful contouring path takes you around the head of the valley towards Dana village. The rock formations you pass through are spectacular. Dana village, a real spring fed oasis with lush vegetation and an abundance of fruit provides a nice place to stop for lunch and offers great views down to Wadi Araba. The village has a visitor centre and shop where you can purchase local Day 5 Today you climb up away from the Wadi floor, and ascend into the mountains. Initially the route is indistinct and crosses some rough terrain until a more distinct Bedouin trail is reached. The trail, with around 3 hours of ascent and some steep, challenging sections Jordan- The Bedouin Trail to Petra 5

takes you over two passes, including a delightful juniper-filled valley on the way to the second pass. From the second pass the scenery is spectacular sandstone and black magmatic mountains, and you can see the next day's trail as it snakes its way across the mountainsides in the distance. The trail descends to the valley below, and a short walk alongside a dry-river bed takes you to the campsite for tonight. Bedouin style Camp, Ras El Fied (Walking time approx. 6 hours / approx 10km) usually the last part of Petra that people see. You will then climb down from the Monastery and after visiting the church, Nabatean temple, and the main tombs. Naturally, you ll see the Treasury too, which is perhaps Petra s most famous landmark. Day 6 A long but rewarding day - the 'crux' of the trek through this seldom visited wilderness of Jordan. After retracing your steps for a short while, the trail cuts up into the mountains again, passing the ruins of an Edomite village from where the views back down to Wadi Araba are spectacular. As the trail contours across the mountainside, it ascends to small cols and descends to dry wadis, with exciting new views appearing as each corner is turned. In the remoter middle section the trail is less distinct and one may at times feel more like a mountain goat than a trekker, with some necessity for easy scrambling involved. Keep an eye out for the elusive Ibex near the spring at Hudus, before ascending steadily to the final col and camp for the night. (Walking time approx. 8-9 hours / approx 15+km) Bedouin style Camp, Ishkart Msaid Day 7 Today our Jordanian trail finding pioneers have sought out a exciting new route through the wind and water sculptured sandstone, to avoid the road, which has recently been metalled. Some rough fields are crossed where the Bedouin sow wheat in the autumn and harvest it the following spring. Emerging from the last canyon onto a high plateau, you can finally see across to the mountains of Petra and make out Aaron's Tomb. The final few kilometres descend gently on tracks and dirt roads to reach the fixed campsite, where you can enjoy the luxury of a hot shower! Time permitting, in the evening you will make a visit to nearby Little Petra for a taste of what is to come at the main site tomorrow. (Walking time 5-6 hours / 14km)Fixed Camp, Beida The rest of the day is free to explore the wonders of Petra at leisure, before making the 90-minute drive to our fixed camp in Wadi Rum. Approx 5 hours walking/ 15km)Fixed Camp, Wadi Rum Day 8 After passing the Beida Neolithic site, the route into the backdoor of Petra takes you past many Bedouin camps. Some spectacular trails along rocky mountain ledges take you around the final cliffs to arrive at the top end of Petra where you enter by the Monastery, which is Jordan- The Bedouin Trail to Petra 6

Day 9 A full morning of excursions in Wadi Rum using 4x4 vehicles as support. The actual programme followed is flexible, and your guide will discuss the possibilities with you. You may be walking through sandy and rocky 'siqs', crossing wide wadis, ascending one of the rocky jebels and generally exploring some of the less frequently visited parts of this amazing region. To make the most of our time at marvellous Wadi Rum, dinner will be taken here so that a final desert sunset can be enjoyed before making the 3hrs 30mins drive back to Amman.3* Hotel, Amman Day 10 A single, timed group airport transfer will be provided from the group hotel to Amman International Airport. See Joining Arrangements and Transfers section. Practical Information Joining Arrangements and Transfers A single timed, group Airport transfer is provided on Day 1 of the trip itinerary. This transfer is timed to coincide only with the arrival of the Royal Jordanian Airlines designated group flight from London Heathrow to Amman. At the end of the trip on Day 10, a single, timed group Airport transfer will be provided from the group hotel in Amman back to the Airport. This transfer is timed to coincide only with check-in for the Royal Jordanian Airlines flight back to London Heathrow. Please note that as all International flight times are subject to change, the timings of the single timed group airport transfers will be changed to suit any changes to the flight schedule of the designated group flight accordingly. The designated group flight for this trip is the Royal Jordanian Airlines flight from London Heathrow to Amman. This flight usually departs Heathrow in the late afternoon, arriving at Amman late at night the same day. For the return flight this usually departs Amman in the morning and arrives back at Heathrow the same afternoon. If you are not arriving/departing on the designated group flights, whether you have booked your flights with Walks Worldwide or independently, you will need to make your own arrival and departure Airport transfers. It s approx. 40 mins from the Airport to the group hotel in Amman. A taxi will cost around 35JD each way. Flight Inclusive Package Options Walks Worldwide will be delighted to make your international flight arrangements for this holiday. We have full ATOL bonding and can book flights with most airlines. For most of our group trips, we will usually select a preferred group flight, but we can also arrange for you to fly with an alternative airline (often with regional departure options), or to arrive/depart on earlier/later dates if you prefer. The designated group flight for this holiday is with Royal Jordanian Airlines from London Heathrow Airport. International flight prices are variable and usually can only be guaranteed at the time of booking. If you would like to upgrade to business or first class, we can also arrange this for you Please contact the Walks Worldwide office for an up to date Flight Inclusive Package quote plus flight advice and options for your chosen holiday. Please note all airline schedules are subject to change. Land Only The Land Only price does not include International flights. You will need to make your own Airport transfer arrangements at the start and end of the trip. If you are booking your own flights you will need to book flights that enable you to arrive in Jordan on Day 1 of the trip itinerary. Return flights should be booked to depart from Jordan no sooner than Day 10 of the trip itinerary. IMPORTANT- MAKE SURE YOUR CHOSEN HOLIDAY IS GUARANTEED TO RUN BEFORE YOU PURCHASE AIR TICKETS AND MAKING ANY OTHER TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS. Please contact the Walks Worldwide office to check the status of your chosen holiday BEFORE purchasing your International Air ticket. You should not book your International flight tickets or other travel arrangements until your chosen holiday is guaranteed to run. If you are purchasing your own air ticket, you should be aware that most of the cheaper airline tickets available for sale on the internet or from low cost carriers are non-refundable in the case of cancellation. For this reason we Jordan- The Bedouin Trail to Petra 7

strongly advise you check the rules of the ticket when you make a flight booking, and check the limitations of any cancellation insurance policy you have. We cannot be held liable, for losses incurred relating to any flight bookings or subsequent travel arrangements you have made yourself. Once your chosen holiday has reached guaranteed status we will contact you. Passports and Visas To visit Jordan all British and European travellers need a valid passport and a Visa. You will need to obtain your visa on arrival where you need to pay in local currency, which can be obtained at the exchange bureau at the airport (open throughout the night). This is a simple process of filling in a form and handing this and the visa fee (presently JD10) to immigration before continuing through to customs. Check the latest visa costs at and for visa requirements. Accommodation Accommodation will be reserved for you on a twin share basis for nights spent in hotels only unless you have requested a single room at extra cost. The single supplement applies only to night s spent in hotels. The first night in Jordan is spent in a comfortable hotel in Amman. Private accommodation is not available for any the nights not spent in hotels. The night of day 2 is spent at a pleasant fixed tented camp. Dependent upon availability, which can usually not be pre-determined in advance we may use rooms at the Eco-Lodge at Feinan or camp Bedouin style by the lodge accordingly. On trek the group will spend most nights in the semi-open and communally under the cover of a single Bedouin tent. Many clients also like to take the opportunity to sleep out under the stars on suitably warm evenings. Mattresses and blankets will be provided, so you need only bring a sheet sleeping bag, but you are welcome to bring a proper sleeping bag if you prefer. For these nights where we camp wild, a private, enclosed eco-toilet is provided, along with rudimentary washing facilities. In Wadi Rum you camp in a tented site, which has hot showers, European toilets and a buffet restaurant with a shaded, terraced dining area and a large Bedouin tent with glowing campfire. There is a bar here too! Food Jordanian food is excellent, with restaurants and cafes renowned for their hygiene. First class fresh produce, with the subtle addition of herbs and spices, is used to produce Hummus - cooked chickpeas mixed with tahini (a sesame seed paste), garlic and lemon. Maqlubbeh is steamed rice topped with grilled slices of eggplant or meat, grilled tomato and pine nuts. Why not try Turkish-style stuffed vine leafs called yalenjeh but go careful on the spicy dips of daqqeh. A beautiful salad is Tabouleh made up of parsley, cracked wheat and tomato and is perfect with humous in bread. Bottled mineral water is readily available in the cities and towns and is provided at each camp. Being a Muslim country alcohol is not available in every café/restaurant. The food in Wadi Rum is good and wholesome. Vegetarians will usually find that there is generally little difficulty on this tour, although options may be limited. Climate It is of course impossible to predict the precise weather conditions you will encounter during the course of your holiday. However, we do schedule our holidays to coincide with what should be the most suitable weather periods for walking. The best time to go trekking in Jordan is between October and April. The temperatures on this trek can vary considerably on any of our departures, so you need to be prepared for both hot sun and cold rain. As a general rule, daytime temperatures may reach up to 30 C as a maximum and night time temperatures are likely to be around 10 C. It can often get cold at night in the desert in spite of warms days. For climate statistics visit: Local transport All transfers will be made using private vehicles. Baggage Please make sure that your baggage is clearly marked with your name, inside as well as outside, in case the labels get detached. Extra baggage may be left at the hotel in Amman while you are trekking. 4WD vehicles will transfer all main luggage during the trek. As your main baggage is transported from camp to camp by vehicle your usual suitcase or a hold-all type kitbag is acceptable for your main baggage. Please restrict your main baggage to one piece per person. Responsible Tourism Particular consideration should be given to the way you dress. As an Islamic country, the local Jordan- The Bedouin Trail to Petra 8

people dress conservatively and exposing bare flesh (e.g. shoulders, legs) is often offensive to most Jordanians. However, during the trekking day, it is acceptable to walk in T-Shirts and Shorts. For most of this trip, other than at camp it is unlikely you ll encounter many people (locals or trekkers), other than perhaps the occasional Bedouin shepherd. An Arabic type scarf can be most useful to carry in your daypack if you need to cover up unexpectedly, as well as a good way to keep the sun off your head too! Women in particular should avoid wearing tight, revealing clothing and crop tops. Although tempting in the sunshine, halter neck/strap style tops should definitely be avoided as not only is the exposure of bare shoulders offensive to the local people, carrying a day pack for several days continuously with sun-burned shoulders is clearly not desirable. Vaccinations and medical precautions We always recommend visiting your doctor and dentist for a check up before travelling. Your doctor will also have access to the most up to date information on vaccinations and medical precautions for the country you are about to visit. In general, no vaccinations are necessary for Jordan and health problems here are quite rare. Anyone coming from epidemic areas is required to have a vaccination certificate for yellow fever. Bottled water is provided on the walk. A useful travel health online resource is: First Aid You should always carry your own small, personal first aid kit. This should consist of the following: A general anti-biotic, throat lozenges, painkillers, plasters (band-aids), blister treatment, insect repellent (DEET), rehydration salts, antiseptic cream, diarrhoea treatment (e.g. Imodium). Currency. The Jordanian currency is the Dinar (JD). Please refer to for up to date rates. Prices for many items in Jordan are similar to those in the UK. ATM machines are common in the big cities as are credit cards. You will not have any access to any banks whilst on trek but equally you will not have any access to anywhere you can spend anything! Language The official language of Jordan is Arabic. Whilst your guide will speak excellent English, many of the local people, as well as your Bedouin camp crew will speak little if any English. We highly recommend taking along an Arabic phrasebook and learning some of the basics such as customary greetings. The locals will certainly appreciate any attempt you make to speak their language and is all part of the fun. Tipping Tipping in restaurants is usual in Jordan, and at the end of most meals you should expect to leave a tip of 10% for the waiter (where applicable). Our trek staff will anticipate, and 99% of the time deserve, a good tip at the end of the trek guidelines will be provided with your final joining instructions. Please remember that all tips should be a way for individuals to thank staff for good service. Travel Insurance It is a condition of booking any of our holidays that you have comprehensive travel insurance. It is your to responsibility to ensure you are covered for medical and personal accident risks for the part of the world you intend to travel and the activities involved. This cover should include repatriation costs, air ambulance and helicopter rescue. It is also advisable to take out cancellation insurance as all deposits paid are non-refundable. You may arrange either single-trip or annual multi-trip travel insurance through Walks Worldwide. Please call us on or ussales@walksworldwide.com for a Inclusions and exclusions Inclusions Flights and airport taxes (if booking a flight inclusive package) All meals whilst on trek (as listed above) All accommodation Guides whilst on trek All land transfers in the itinerary Main baggage transfers by vehicle Airport transfers on day 1 and day 10 as detailed in the Joining Arrangements and Transfers section Exclusions Drinks Souvenirs and personal items Insurance Meals not indicated above Jordan- The Bedouin Trail to Petra 9
