Freedom with Respect The awareness campaign for sustainable mountaineering in South Tyrol Franziska Zemmer Department of Nature and Environment, Alpenverein Südtirol
Human mountain interactions in winter In one season k tours and 14-20k people (Estimate for South Tyrol from the BRD Mountain Rescue Service, 2011) 2
Wildlife in winter Stay in suitable winter habitats Develop winter coat, fatty layer, mimicry Reduce energy turnover, body temperature and heart beat (e.g. deer) ENERGY SAVING MODE 3
Our leisure space is their habitat 4
What we need is respect: Freedom with Respect We address mountain users. Want them to practice sports in line with the requirements of nature and wildlife. We explain why and what they can do to reduce impact on nature and wildlife. 5
Communication Personal information to our members during courses Trained functionaries as multiplicators at local level Information folders Information tables on site Radio, TV interviews, round tables Print media (newspapers, magazine Berge erleben) Workshops 6
Printed material 7
What can we do? 3 Tips From our folder: The funnel principle 1. Avoid rocky, snow free areas; ride free in open space above the timber line 2.Take the shortest way possible through the timber line, keep your radius short 3.In the forest stay on routes and paths 8
Channelling Map ski routes Map winter habitats Identify conflict zones Select location for information tables Cut trail Winter habitat Conflict zone: Solution = cut out marked route and channel users Winter habitat 9
Examples Skitour Portlesspitze, Matsch Skitour Lorenzispitze, Latzfons 10
Information table parking area Garn, Feldthurns 11
Information table parking area Plätzwiese, Prags 12
Signs on the route 13
Human nature interactions in summer 14
The table in the Climbing Area Ciastlins, St. Vigil Enneberg NP Fanes-Sennes-Prags Climbing idols as multiplicators for main target group (climbers) Project partner Office for Nature Parks of the Autonomous Province Bolzano, South Tyrol 15
Summary Human impact on wildlife in winter may compromise the animals ability to survive Rock breeders may discontinue breeding upon disruption Freedom with respect is entirely based on the free will of mountain-lovers to adapt outdoor sports to the needs of wildlife The AVS addresses members through own channels, reaches broader public through the media and partner networks Channels actively on site Freiheit mit Rücksicht of the AVS is the Italian initiative following the Austro-Swiss campaign Respektiere deine Grenzen and Natürlich auf Tour of the German Alpine Association (DAV) 16
Outlook Generate the greatest possible impact and public acceptance for sustainable mountaineering Strengthen current partnerships (public administration, other NGOs, local stakeholders) Explore new partnerships Continue campaigning 17
Acknowledgment This project was conceived and developed by Klaus Bliem, Mag. biol. Judith Egger and Dipl. Ing. Lothar Gerstgrasser Thank you! 18
