PAGE 2 Introduction Located south of the Canary Islands, the Cape Verde (Cabo Verde) archipelago is a walker s paradise. With its rugged coastlines and fertile terraced volcanic slopes we have plenty of days to explore four of these beautiful islands. We start in the largest and most populated the Island of Santiago. A couple of days walking here gives us time to acclimatise and get a flavour of the Creole Portuguese-African culture with a tour of the town of Praia. A short flight takes us to the nearby island Fogo which is famous for its marvellous classic shaped volcano, We ascend the ash and scree on its slopes to the highest spot on Cape Verde at 2829m. Continuing our walking adventure on this diverse little collection of islands we fly to Sao Vicente for a days walk and tour of Mindelo for before taking a ferry to the most northerly island, Santo Antao. We spend four walking-packed days here amidst the sub-tropical jagged mountains. Santo Antao is lush, mountainous and a haven for walkers. If Pico do Fogo is not your highlight of this walking holiday then these days walking on Santo Antao will be it s fabulous. This is a magnificent and remote walking destination with stunning views of rugged coast lines all set in the middle of the turquoise blue ocean. Winter sunshine and walking you won t want to leave! Is this holiday for you? This holiday is a series of 9 full-day or half-day hikes and walks. The walks themselves are mostly on good trails with a maximum ascent/descent of up to 900m. Often we follow ancient mule tracks. The longest walk is 6 hours. The exception is the ascent of Pico do Fogo which is a steep ascent of 3-4 hours on dusty ash and scree to the highest point of just under 3000m. This day can be considered a tough walk. The walks on Santo Antao are linear for the first 3 days, so walking from your start hotel to the next night hotel. The days are fairly relaxed with 9am starts for the walking days. The nature of the terrain in Cape Verde means that some of the descents and ascents are short and steep. There are several opportunities for swimming in the warm tropical waters. There is also some time touring the islands in the vehicle to some of the finest view points and idyllic beaches. We have three internal flights included in the holiday. Evenings will be spent enjoying the cheery Creolean hospitality. The location means many evening meals involve catch of the day however there are always other options! Holiday Itinerary Day 1: Santiago Island - Meet at the group hotel in Praia. A single timed transfer from Praia Airport is provided. A single timed transfer is provided for the drive from Praia Airport to our hotel. On this island of Santiago we have sandy beaches, mighty mountains and very dry grassland areas. About half the population of Cape Verde live on the island and there are small terraces for local produce. The islands highest peak is Pico Antonia (not to be confused with the one on Sao Antao!). It has a large influence from Africa as it was a slavery hub for many years. There is also a strong colonial influence which can be seen in the architecture. Depending on arrival time we will have a short city tour of Praia, which will include the city centre, known as the Plateau and the Sukupira market area. And we experience the warm welcome from the beautiful people of Cape Verde. Return to our hotel and have dinner. HOTEL MEALS D Day 2: Santiago Island - Walking in the Pico da Antonia Natural Park.

PAGE 3 We leave Praia this morning after breakfast and transfer for just over 30 mins to the small hamlet of Santa Ana just outside the Pico da Antonia Natural Park. From here we walk through the park and up to the village of Rui Vaz. We pass through agricultural land including banana and sugarcane plantations. Along the way we may see monkeys and the grey-headed kingfisher. We have splendid views of Pico da Antonia, the highest mountain on the island at 1394m. We follow small paths which ascend and descend to our destination. On the whole the route is upwards towards Rui Vaz. We arrive at our accommodation in the mountains. This simple hotel is in a splendid location with fine vistas over Pico da Antonia and the surrounding countryside and on clear days over across the seas to the island of Maio. Overnight in a hotel in Rui Vaz. HOTEL ASCENT 900M MEALS BD DESCENT 850M TIME 5 HRS Day 3: Santiago Island - Walking in Serra Malagueta National Park. This morning we depart this section of the mountains and transfer (approx. 1hr) to the Serra Malagueta National Park which in the middle of the northern section of this island. Walking in this national park we will meet goats and their shepherds as well as donkeys helping out with the daily chores with the local farmers and communities. We have sweeping views to the end of the island. We enjoy a picnic lunch today as well. Our walk ends as the Ribeira das Pratas, where there is a black sandy beach were we can enjoy a little swim to cool off and relax. When we are ready we transfer back to Praia. Another sunset and some live music at a local restaurant concludes this day. Overnight Praia. HOTEL ASCENT 230M MEALS BL DESCENT 770M TIME 3-4 HRS Day 4: Fogo Island - the Island of Fire. An early start today as we take the short flight from Praia to the nearby island of Fogo. Fogo is in fact the Portuguese word for fire - and the active volcano 'Pico de Fogo' is the reason. The most recent eruptions were in 2014 and early 2015 with lava destroying almost all the houses in the villages of Portela and Bangeira. However the resilient locals moved back as soon as the lava was cool to the touch and started to re-build. We drive up to these villages not far from the crater rim, also named Cha das Caldeiras. We enjoy an afternoon walk here and our local guide tells us about the volcano and living in the area. Unlike the rest of the Cape Verde population the locals who live in the Caldeira are blonde haired and have light coloured skin - apparently due to the Count of Montrond who settled on the island in 1870 whilst on his way to Brazil! GUESTHOUSE ASCENT 280M MEALS BLD DESCENT 280M TIME 3 HRS Day 5: Fogo Island - Ascent of Pico do Fogo (2829m). Cape Verde's highest point. An exciting day today as we ascend this volcano with its characteristic conical shape. And the sides are covered in old lava and ash - making the walking tough as we ascent steeply on the scree and rocks. We pass small fumeroles giving off hot sulphur gases and deep ash fields. We arrive at the crater rim and can actually peep into the crater. The views are more than awe inspiring. And from here you can see that the current volcano is inside an enormous

PAGE 4 original crater. It's around 4 hours ascent and then the descent is very quick with most people choosing to run or slide down the ash back to the village. We enjoy our late lunch accompanied by a glass of Fogo wine made from the few vines that they have dotted on the ashy ground. We have the rest of the afternoon to relax in this special place and soak in the atmosphere. GUESTHOUSE ASCENT 1200M MEALS BLD DESCENT 1200M TIME 4-5 HRS Day 6: Fogo Island - Walk in the forest of Monte Velha, swim in the sea and transfer to Sao Filipe. A long, but worthwhile descend from the Caldeira to the Atlantic. The small and quiet village Pai Antonio is located on Fogo s north shore near Mosteiros and is the destination of this diversified panorama tour. At the beginning you will cross the volcanic landscape of the Caldeira and small eucalyptus woods to reach Monte Velha. After a little while the descent criss-crosses a diverse cultivated landscape, which is amazingly green and fertile due to the steady trade winds. We have a picnic lunch that we can enjoy en route. At Pia Antonio we meet our transfer vehicle. Time and weather allowing we can have a swim in the natural swimming pools on the way back to Sao Filipe. This colourful town is great for a stroll around before dinner. HOTEL MEALS BL DESCENT 1300M TIME 4-5 HRS Day 7: Walk on the black beach of Sao Filipe, fly to Sao Pedro, Sao Vicente Island. This morning we have a relaxed start after our series of early mornings! After breakfast we walk along the stunning black beach for 1-2hrs. It can be a peaceful or wild place between the crashing waves and the rugged cliffs depending on the weather and seas. Back in Sao Filipe we enjoy a walking tour of the town before enjoying some lunch at a local restaurant. We have some free time before our flight to the island of Sao Vicente (via Santiago). This small island is located south-east of its more well-known neighbour Santo Antao. We transfer the 20 minutes to the town of Mindelo to our hotel. Overnight in Mindelo. HOTEL MEALS BL Day 8: Santo Antao Island - Short ferry ride, afternoon walk at Ribeira de Cha das Pedras. This morning we have a ferry crossing (1 hour) to Santo Antao, the greenest of the Cape Verde islands and a perfect venue for walking. We transfer to the northern part of the island along the old road to the crater at Cova. Here we walk to the summit (around 1 hr) along a well-kept, spectacular, old mule path. The views from the top are great for such a short walk! We then continue in the vehicle to the trail head at Ribeira de Cha das Pedras. Ribeira means river or rivers-edge in Portuguese. Here we leave the transport and walk to Caibros. The area is known for growing tropical fruits and vegetables and we may see people at work in their fields. We arrive in the small village and check into our accommodation for the night. It might be possible to taste some of the Cape Verdean rum here (known as grogue). The 3 generations of family who run the accommodation also own the corner shop and a small traditional grogue distillery! Overnight Caibros. 5 PAGE 5 Day 9: Santo Antao Island - Walk to Cha de Igreja near the coast. After breakfast we leave the village of Caibros and start our walk towards the coast. We pass some spectacular mountain scenery today as we walk. The mountains are not high but they are steep and rugged. We zigzag around the contours on well-made old mule paths passing some hamlets as we walk. We enjoy our picnic lunch on a high point with views before continuing onto Cha de Igreja, one of the loveliest villages on the island! We should arrive here in the mid-afternoon. We then have some time to relax before watching the sunset and having dinner. Overnight Cha de Igreja. GUESTHOUSE ASCENT 600M MEALS BLD DESCENT 900M TIME 4-5 HRS Day 10: Santo Antao Island - Coastal walk to Ponta do Sol. Leaving the accommodation at around 9am we follow the coastline to the village of Ponta do Sol. The views can be described as breath-taking today with the vast expanse of the ocean on our left and the steep mountains on the island inland. Today is our longest walk, but you won't want it to end because of the beauty. We undulate along the coast to Ponta do Sol, an attractive fishing village with a mountain backdrop. Again we should arrive in the mid afternoon and this evening we can get into the island swing listening to live music while we dine. Overnight Ponta do Sol. GUESTHOUSE ASCENT 900M MEALS BL DESCENT 850M TIME 5 HRS Day 11: Santo Antao Island - Walking in the Val de Paul. The Val de Paul is beautiful and green, peppered with plantations of sugar cane, mango, papaya, breadfruit and eucalyptus trees. There are also cedar and pine trees in proliferation. The chain of mountains that run through the island have towering peaks, and stunning views of the Atlantic coast. We walk today through this area with the crisp mountain air and past tiny communities. We start with a short transfer and walk to Cabo de Ribeira via Pico d'antonio. We follow the cobbled paths lined with dry-stone walls and the precarious villages nestled on steep sided mountains. After a 4 hour walk we stop for lunch in a mountain village. Here we will learn how the people roast their coffee. Our transport will meet us here and we transfer down to Porto Novo where we catch the ferry back to Mindelo on the island of Sao Vicente. We check in to our hotel and have dinner in town. Overnight Mindelo. HOTEL ASCENT 700M MEALS BLD DESCENT 300M TIME 4-5 HRS Day 12: Sao Vicente Island - Departure. 7 PAGE 7 Accommodation Tourism is still in its infancy on many of the islands that we visit on Cape Verde. This means that some of the accommodation is very simple, and sometimes feels more like staying at someone's house than a hotel or guesthouse. Of course this adds to the charm of the destination and the locations used means that we can really get out and take advantage of the walking in this spectacular scenery. On Santiago Island we have 2 nights in a simple hotel in Praia. All rooms are en-suite. It is located near the sea in the Palmarejo area of the town. We also have a night in a simple mountain hotel in the Rui Vaz region. It is stunningly situated on a ridge with splendid views when the weather permits. Our 2 nights in the Calderia on Fogo Island are in a simple Casa belonging to Cicilio. The rooms have a shared bathroom, due to the rural location of this hamlet and water shortages there is not always hot water here. The 1 night at the simple hotel in the capital of Fogo, Sao Filipe, is a small establishment well located near the town centre. The rooms are en-suite. They have a veranda with great sunset views. Our hotel in Mindelo, on Sao Vicente Island, which we stay in for 3 nights, is a again simple establishment. All rooms are en-suite. When walking on the island of Sao Antao we stay in 3 simple guesthouse / pension accommodations. These are small family run local places and will give us a great feel for the country and the people. They are simple but clean and well run friendly establishments. In Caibros and Cha d Igreja not all rooms have en-suite facilities. In Porto do Sol all rooms do have en-suite facilities. If you are travelling by yourself, you will be paired up with another single client of the same sex. Some single rooms are available for a supplementary cost and are dependent on availability. If you are planning on extending your holiday additional nights at the group hotels are available on request. Group Leader & Support Staff The group will be accompanied by a professional and qualified local tour leader. On certain days you will also be accompanied by an additional local guide (for example on the ascent of Fogo). Altitude This holiday involves going to moderately high altitude. During the course of your trip you will reach altitudes in excess of 2500 metres. Most people will have no difficulty with this level of altitude but before coming on the holiday, we recommend you read the advice on trekking at high altitude. You can also talk to one of our trekking experts if you have any concerns about altitude. Spending Money Approximately 200 per person (or equivalent in US dollars or Euros) should be allowed for tips, soft drinks, snacks, non-included meals and miscellaneous expenses. Alcoholic drinks, souvenirs and optional activities are additional so you may wish to budget for these. You can choose to take your money in pounds sterling, dollars or euros. However if you have a choice then euros are the favoured currency in Cape Verde and are even sometimes (at the larger places) accepted for payment. There will be the opportunity to change money into local currency on arrival at the airport and your local leader will advise the best places to change. It is not possible to buy local currency prior to travel. Additionally, you will be able to get currency from bank ATMs in the towns that we will visit. Credit cards are useful and it is a good idea to carry one in case of emergency.

PAGE 8 Guidance On Tipping Tipping is the accepted way of saying thank you to your leader, drivers and local team. Tipping is entirely voluntary and should be dependent on good service. It is usual at the beginning of this trip that the local guide will request money of the tips for the local guides and drivers, for the whole trip and then the main guide will distribute these for the group. This is about per person. And then we suggest per person for the main guide, depending on group size. We recommend that you decide levels of tipping and give any tips as a group rather than from individual group members. Free KE Gift We give you a free gift as a way to thank all our clients who book a KE holiday. Choose from KE T-shirts, buffs, KE trek bags* (where applicable) plus many more. Alternatively you can choose to make a 10 donation to the Juniper Trust Charity. You can make your selection in your My KE account after booking. * A free KE trek bag is available on this holiday. Delivery outside of the UK will be charged. Baggage Allowance For this holiday you should take one piece of luggage and a daypack. Luggage with wheels is useful for this holiday. On the internal flights there is a weight limit of 20kg. For international flights please check your baggage allowance with your airline. Group Size & Holiday Status For each holiday there is a minimum number of participants required to enable it to go ahead. Once the minimum number is reached, the trip status will change from 'Available' to 'Guaranteed to run'. You can check the trip status for each departure in Dates and Prices table. Other than in exceptional circumstances, we will not cancel a trip once it has achieved this guaranteed to run status and so you are free to proceed with your international flight booking and other travel arrangements. General Information Passport & Visas A passport with 6 months remaining validity at the end of your stay is generally required for visits to countries outside the EU. The information that we provide is for UK passport holders. Please check the relevant embassy or consulate for other nationalities. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct travel documents and visas for your holiday. Visa requirements and charges are subject to change without notice. If you are travelling outside the EU you should have at least 2 blank pages in your passport for each country that you visit. Visa Cape Verde All nationalities require a visa for Cape Verde. The visa is 25. We will make all the arrangements for your visa which you will collect on arrival. You must submit your passport details to us 4 weeks prior to departure. Health & Vaccinations You should contact your doctor or travel clinic to check whether you require any specific vaccinations or other preventive measures. You should be up to date with routine courses and boosters as recommended in the UK e.g.

PAGE 9 diphtheria-tetanus-polio and measles-mumps-rubella, along with hepatitis A and typhoid. A good online resource is Travel Health Pro. Zika virus has been confirmed as active in this country. It is a tropical viral disease spread by daytime biting mosquitoes, like dengue and malaria. There is currently no vaccine or prophylaxis available and therefore the best form of prevention is to avoid being bitten. We recommend you take the usual precautions to avoid mosquito bites. The mosquitoes that transmit ZIKV are unlikely to be found above 2,000m altitude. For more information, visit the website of the National Travel Network and Centre (NaTHNaC) at Dengue fever is a known risk in places visited. It is a tropical viral disease spread by daytime biting mosquitoes, like malaria. There is currently no vaccine or prophylaxis available and therefore the best form of prevention is to avoid being bitten. We recommend you take precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Currency The unit of currency in Cape Verde is the Cape Verdean Escudo. Electricity Supply & Plug We recommend you check if you require an adaptor for your electrical items at: Preparing For Your Holiday Getting some additional exercise before coming on an active holiday makes a lot of sense. The fitter you are, after all, the more enjoyable you will find the experience. You should be aerobically fit and comfortable with walking 3 to 6 hours for consecutive days. Hill walking, with a good amount of ascent and descent, is the best training. Running, cycling and swimming are also good for developing cardio vascular fitness and stamina. Travel Aware As a reputable tour operator, KE supports the British Foreign & Commonwealth Offices' Travel Aware campaign to enable British citizens to prepare for their journeys overseas. The 'Travel Aware' website provides a single, authoritative source of advice for all kinds of travellers and we recommend that prior to travel, all KE clients visit the official UK Government website at travelaware.campaign.gov.uk and read the FCO Travel Advice for their chosen destination.
