The area is easily accessed by rail or car from the regions around Bern, Geneva and Gruyère. The main mode of transport is the Goldenpass panoramic train and a number of public bus routes. Both of them are integrated into the SBB rail timetable. 5 FACTS AND FIGURES GEOGRAPHY The holiday destination of Gstaad consists of ten chalet villages (Gstaad, Saanen, Schönried, Saanenmöser, Zweisimmen, Lauenen, Gsteig, Feutersoey, Turbach, Abländschen) located at an altitude between 1,000 to 1,400 metres. 8 THINGS TO DO AND PLACES TO GO GLACIER PEAK WALK BY TISSOT On Glacier 3000, the first and only suspension bridge that connects two mountain peaks has opened in November The Peak Walk is free of charge for Glacier 3000 visitors and is open all year round (depending on weather conditions). HUSKY TOURS Greenland Dogs and Siberian Huskies love nothing more than a hard day s work. Huskies pull visitors along through the beautiful winter landscape, enabling them to admire the indescribable interplay between people and animals. SKIING / SNOWBOARDING / CROSS COUNTRY Gstaad Mountain Rides is one of the most diverse winter sports regions in Switzerland with guaranteed snow thanks to the glacier. Skiers enjoy 220 kilometres of runs at an altitude between 1,000 and 3,000 metres above sea level. WINTER SPORTS SCHOOLS The winter sports schools in Gstaad offer group and individual tuition on all winter sports from beginners to advanced. 11 GLACIER SNOW AND ICE ALL YEAR ETERNAL SNOW ONLY 20 MINUTES FROM GSTAAD Gstaad is the ideal place for overnights before or after an excursion to Glacier Glacier 3000 guarantees snow all year round and provides numerous activities as well as two restaurants and a souvenir shop. There is an indescribable view of the most beautiful Alpine peaks from mount Eiger to Mönch, Jungfrau, the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc. 12 CULTURE AND TRADITION Exploring the rich Swiss culture and tradition in and around Gstaad, can be one of the most outstanding experiences for tourists. Learning about the Swiss down-to-earth life and getting to know the locals, who make this area so special, will create a lasting memory. For details and booking options contact the Tourism office. ALPHORN THE SWISS NATIONAL INSTRUMENT Visit of an Alphorn studio where tourists experience how this extraordinary instrument is carved and created. Afterwards each one gets a chance to try to play the Alphorn, an exciting experience for young and old alike. PAPER CUTTING (SILHOUETTES) WORKSHOP Paper cutting is an old traditional handicraft in the region of Gstaad. There is almost no hotel or chalet in the region, without a paper cutting decoration. In this workshop, under the instruction of an experienced paper cut artist, guests will learn how to handicraft their own Scheerischnitt (paper cutting). STRAW OR HAY OVERNIGHT STAYS Guests spend the night on mattresses in the hayloft over the cowshed on Alp Turnels and enjoy alpine breakfast with homemade cheese, jam and bread. Alp Turnels is open from beginning of July till end of August. There is the opportunity for a whey bath or cheese making workshop. YODELING TYPICAL SWISS SINGING During summer, various yodeling clubs are giving small and spontaneous concerts in the promenade of Gstaad or Saanen, depending on the weather and other events. Possibility to host a yodeling club for a private event and hear and learn more about the traditional Swiss singing. ZÜGLETE (COW PARADE) During the summer months, the farmers bring their cattle up to their Alpine farm where they will spend approximately three months, far from civilization. Züglete (cow parade), that s when the farmers ascent to the Alp with their herds and also, when they bring them down again in the early fall. The farmers lead their herds through the Promenade of Gstaad, all dressed-up with big cow bells, flowers and the farmer and family members wear their traditional costume. It is not marketed as a tourist attraction as it is part of the farmer s hard work in the area. For specific dates check the event calendar at or contact the Tourism office. 12

13 GROUP ACTIVITIES From outdoor sports to cultural to traditional Swiss, Gstaad offers a wide variety of activities for groups. CHEESE CAVE A monument for the cheese! Showcasing more than 3,000 cheeses, including some historical rarities, set within sophisticated lighting. The dairy shop Gstaad welcomes visitors to learn more about cheese and its traditions combined with a fine sampling of various locally made cheeses. 25 TOURS AND TRIPS AROUND GSTAAD From Gstaad there is a variety of different excursions and sightseeing tours available, which can easily be done by train or car within one or two hours. Below some recommended sights and excursions worth visiting during a longer stay. CHOCOLATE TRAIN TOUR The Chocolate Train runs from Montreux to the Gruyère region. First stop is the market town of Gruyères, where guests learn about cheese. For dessert, they visit the famous Maison Cailler for a factory tour and chocolate tasting. The passengers ride first-class comfort in a Belle Epoque Pullman train or in a modern panorama train with stunning views of the vineyards surrounding Montreux and medieval Gruyères. GRUYÈRES The charming and picturesque medieval town of Gruyères is located at the foot of the Prealps near Fribourg. It is suggested to also visit the Gruyères castle, one of the most prestigious castles in Switzerland that towers majestically above the medieval town. MONTREUX The jewel of Lake Geneva with Mediterranean style. Enjoy a peaceful stroll along the shores of Lake Geneva for almost seven kilometres.
