1 Eagle Walk in East Tyrol... Hiking where the eagles fly - 9 days With the Eagle Walk, an alpine mountain trail was created that gives hikers unique views. Like the king of the air, you will have a lofty view from up above down into the valleys and of various mountain ranges past Austria s highest mountains such as the Großglockner & Großvenediger. Most of the stages of this trail run along a constant elevation between 2000 and 2500 meters. Program: Day 1: Ströden - Johannishütte Meeting point: 9:00 am in Ströden Hinterbichl. There will be a welcoming and material check with the mountain guide and program presentation. The first stage of the Eagle Walk in East Tyrol starts near the famous Umbal waterfalls in Prägraten/Ströden. The path first leads through a larch forest, and you will soon be able to hear the marmots whistling. We will head past the Göriacher Ochsnerhütte and stop for refreshments at the Essener-Rostocker Hütte. We will then continue on the Schweriner Weg past the Kleiner Geiger to the Türmljoch. Cairns mark the path, which leads to the Johannishütte, the oldest hut in the Eastern Alps. It was built in 1857 and renovated in It is a rewarding destination, because although this stage is long, it is also very scenically charming. Ascent 1430 vm, descent 730 vm, time-on-trail ca. 6.5 hrs. Day 2: Johannishütte - Eisseehütte Continue through the fascinating mountain scenery: from the Johannishütte, the path leads along a direct crossing over the Zopatscharte to the Eisseehütte in only 3.5 to 4 hrs. The normal route on the Sajat high-altitude path is closed due to a risk of rock falls. The neighboring mountain glaciers offer breathtaking views, and this short section can be used for relaxation or as a small exploration tour in the area of the Eisseehütte. Ascent 600 vm, descent 370 vm, time-on-trail ca. 3.5 hrs.

2 Day 3: Eisseehütte - Bonn-Matreier-Hütte Past the Eisseehütte in the Timmeltal, the path runs at a fairly constant elevation and passes through a prominent East Tyrolean mountain majesty, the Hoher Eichham. You will also be surrounded by charming mountains such as the Großer and Kleiner Hexenkopf, Säulkopf, and Rauhkopf. The path leads past the Wunwand and between the Wunspitze steeply up the Eselrücken. You will then reach the goal of this stage: the cozy Bonn-Matreier-Hütte. Ascent 600 vm, descent 370 vm, time-on-trail ca. 3.5 hrs. Day 4: Bonn-Matreier-Hütte - Badener Hütte This wonderful area is full of gorgeous views. From the Bonn-Matreier-Hütte, the paths first leads through rock-laden terrain towards the Säulkopf. If you prefer not to climb this peak, turn off to the Kälberscharte, and you will later pass the rugged, steep Galtenscharte and continue into the territory of the Großglockner. The striking Kristallwand above the hut resembles the north face of the notorious Eiger. Ascent 800 vm, descent 950 vm, time-on-trail ca. 5 hrs. Day 5: Badener Hütte Matreier Tauernhaus in East Tyrol This stage offers grandiose glacier panoramas. The Venediger High Trail first leads to the north and a gentle, almost flat gradient will take you to the Löbbentörl, from where you will have wonderful views of the Frosnitztal and Venediger range. Past Salzboden and the gorgeous lake, the Salzbodensee, the path continues to the east along the glacier trail to the Venedigerhaus in Innergschlöss. Here, you can enjoy delicious alpine treats, and there are overnight accommodation options. Otherwise, you can continue to Außergschlöss. Tired but delighted about the many beautiful impressions of nature seen throughout the day, you will reach the Matreier Tauernhaus. Ascent 450 vm, descent 1550 vm, time-on-trail ca. 5.5 hrs. Day 6: Matrei in Osttirol - Sudetendeutsche Hütte This time, you will have to treat your legs especially well, because from Matrei i. O. and the hamlet of Glanz at an elevation of 1,445 m, the paths winds its way up to an elevation of 2,700m to the Sudetendeutsche Hütte in the heart of the Granatspitze Group. So, there are quite a few exhausting vertical meters to conquer! However, the wonderful nature and beautiful treasures will distract you from your exertion: the hamlet of Glanz enchants visitors with old East Tyrolean farmhouses, an edelweiss meadow is located at an elevation of 1,900 m, and throughout the tour, there are fascinating views of the Lasörling Group and the surrounding mountains.

3 Ascent 1250 vm, descent 100 vm, time-on-trail ca. 4 hrs. Day 7: Sudetendeutsche Hütte - Kalser Tauernhaus The Granatspitze Group in the central area of the Hohe Tauern fits into the impressive mountain panorama of this stage, and on the Glockner loop section, you will come even closer to the Großglockner. From the Sudetendeutsche Hütte, the path leads below the Gradötz glacier up to the Gradötzscharte at an elevation of 2,848 m followed by a downhill path towards the Dorfertal and the Kalser Tauernhaus. Ascent 300 vm, descent 1200 vm, time-on-trail ca. 4 hrs. Day 8: Kalser Tauernhaus - Stüdlhütte The mighty mountain landscape reaches its pinnacle here with the Zollspitze, Säulspitze, Bretterspitze, Kristallspitze, and Kreuzwandspitze They greet all hikers with their striking summits along this stage. The path however leads from the Kalser Tauernhaus over gentle terrain through a lovely valley with hill farms. There is then an uphill path heading towards the Teischnitztal, and the Herrensteig trail leads past the Figerhorn, Freiwandspitze, and Fanotkogel to the Stüdlhütte at the foot of the Großglockner. Ascent 1440 vm, descent 400 vm, time-on-trail ca. 6.5 hrs. Day 9: Stüdlhütte - Lucknerhaus After spending the night at the Stüdlhütte the closest you ll come to the Großglockner along the Eagle Walk the route now leads mainly in a southern direction. While making your way over the Pfortscharte via the Johann-Stüdl-Weg path, you can enjoy a view of the Salmhütte and even catch a glimpse of Carinthia. You will continue on the Luckner Weg path to the stately Glorer Hütte on the Berger Törl, and then head downhill through the Alpine meadow covering the valley of the Bergerbach. You will finally reach the Lucknerhaus in a sunny location. This is where the Eagle Walk ends, and the Kalser Glocknerstraße winds its way downhill. Of course, you must first rest, recharge your batteries, and enjoy the wonderful feeling of having reached your destination! Ascent 450 vm, descent 1330 vm, time-on-trail ca. 5.5 hrs. Requirements: High-altitude path requiring physical fitness and stamina; surefootedness and a head for heights are also required. Each day s stage may take up to 9 hrs.
