As a travel agency, our services to our clients are completely free. Adrian has travelled and trekked extensively from an early age. His first independent trip was to New Zealand, aged just 16, which was soon followed by a month long exploration of Europe by train. His first major expedition was a six month overland journey from London to Nairobi, crossing the Sahara into West Africa en-route to the jungles of Central Africa Republic and Zaire, before emerging into the game parks of Uganda and Kenya. He graduated from Birmingham University with a degree in Exercise Science before embarking on a four month trip through South America from Ecuador to Argentina which included remote trekking in the Peruvian Andes. Recent years have seen visits to Nepal, South Africa, Turkey, Finland, Croatia and a return visit to Morocco. Before setting up the STC in 2006, Adrian spent six years working in an independent adventure travel agency arranging holidays, charity treks and school trips to countries as diverse as Mongolia, Namibia, Peru and Laos. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and has an OCR Certificate in Off-site Safety Management. When not in the office he enjoys mountaineering, climbing, skiing and surfing, as well as introducing his two young children to the delights of foreign travel.

3 Your Travel Provider We have contacted the specialist adventure tour operator The Adventure Company, to quote on your planned trip. They are one of the largest adventure operators in the UK and are able to tailor trips to our clients needs. We have worked closely with them for many years and have had excellent feedback from past clients who have travelled with them. Tour Operator Summary The Adventure Company is an adventure holiday specialist with nearly 15 years experience. They have been independently assessed as complying with the British Standard BS8848 for overseas visits. The Adventure Company can also add the reassurance of being backed by one of the world s leading travel groups - TUI. Why is the STC recommending The Adventure Company? Experience & Suitability: The Adventure Company s experience in adventure travel spans the globe and they have been at the forefront of trekking and adventure for many years. They are used to dealing with school parties and have a dedicated selection of school itineraries. They can also adapt their general pre-set itineraries to the needs of a group, taking into account ability, age and interest. The Adventure Company is very experienced in these factors and, as well as those mentioned below, lead us to believe that The Adventure Company is the most suitable operator for this trip ATOL Financial Protection: The Adventure Company holds a full ATOL licence (No. 6352) meaning any money that is paid to them is 100% safe, even if using a low-cost airline. ATOL protection is provided in the form of a bond lodged with the Civil Aviation Authority, and is the only 100% safe form of financial protection in the UK, covering all eventualities from operator or airline failure to changes in foreign office advice. All payments for this trip would be payable directly to The Adventure Company. The STC only ever recommends our clients to book flight inclusive travel with an ATOL protected company. Safety & Back-up up: The Adventure Company are in compliance with the Learning Outside the Classroom Tours Badge, and they have been independently assessed as complying to the British Standard BS8848 for overseas visits. The company has a continuously manned emergency contact telephone number and has highly established emergency response procedures that have been developed over many years. They have a full time member of staff in control of health and safety and a thorough risk assessment for this trip would be provided if you decided to go ahead with this proposal. As part of the TUI group of companies The Adventure Company have the resources and back-up of one of the world s biggest travel companies. Local Leaders: The Adventure Company generally use local leaders, born and raised in the region. These leaders are highly trained, speak English (and of course the local languages) and will enable an insight into the local country that would not be possible with western leaders. A professional leader who is first aid trained will accompany you throughout your trip. Value for Money: By using locally run hotels and reputable in-country agents, The Adventure Company is able to offer excellent value for money. Prices for travel booked through a tour operator are undoubtedly more expensive than if you book direct with a local operator in the country you are visiting. However, you are paying for assurance of quality, safety and reliability. You get full financial protection, knowledge the ground operators are tried and tested, safety assessments and the emergency back-up of a large company, excellent guides, reliable transport and assessed accommodation.

10 Day 10: Lake Titicaca Today you take a boat to the floating reed islands of the Uros Indians and the island of Taquile. The life of the Uros is based on the totora reed, which grows in the lake and is used to construct houses and boats, thereby fostering the theory which led to Thor Heyerdahl s Pacific journey with Ra. It is said that the Uros began their floating existence by constructing the islands to isolate themselves from the belligerent Colla and Inca tribes. On reaching the islands it is clear that they are no longer as secluded as they once were, but they are still a unique sight. Continuing into the lake you arrive at Taquile Island covered in pre-inca farming terraces and small villages. Life here has not changed in centuries - men dressed in 15th century attire sit in groups continually knitting intricate hats and belts, people toil in the fields using archaic, yet effective techniques and the views out across the lake to the snow-capped mountains on the horizon are stunning. The range is characterised by high plateaux, deep canyons and spectacular mountain passes. The Cotahuasi Canyon in southern Peru is twice as deep as the Grand Canyon. Heading further east, the Andes give up their snow covered slopes to cloud forest, and ultimately, to the upper reaches of the Amazon. Peru is at its best between early June and late September. During this time the weather in the mountains is characterised by clear blue skies and sunshine and the days can be warm. However, due to the altitude the nights are cold, with temperatures frequently dropping to near freezing. 15 Health Information The information on this page has been provided by 'fitfortravel' ( - a public access website provided by the NHS (Scotland). It gives travel health information for people travelling abroad from the UK. Remember that you should always discuss your particular needs with your own doctor or nurse. Advice for All Destinations The risks to health whilst travelling will vary between individuals and many issues need to be taken into account, e.g. activities abroad, length of stay and general health of the traveller. It is recommended that you consult with your General Practitioner or Practice Nurse who will assess your particular health risks before recommending vaccines and /or antimalarial tablets. This is also a good opportunity to discuss important travel health issues including safe food and water, accidents, sun exposure and insect bites. Many of the problems experienced by travellers cannot be prevented by vaccinations and other preventive measures need to be taken. Ensure you are fully insured for medical emergencies including repatriation. The 'T7' leaflet (from Post Offices) gives details of health care agreements between countries and is accompanied by an application form for the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). The completed form must submitted about 6 weeks before you plan to leave to allow the card to reach you on time. The EHIC entitles travellers to reduced-cost, sometimes free, medical treatment in most European countries. For Travel Safety Advice you should visit the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office website ( Health Advice for Peru: Confirm primary courses and boosters are up to date as recommended for life in Britain - including vaccines given to special groups because of risk exposure or complications (e.g. hepatitis B for health care workers, influenza and pneumococcal vaccines for the elderly). Courses or boosters usually advised: tetanus; hepatitis A; typhoid; yellow fever (for those visiting areas below 2300m east of the Andes) Vaccines sometimes advised: diptheria, tuberculosis, rabies, hepatitis B, cholera No vaccine certificate required. Malaria The malaria risk is high in the north and east of the country, in some states along the Amazon river tributaries. There is variable risk in other low-lying areas below 2000m. The risk along the Pacific coast to the west of the Andes is very small except in the plains in the far north of the country. There is virtually no risk at high altitude in the Andes - this includes the Inca trail routes taken by trekkers to Cuzco, Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca.

17 Health Advice for Bolivia: Confirm primary courses and boosters are up to date as recommended for life in Britain - including vaccines given to special groups because of risk exposure or complications (e.g. hepatitis B for health care workers, tuberculosis for children at risk and healthcare workers influenza and pneumococcal vaccines for the elderly). Courses or boosters usually advised: tetanus; hepatitis A; typhoid; yellow fever Vaccines sometimes advised: diptheria, tuberculosis, rabies, hepatitis B, cholera Yellow Fever vaccine certificate is advised. Malaria Malaria prophylaxis may be necessary dependent on where you travel. The Fit for Travel website advises: Malaria risk is due predominantly to benign (P.vivax) throughout the year in all areas below 2500m. Malignant (P. falciparum) malaria exists in the departments of Santa Cruz, northern Beni and Pando, especially in the localities of Guayaramerin and Riberalta. Malaria precautions are essential. Avoid mosquito bites by covering up with clothing such as long trousers especially after sunset, using insect repellents on exposed skin and, when necessary, sleeping under a mosquito net. Check with your doctor or nurse about suitable antimalarials. Chloroquine or proguanil are usually recommended for risk areas in the west of the country. Atovaquone/proguanil OR doxycycline OR mefloquine is usually recommended for the Amazon basin (east of the Andes). If you have been travelling in a malarious area and develop a fever seek medical attention promptly. Remember malaria can develop even up to one year after exposure. If travelling to high risk malarious areas, remote from medical facilities, carrying emergency malaria standby treatment may be considered.

18 The STC: Adding value at every step What we do The Specialist Travel Consultancy is an independent travel agency. We specialise in educational adventure tours and expeditions for schools and colleges. Our role is to provide you with free, impartial advice on all aspects of arranging overseas trips, ensuring you get the best value for money and the most appropriate arrangements. We can save you, time, money and hassle. Added Value As agents, rather than a tour operator, we earn our income in the form of commission. Our service to schools and pupils is therefore free of charge. Our unique knowledge of the marketplace helps us advise on all aspects of travel planning including the choice of destination, style or travel, which tour operator is best for your particular needs, climate, visas, the itinerary itself and a range of pre-departure considerations. Personal Service We are small enough to offer a very personal service, and that is what we aim to do from initial enquiry right through to your departure. At the same time, you will also have the backing of a market leading tour operator that has had many years of experience in arranging travel itineraries in the particular country you plan to visit. Flexibility We are fully aware that every school s requirements are different when planning a trip abroad. With this in mind, we can tailormake any aspect of your planned trip to suit your needs. The wide variety of tour operators we deal with means we are perfectly suited to be able to design an itinerary appropriate to your specific requirements, year after year, whatever the destination or style of trip you have planned. Reputation and Quality It has always been our aim to build up long term relationships with the schools, colleges and charity organisations we deal with. Our reputation rests on giving you the best possible advice for your current requirements, and recognising that these may be different from previous trips we have arranged for you. We remain fiercely protective of our independence from the tour operators we deal with and will always strive to give you honest, practical advice on how best to approach your trip. Safety Safety is our highest priority when advising schools planning to take pupils abroad. We work with the most highly respected companies in adventure travel and have built up an enviable reputation for our knowledge of tour operators strengths, weaknesses and areas of specialism. The STC will only ever recommend companies that we believe can provide you with the safety, commitment, understanding and attention to detail that is so obviously needed when planning such trips. Adventurous activities and expeditions, by definition, carry more potential risks than more usual school trips, however, it is only when these risks are not effectively anticipated, assessed and managed, that problems are likely to arise. Pre-departure checks & documentation. Prior to your departure, we ensure that all necessary areas have been covered during the planning and preparation of your trip. We will provide you with a copy of our Steps for a safer journey booklet which provides useful information, tips and suggestions on how to manage your group effectively and safely whilst abroad. We can also provide help and advice with fundraising and expedition marketing. Complete Financial Security The STC is an approved agent for a wide variety of ATOL protected tour operators and travel providers. Whilst The STC will handle all aspects of your booking, we do not handle any client money. Payment for the travel services we arrange is made directly to the ATOL licence holder and you are therefore covered financially by their ATOL bond. This arrangement entirely satisfies the strict guidelines of the UK travel industry regarding consumer protection. Environmental & Ethical Issues It is our firm belief that tourism should be both sustainable and beneficial to all concerned. We are committed to only working with those companies that have environmental and ethical policies in place. In arranging your travel through us, you can be confident that you will be minimising your impact on the environment and culture of your destination, while at the same time maximizing the positive economic impact of your trip.

19 The STC: Marketing your trip We want your tour or expedition to be a success and that means getting students to sign up. We include many photos on a one or two-sided A4 sheet as well as an overview of the tour or expedition, any objectives, the day-to-day itinerary, information on the tour operator and on the services we provide here at The STC.
