2 Summary of Activities Jamaica sits on the Regional Climate Change Public Education Committee-Mainstreaming Adaptation to Climate Change (MACC) Project Series of Public fora have been convened: August 2004-March 2005 The Media has played an active part, the educational community and political directorate have shown great interest. The UNDP/GEF funded JCCEA Project currently supports an ongoing PEO campaign and a climate change baseline survey
3 The JCCEA Project: Launch The project is funded to the sum of US$100, by the UNDP/GEF The duration is 1 Year: July 2004 to March Is it being executed my the Met. Service which is the focal agency for Climate change in Jamaica Phase 3 of the Project is Public Education, which supports inter alia: public fora and a climate change survey.

5 Focus of Climate Change Survey: March to June 2005 Jamaica has a resident population of 2.6 million. The Survey will be conducted in all 14 parishes targeting 2100 persons Survey has been developed by the MACC project with considerable inputs from NOAA and Univ. of Luiville It targets KAP (Knowledge, Attitude and Practice or behaviour) Aims to fill KAP gaps. Survey analyses and report will serve as input for National PEO Strategy and 2 nd Nat l Communication.
6 Subjects of the Climate Change Survey The Media including GIS organisations Voluntary Groups (NGOs, Rotary, Lion s) Communities-at-Risk International Funding Agencies and Environment NGOs Regional Bodies, Collaborators General public Householders
7 Other past PEO Activities: Media Involvement (as partners): Television documentary for Schools on Climate Change-CVM Communications group, Man Talk Programme on Global Warming and Ozone Depletion (DVD made from presentation), TV & Radio interviews on WMD 2005, Tsunami impacts, and Kyoto Day New promotional items: TV/VCR, pamphlets, rulers, exercise books, documentary on Met. Service and posters on climate change,. Partnership with other agencies: Bauxite companies, Climate Studies Group, UWI, Mona- Research on El Niño and how it impacts Jamaica s Rainfall -Commencing April 2005).
8 Met. Service & MLE Climate Change Symposium: Feb , 2005 The Session 1: Wednesday, February 16, 2005, at the Hilton Hotel. The date of this session coincided most appropriately, with the day that the Kyoto Protocol entered into force. Attendance: Over 200 including two ministers of government: Hon. Dr. Paul Robertson, Minister of Development (who represented the Prime Minister in his absence), and Hon. Dean Peart, Minister of Lands & the Environment (MLE). There was a very large student turn out. Session II-Thurs. Feb. 17: The Wexford Court Hotel in Western Jamaica in the second city, Montego Bay. In attendance: Hon. Dean Peart, MLE, PS, MLE and over 70 of the 90 expected invitees. Interaction was lively. Both Sessions were Chaired by the Permanent Secretary, MLE and were addressed by Tony Deyal, MACC representative

10 Planned PEO Activities for Documentary of WMD, March 23, 2005 (attended by over 300 persons) and Climate Change symposium (Feb ) is being produced and will be distributed to different publics. 2. Pre-Hurricane Briefing-Jamaica (May 31, & June ): To target audience of over 1000 persons. Targeted Agencies: CCCCC, NOAA/Univ. of Col., MACC, CMC, etc. Intended Special Guest: Rt. Hon. Dr. Keith Mitchell, Prime Minster of Grenada. 3. Cabinet Briefing: Planned by MACC/CCCC for Public Viewing of Installation of Met. Station on Blue Mountain-Highest point in Jamaica:7402 ft. Tech. Assistance from MACT TEC Inc., USA
