5 Expectations of destination managers! Relevance: Criteria and indicators should express relevant sustainability topics; rather focus on a small number of indicators! Setting a frame: criteria and indicators should represent tasks and goals as well as areas of influence of destination management! Performance: destination managers were interested in qualitative aspects of actions that are managed by performance indicators! Best practices: provide examples of other destinations and give support for implementation! Data collection and data availability: destination managers are not willing to put high efforts / to invest in data collection 5

6 Stakeholder perspectives! Consider tourism structures: take into account different tasks and goals from local to (sub-)national destination level; all destination levels have to be considered when creating criteria & indicators; however it has to be clear, who is responsible for realizing the criteria/requirement! Policy framework: criteria have to express possible areas of actions and give orientation as well as stimuli for actions, indicators can be helpful tools for status-quo analyses! Create synergies: integrate existing criteria-sets and do not create a new system! Core aspects: concentrate on the most important aspects of sustainability and reduce amount of criteria/indicators! Easy understanding: prevent misleading wording, clear and easy-to-understand phrasing, emphasize benefits of sustainability aspects 6

12 Conclusion! The guidelines provides destination managers in Germany with a practical aid on how to structure their destination sustainably.! The criteria are supplemented with guidelines containing detailed recommendations for action and implementation aids for tourism decisionmakers in the destinations.! Bridge a gap between theoretical reports and realization at the practical level and provide a framework for the implementation of sustainable tourism at regional destination level.! The project sets out important principles for the sustainable development of tourism in Germany and lays the foundation for the German tourism sector s contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) under the 2030 Agenda.! We invite other European and international tourism stakeholders to use the guidelines, criteria and recommendations developed as a practical framework for establishing sustainable tourism. For example Switzerland is planning to use the guidelines and criteria. 12
