We've had some bike rides, a picnic, concerts and Friday night get-togethers. Most were well attended. If you missed all of these events don't fret, there are more doings coming. It's time to start thinking about the coming ski season. Where is the club planning to go? That has been decided - the western, mid west and family trip people have picked the places we're going and set the dates and prices. The family trip is already open for sign-ups! Now it's your turn to step up and participate. Come to our Ski-A-Rama general meeting and sign up for the trip of your choice. Further on in this newsletter the trips and their prices are spelled out in detail. Support your club by signing up at Ski-A-Rama. It's the best way to insure that you will have a time and a place to ski with friends this winter. Don't forget - Ski-A-Rama in August, Fall Picnic in September and 55th Anniversary Dance in October. 2 Heather Seger Vice President We will be starting the 2017 season with the Family Trip to Snowmass in Colorado. This trip will be from Saturday, January 1 st to Saturday, January 7 th, See Rich Clausius s article for full details. Our second trip for the season will be to Jackson Hole in Wyoming. As I had mentioned last month this trip is a combination two in one. This means we are offering a 7-day ski trip from Sunday, January 29 th to Sunday, February 5 th, And we are also offering a 5-day trip from Wednesday, February 1 st to Sunday, February 5 th, This way you can go and pick the length of time you want to spend there. Details are listed below. The third trip is with CMSC going to Beaver Creek in Colorado for Chicago Week. Details listed below. The last trip for this season is going to be a non-ski trip. The Nomads are going to cruise Alaska! There are several options for this cruise and the details are also listed below. If anyone is interested in being a trip leader for any of the trips (except the Family trip), please contact me and I can explain the responsibilities of this duty. Heather Jackson is cowboy country, the best of the Old West (check out the famous Cowboy Bar where saddles are used in lieu of barstools). It is located in Teton Country. It is just west of the Continental Divide in North West Wyoming and surrounded on all sides by mountain ranges including Sleeping Indian and Grand Teton National Park. The Mountain has 2500 acres of skiable terrain and there are 156 runs. It s been a while since our club has been here and there have been many improvements. The expansion of the ski area has created a dozen new runs for the intermediate skier s plus they added new lifts. The resort could move 400 people per hour up the mountain and now with the lift expansion they are moving 2000 people per hour. Plus this area also gets over 400 inches of snowfall!

Some of the amenities are: Hair dryers, soaps, lotions, shampoo, full exercise room, indoor pool, spas, saunas and a Complimentary continental breakfast which will include hot and cold cereals, muffins, fresh fruit, granola, Danish, yogurt, hot chocolate, coffee, orange juice, and teas. Complimentary mountain tours are at 9:30am daily. And if you don t want to bring your ski s back and forth each day; they offer lockers, basket check and ski/snowboard storage in the Bridger Center. On your day off you might want to see Jackson Hole from a different perspective? There is much more to do here than just skiing. You could go on a sleigh ride in the National Elk Refuge, take a wildlife tour in the Grand Teton National Park, snowshoe, cross country skiing, Yellowstone trip by Snow coach or snowmobile, sightseeing on the JHMR tram or gondola, Ice skating, Spa s, the National Museum of Wildlife Art, Chuck Wagon cookouts, and Cowboy bars. Plus there is plenty of shopping!!!!

4 Beaver Creek, Colorado Chicago Week ski trip is to Beaver Creek in Colorado. The Beaver Creek s resort center is a quaint, Tyrolean-style village nestled at the base of the ski area. The walkways encompass a large open-air ice rink and the heated sidewalks keep the snow off them plus from here the slopes are just an escalator ride away. Now that is classy! With 1,832 skiable acres and a 3,340 foot vertical rise, plus 325 inches of snowfall it s no wonder the skiing elite flock to Beaver Creek each winter. Beaver Creek has 25 lifts and 150 different trails to make every trip down the mountain an adventure. Your Beaver Creek Lift ticket is also valid at Vail, Breckenridge, Arapahoe Basin, and Keystone (including night skiing)! This trip will be from Saturday, February 25 th, 2017 to Saturday, March 4 th, The cost is $ per person and the package will include the following: Seven nights lodging at the Ridgepoint Townhomes Round trip airfare (Chicago /Denver) on Southwest Airlines Bus transportation Welcome reception 5-day lift ticket Trip to Vail Mountain Mountain luncheon Racing Pre-tip party Pub Crawl Apres-ski party Dinner Banquet with music and dancing. Ridgepoint Townhomes ( The Townhomes are set in the lower bench of Beaver Creek Resort, referred to as The Valley, among peaceful rolling foothills and a forest of tall spruce trees. Although the lifts and village are not within walking distance, the Village Transportation provides complimentary shuttle service to Beaver Creek Village making it just minutes away (~10 min). Ridgepoint offers three-bedroom townhomes with lofts. The spacious homes feature vaulted ceilings, fireplaces, washer/dryers, and mid-week housekeeping. Guests can enjoy an outdoor Jacuzzi and a sauna plus complimentary wireless Internet.

5 See Alaska on Princess Cruise line Alaska is the largest state (in area) of the United States. This land was acquired by the US in 1867 and was admitted to the union as the 49th state in The territory was purchased from Russia and people believed that the land had nothing to offer; but the discovery of gold in the 1890s created a stampede of prospectors and settlers. Alaska is bounded by the Beaufort Sea and the Arctic Ocean to the north; Canada s Yukon Territory and British Columbia province to the east; the Gulf of Alaska and the Pacific Ocean to the south; the Bering Sea to the west; and the Chukchi Sea to the northwest. There are going to be a few options for this trip. You can do either a 7-day voyage or a 7-day voyage with the 3-day land tour extension; plus there are 3 different types of lodging available. The prices above are for the cruise only. Because we are unable to book the air this far in advance I can only tell you that we anticipate the cost to be approximately $ roundtrip. That will be flying from Chicago to Vancouver and then flying from Anchorage to Chicago. Plus the transfers from the airport to the ship will be a small additional fee. I will have more information on this at Ski A Rama. Princess is one of the select few cruise lines permitted to enter majestic Glacier Bay National Park which is one of Alaska s crown jewels. Plus only Princess offers exclusive direct-to-the-wilderness rail service for the land portion of the trip. Some fun facts about Alaska Aurora borealis (northern lights) can be seen an average of 243 days a year in Fairbanks. The northern lights are produced by charged electrons and protons striking the earth s upper atmosphere. Alaska is less than 50 miles from Russia. While it is legal to shoot bears in Alaska, waking a sleeping bear for the purpose of taking a photograph is prohibited. The highest temperature recorded in Alaska was 100 degrees Fahrenheit in The lowest temperature recorded in Alaska was -80 degrees Fahrenheit in Alaska accounts for 25 percent of the oil produced in the United States. Alaska is the only state name that you can type on one row of a keyboard. Alaska contains more than 100 volcanoes and volcanic fields which have been active within the last two million years. Alaska is the only state that does not collect state sales tax or levy an individual income tax (some cities have sales tax, however). The fishing and seafood industry is the state s largest private industry employer. The largest salmon ever caught was at the Kenai River. It weighed in at 97.5 pounds. Alaska s largest lake, Lake Iliamna, is roughly the size of Connecticut. Alaska has more coastline than the rest of the United States combined (over 34,000 miles). Alaska has more inland water than any other state (20,171 square miles). Alaska is the only state to have coastlines on three different seas: the Arctic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, and Bering Sea. The state bird of Alaska is the willow ptarmigan. During the Klondike gold rush in 1897, potatoes were so highly valued for their vitamin C content that miners traded gold for them. The only battle during World War II that was fought on American soil took place in 1943 after the Japanese invaded the Aleutian Islands. The state sport of Alaska is dog mushing, which was once the primary mode of transportation. The Iditarod dog sledding race is the state s largest sporting event. More than half the world s glaciers can be found Alaska

9 Nomad Family Trip Jan 1-7, 2017 Snowmass, Colorado - On Sale July 6th!! Our 12th annual Nomad Family Trip we ll be to Snowmass, Colorado on Jan 1 7, 2017 (first week of January instead of over the Martin Luther King Holiday). For this trip we will be staying across from the base of Snowmass in two & three bedroom condos at the Tamarack. This will give us easy access to Snowmass and bus service to Aspen, Aspen Highlands, and Buttermilk. This is also an extended trip for 6 nights (instead of the usually 5 nights) with a 4 or 5 day lift ticket option. This trip will open to all Nomads, not just Families at the July 6th Social Meeting and includes: Flights to/from Denver, Colorado & bus to/from Snowmass. 2 & 3 Bedroom Condos at the Tamarack at Snowmass. Free lodging for Children if they sleep on a sleeper sofa, (and depending on the arrangements we may do the same for Teens). A few Condos have been set aside for Adults only (no Children or Teens). Four or Five day Lift Ticket options and includes all four mountains (Snowmass, Aspen, Aspen Highlands, and Buttermilk). Parties/Events: Pre-Trip Pizza Party, Club Lunch or Dinner, Club Race, and more. All adults must be Nomad Members along with Children & Teens. Children & Teens must be related to Parents, Uncles, etc. on the Trip, (no children friends). Current pricing depending on a 4 day or 5 day lift ticket is: $1380/$1,445 for Adults, $1,305/$1,365 for Seniors (age 65+) or $730/$785 for Children & Teens (sleeping on the sleeper sofa, cost is more if they get a bed). 10 Darling Debbie s Social Scene Don t forget Ski-a-Rama will be held on Thursday, August 18 th immediately following the General Meeting. We are receiving some nice things for our raffle. I am working with a couple of ski shops to bring the latest in equipment and clothes. The Trip Directors are working hard at finalizing their trips together so please plan to come out and sign up for your favorites. Be sure to bring your dollars for the raffles and your checkbooks for the trips!! I will need some volunteers to help set up, sell raffle tickets and assist with the raffle drawings. Please contact me if interested. This year for the first time, we will be tracking the names of those who win each raffle prize. Last year someone tried to sell something they won on Craigslist or ebay and the ski resort contacted me. Remember they are donating items for the raffle and do not expect that they will see these items for sell. We have purchased 20 tickets for the Thursday, August 25 th Joliet Slammers baseball game. They will be hosting the Windy City Thunderbolts. Game time is 7:05 pm. The normally priced $10 tickets will cost only $8 each. The Slammers were nice enough to provide us with free tickets for Ski-a-Rama last year and we d like to show our appreciation. This event is open to family and friends of all ages. Please contact me if you would like to purchase tickets. Cindy Vondrasek and I are hosting a golf outing Nine & Dine on Friday, August 26 th. The outing will be held at Woodruff Golf Course, 621 Gougar Rd, Joliet, IL. The cost is $32 per person and includes 9-holes w/cart, dinner, 2-hour open bar after golf (beer, wine, soda) and prizes. Please plan to arrive by 5:00 pm as we will need to time to get organized. Payment is made directly to Woodruff that night. You don t need a partner or foursome to sign up. Just call Woodruff ( ) and sign up under the Nomad Golf Outing no later than Monday, August 22 nd as you must register in advance. Also, please let Cindy or myself know that you have signed up. To make things interesting and get people to mingle, we plan to mix things up and have people pick the names of their partners. If you prefer to golf with your partner, that s ok too! 14 CHICAGO NOMADS BICYCLE RIDES 2016 Sunday, August 7, Cal-Sag Trail, Lake Katherine, Palos Heights: This ride departs at 10:30 a.m. beginning and ending at Lake Katherine Nature Center & Botanical Gardens, 7402 W. Lake Katherine Drive, Palos Heights. We will ride approximately 15 miles on this paved trail. Saturday August 27, 10:30 am. - Bike the Burbs for Beers: This bicycle pub crawl is a very informal bike ride; a chance for family and friends to get together to enjoy a day of fresh air, activity and conversation. We will ride through several majestic old neighborhoods and stop at several local establishments to relax and enjoy a drink or two. All of the places we visit are family owned and operated by great people that support their local communities. They re all old school, so if you re looking for something new, upscale, or trendy you will be disappointed. There is no cost for the ride except what you choose to spend on food and drink. We only ask that you don t over indulge and be generous with your servers. We will depart from downtown Flossmoor at 10:30 a.m. and ride through Flossmoor Park and parts of old Flossmoor to the north side of Chicago Heights, stopping at Dino s Food and Liquors for beer and Bloody Marys. From Dino's we will ride south through some of the great old neighborhoods of Chicago Heights to Paulie's Pub in South Chicago Heights. A nice ride further south through portions of Sauk Trail Woods Bike Path we will arrive at J Martin s Tap in Steger where Bob E. Lee and his band will be on hand to play some classic rock tunes. The band does not charge a fee, however, tips will be welcomed and we will pass the hat. Martin s famous fruit salad will also be on hand to enjoy and give you an energy boost. From Martin s we will head north to 3 Star Tavern on The Hill in Chicago Heights for a buffet lunch and more refreshments. After lunch we will head north through the Heights and back to Flossmoor ETA 4:30 p.m. Sunday, September 11, Old Plank Road Trail, Frankfort This ride departs at 10:30 a.m. from downtown Frankfort, Breidert Green Community Park, White and Kansas Streets. We will ride the paved trail 8-10 miles, stopping on our return at The Bulldog Ale House to enjoy refreshments, alfresco style (their $5.00 Bloody Mary s are fantastic and $4-32 oz beers will quench your thirst) then ride a short 4 miles back to Frankfort.

15 Cost: Non Members are Welcome. No fee to participate. The Nomad's are going to have a motorcycle ride. We will meet at 9am sharp at the Shell gas station on 191st and Lagrange in Mokena, IL and will be riding up to Union, IL. We plan to stay off the highway on the way there and may take the highway on the way back. Once there we plan to visit the Illinois Railway Museum. Entry into the museum is $14 per person. If our timing is right we will meet the car option at the museum. The museum, all meals and etc is pay on your own. From there we will either eat somewhere in town or at a designated location and then head back home. Hot-tub nude with someone worth bragging about. 22. Be evacuated from a lift. 3. Party all night and go straight to the slopes without sleep. 23. If trips are canceled due to circumstances beyond the control of the Nomad Ski Club, payments less expenses caused by the cancellation will be refunded. Non-Refundable Deposits: Members reserve a seat on a trip by making a non-refundable trip deposit. Non-refundable trip deposits are 10% of the trip price for Western & European trips and $35 for Midwest trips. Member Cancellations: Members who cancel their seat on a trip will forfeit the non-refundable trip deposit plus any fees or losses incurred on their behalf. If cancellation occurs after the predetermined closing date (the date the last payment is due on the trip), the full price of the trip may be charged. A cancellation form must be submitted to the Trip Leader within 30 days after the trip departs for refund consideration. Trip Waiting List: A completely full trip means all seats are filled on the bus scheduled for a Midwest trip or the minimum number of seats are filled on a Western or European trip. A member that cancels off a trip may be replaced on that trip from a waiting list, but the trip must be completely full. Canceling members that are replaced on a trip from a waiting list forfeit the non-refundable deposit plus any additional expenses incurred due to the cancellation. The excess will be refunded.
